About the Owner

We moved out to the Chamonix Valley in 2001 because we love the beautiful mountainous setting and the wonderful outdoor adventure playground which it provides. We also love living and working here - meeting our guests personally at the Alpine Retreat and ensuring that they have a memorable holiday. Rob also runs a photographic business and I offer personal fitness training and sports massage therapy. In-between these activities, we enjoy all the Winter sports in season, paragliding in Summer, and running throughout the year. We know we are very lucky to be able to live here and are always keen to share it with you!

Great Apartment, 8th great holiday here!!

  • 5 of 5

So, this was my 8th skiing holiday at the Alpine Retreat, staying in apartment Joy. I love this place!! The Chamonix Valley is so accessible from Geneva airport and Les Houches, where the Alpine Retreat is based, is the first drop off village for the airport buses. The Alpine Retreat is a traditional farmhouse built in the 18th century, but now has all the mods cons you'd expect, with stunning views from Apartment Joy of the Mont Blanc range. The apartment is warm, cosy, clean and conveniently sits between the two ski lifts serving the village. Within a short walking distance from the apartment there's a supermarket, bank, ski hire facility and places to eat and drink. As the Chamonix Valley is a year round tourist place there's loads to do for everyone. I've also spent time at the Alpine Retreat in the summer and it's just glorious. Being a keen walker in the UK it was nice to experience higher hills/mountains and the paths in these mountains were well maintained and well signposted. Rob and Suzanne, who own the Alpine Retreat, are never far away to ask for advice on where to go and what to do in the area. It's a tribute to them and the holiday environment that they create for people, that when you receive the visitors book at the end of your holiday and have a look at the previous comments that so many people are not writing in it for the first time, or second time, or third time..........Next time for me will be my ninth time, can't wait!!

Joyful Wee Place

  • 5 of 5

For the past two years, Apartment Joy has been the home of great ski holidays for our wee family. We've been in January and March and had great conditions with the apartment an ideal, homely bonus to the skiing experience.

It's brilliantly situated between the cable car and the gondola in Les Houches - a short five minute walk from each - and with the runs descending at the back of the apartment, it's possible to ski home to within a minute of the front door. When the legs get tired (usually Wednesday afternoon) it's a five minute walk to the bus stop into Chamonix. It has it's own ground for the kids to mess about on, build snowmen, sledge and goof around.

The apartment itself has everything a family requires for basic self-catering and the charming separate double bedroom gives the grown-ups privacy in the evenings. The interior is very homely with free wi-fi and TV for lazy evenings. My son enjoys the luxury of the bunk bed. Unlike many Chamonix apartments, the bunk is not crammed into the hall outside the toilet. The hallway is for storing gear and there's plenty of room.

I'd recommend Apartment Joy for any one or two kid families. The skiing at Les Houches isn't the most challenging in the world but when you've got young kids, it's about giving them an amazing experience. Having a great day on the slopes and being able to return to such a charming little place makes for perfect holidays.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Rikki, for your honest review- it's always good to see guests enjoying themselves both on and off the slopes, and you and your family certainly did just that! We are glad that you have discovered the secret of January skiing and that Apt Joy served you so well as a home from home for your adventures. We look forward to meeting you all again - you are certainly most welcome! Suzanne and Rob

Skiing in the sun

  • 5 of 5

We (Two Couples) are just back from a fantastic week of skiing and already talking about booking again for next year but considering staying in the farmhouse next time with a bigger party.

We stayed in Apartment Joy this year at Alpine Retreat which was described as ideal location between the two cable cars up the mountain only a matter of minutes walk away and perfectly located to local restaurants and pubs. This couldn’t be described any better we latterly had to walk 100 meters in either direction and we were at the cable cars and surrounded by local restaurants and pubs.

The accommodation was clean, well maintained with perfect facilities and a warm welcome at the door. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to a friend or family member, in fact we are hoping that a our extended family will be joining us next year and we will be trying to book Alpine Retreat again.

Alpine Retreat Repeat!

  • 5 of 5

I’ve not longed returned from yet another lovely skiing holiday at the Alpine Retreat. I’ve always stayed in Apartment Joy, and you couldn’t ask for cosier accommodation.

On arrival to Alpine Retreat Rob and Suzanne are there to give you a warm welcome, to find out what you may need to do/see over your stay and to impart their extensive knowledge of living in the valley to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

The village of Les Houches, where Alpine Retreat is, has everything you need to spend your time there. With the choice of two lifts up to the slopes just a short walk away and a free bus to the other end of the valley (to Chamonix/Argentiere/Le Tour) it’s perfectly situated.

Once you’ve arrived, within an hour or so you’ve picked up your skiis, picked up your ski pass and picked up your shopping and unpacked! An easy way to start the holiday! The valley, besides skiing/snowboarding, has lots of other activities to do. If the weather isn’t good for the slopes, then you can swim, ice skate, go on a huskie trip, snow shoe or take a train trip to the other end of the valley for example. This makes the area very good for family/friends holidays with different ages and abilities. From snowboard madness to leisurely walks around Chamonix, there’s something there to keep everyone happy and to enjoy their winter holiday.

I booked my first ski holiday at the Alpine Retreat in 2009, and I’ve just had my sixth holiday there! Rob and Suzanne have a particularly high rate of repeat business..............there’s only one way to find out why! :o)

Owner's Response: Thank you very much, Nicola, for putting so much thought into your review ... it is so comprehensive that our future guests won't need any introduction to the Alpine Retreat or Les Houches/Chamonix! We were delighted to see you again and to catch up on your news ..... thank you for choosing to return - we enjoyed your visit as much as you did! Hope to see you next year too....

Cosy Alpine accommodation

  • 5 of 5

A lovely apartment, within easy reach of the lift to the slopes (less than 5 min walk) Make use of the lockers at the base of the Parion lift to store the ski equipment after your day on the slopes.

Its close to the shops for bread, milk, and pastries, the supermarket is roughly max 10 min walk - remember to take some bags for packing the food. You can catch the bus back, but with extra pairs of hands its ok to walk back.

Kids happy, 14, and 12, all tired after a good day on the slopes. The pizzeria in the village is great for a meal out and only 3 min walk - opposite the milk and bread shop. The use of the DVD in the evening was a good way to wind down, and catch up on Christmas DVD presents.

Suzanne and Rob welcomed us and answered any questions we had and helped recommending the ski hire company, which we did online prior to arriving. Booking was well organised and the use of the recommended transfer company made this part of the journey easy.Skiing for Beginners is excellent, with a lovely family feel to the resort.

Stunning scenery, could not get enough of the lovely surroundings.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jackie, for such an accurate and detailed review! We too were delighted that you all enjoyed your holiday so much and had explored so much of the local area. This review will really help explain the Alpine Retreat to future guests and we feel has hit the nail on the head! Thanks again, and yes, with our great pleasure, see you next year :-) Suzanne and Rob

From the Owner

This area is justifiably world-renowned as a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts as well as a haven for those wanting to relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life. We have proved to ourselves that this really is true! The easy access by motorway, (almost empty by UK standards!) and the availability of cable cars in Spring, Summer and Winter enable even the youngest and our more mature visitors to appreciate the high mountains at their very best. The skiing is right on the doorstep and the Summer activities range from canyoning/white water rafting through to biking, hiking, climbing and even flying! So there is truly something for everyone...

Local lakes provide ample opportunities for swimming in the summer. Several of the lakes have artificial beaches (sand covered areas) along part of their length.

Most of our guests either fly to Geneva airport (Easyjet) which is less than an hour's drive from the Alpine Retreat or drive from the UK (8 hours from the French ferry ports). Other airports include: Lyon (2 hours), and Turin (1 3/4 hours) drive. We can arrange transfers from Geneva airport if required.

We are ideally located in the village of Les Houches, Chamonix, and are only a 3-minute walk from shops, restaurants and bars.

The Alpine capital of Chamonix is just 5km away. We can arrange free tickets for the regular local buses and trains up and down the valley. For a taste of Italy, why not use the Mont Blanc tunnel; in less than half an hour you can be enjoying a pizza in the Italian town of Courmeyeur or hiking in the beautiful Val Ferret, or relaxing in the Roman Spa at Pre St Didier.

Further Details:

In the Chamonix valley, the whole concept of easy access to the mountains is born out in reality with trains, tramways and a host of superbly efficient cable cars which whisk you up to the hundreds of well-marked walking/biking trails. It is also easy to visit one of the many glaciers or to get a taste of river-rafting, canyoning or even paragliding, or perhaps to visit one of the many animal parks. Additionally, several activity centres offer everything from tennis to swimming and ice-skating to golf. Both Les Houches and Chamonix have a wide range of restaurants and bars which offer cuisine and entertainment to cater for every taste and budget.

The Alpine Retreat is ideally located between the 2 ski lifts of Les Houches Ski resort, Chamonix. We are just 5 mins walk from both stations and you can ski right back to the garden. The snow canons enable skiing from mid-Dec to Mid-Apr; the North facing slopes are perfect for good quality snow throughout the season. The excellent mix of runs favour mixed ability groups, with the famous World Cup run passing by the Retreat for the more adventurous! There are bars and restaurants about 5 mins walk down the road and the village centre is about 10 mins walk or a free bus ride away. The huge garden is ideal for sledging and snowmen in Winter, and after the snows, the uninterrupted views of the majestic Mont Blanc range are unsurpassed in the valley. Sitting and relaxing has never been so good!

  • Notes on accommodation: The farmhouse and apartments of the Alpine Retreat are decorated to a very high standard throughout. Despite having bed spaces for up to 10, the main farmhouse/chalet is often chosen by smaller groups who would like to enjoy the comfort and space provided by this unit. Also, it is possible to book both the farmhouse chalet and the apartment, and use the smaller apartment as a private 'en-suite' bedroom with the group all eating together in the larger farmhouse chalet. All the accommodation is suitable for families and the competitive price offers good value for money for smaller groups as well. Heating and all linen is provided. Outside: The Alpine Retreat has a large, enclosed, private garden that is safe for all to enjoy. Winter guests can have fun sledging down the gentle slope of the upper lawn, whilst summer guests will love the bottom lawns and discreet patio areas to relax and read a book in peace and quiet. Tables and chairs allow all our visitors to enjoy the most spectacular views of the Mont Blanc mountain range without having to leave the comfort of their garden chairs. You can take breakfast in the garden or enjoy a BBQ in the evening. A gazebo makes it possible to enjoy the shade when it is too hot.
