About the Owner

We moved out to the Chamonix Valley in 2001 because we love the beautiful mountainous setting and the wonderful outdoor adventure playground which it provides. We also love living and working here - meeting our guests personally at the Alpine Retreat and ensuring that they have a memorable holiday. Rob also runs a photographic business and I offer personal fitness training and sports massage therapy. In-between these activities, we enjoy all the Winter sports in season, paragliding in Summer, and running throughout the year. We know we are very lucky to be able to live here and are always keen to share it with you!

Absolutely perfect for our Winter holiday - everything was made easy by Suzanne and Rob.

Who could ask for a better location for a summer holiday - we spent 2 weeks at The Alpine Retreat and left wanting more and more! Plenty to do every day and yet peaceful and relaxing in the evenings ...we'll be back.

This recommendation from our friends was superb - The Alpine Retreat, our hosts, the excellent accommodation and undeniably fabulous views made for a wonderful experience which we will remember until we return with our extended family next year ... thank you!

Fantastic stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week staying in the lovely farmhouse. Excellent location, stunning views, well equipped house and beautiful garden all combined to make our stay to celebrate my 40th birthday as perfect as i could have hoped for. Les Houches is a great location away from the bustle of Chamonix but only a short free bus ride away when we wanted to visit. Hardly needed to use the car as free public transport in the valley was so good.

Frankie and Jerry were very welcoming and were so helpful with local knowledge.

We enjoyed trips out to Aguil du Midi, Mer de Glace, Brevent and Flegere cable cars, Mountain tramway, Annecy and generally exploring Chamonix and the whole valley. Being there to see the finish of UTMB was an added bonus.

Best bits. ...too many to mention. Worst bit...leaving to come home.

Thank you for a very special stay. We definitely want to come back.

Wonderful stay in Les Houches

  • 4 of 5

Wanted to see the mountains in summer for the first time. Heard a lot of Chamonix so went there for hiking. We were chosing where to stay based on location and price. Alpine Retreat is just few steps from several nice trails, lifts are around the corner in case you need them. Enough of activities for family with three kids for at least couple of days, no need to use a car or public transport.

Easy to get to any location in the valley from Alpine Retreat. Several grocery shops are in vicinity though for serious shopping we went with the car. Closest bakery is few hundred meters away (bread is good but croissants are not the best in the valley).

The house is clean (most important for us) and really convenient for whatever duration stay. Kitchen is good with enough of equipment though rather old but in good condition (dishwasher is terribly loud but you do not hear that upstairs). They even have washing machine (big bonus for us).

Sleeping rooms are upstairs. Did not use one of four rooms at all. Everyone slept conveniently. Double bed could be a bit longer though. Would not chose to stay with another family or friends, would not be enough of privacy in that case, one family fits perfectly.

Three bathrooms is a good thing for a big family obviously. Although using of two showers at the same time dd not work well, not enough pressure for hot water,

Hosts were very nice and welcoming. Could advise on where to go and what to see. We were too engaged in our planned activities so did not have enough time to chat with them bit more which could be nice as we felt.

Completely enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you, A B, for your nice review - we were delighted that your active family had such a great time exploring the mountains from the Alpine Retreat. We will take a look at the water pressure situation in the showers - we didn't know that the pressure needed boosting, so thanks for letting us know! Sorry you found the beds a little short - whilst they are the full length - you are even taller than Rob (lucky for you!) and so we are not at all surprised!! You would be very welcome to return and we hope that you do. Good luck with your family fun and thank you again, Suzanne and Rob

Had a fabulous week staying at The Alpine Retreat. The house is so spacious, clean and comfortable and its position in the village is perfect. It's such a relaxing home from home after a day on the slopes. We were a family/friends group of 8 and really appreciated all the space, no tripping over eachother here!

Suzanne and Rob made the booking process so easy. Communication was prompt and any query dealt with immediately. Chrystine and Richard in resort couldn't have been more helpful, but also very discreet. Thank you all so much.

We would love to return and have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful property!

Magnificent week in Les houches.

  • 4 of 5

A fabulous week at the farmhouse once again. Great hosts in Rod and Suzanne. I think this must be our fifth or sixth time at the Alpine retreat and it never disappoints. If anyone is wanting a great self catered location with access to fantastic skiing this has to be the place to stay. Roll on next time.

Stunning Home from Home

  • 5 of 5

Just a quick email to let you know how we got on!!

Firstly, the farmhouse is stunning and cosy and totally suited our family! We all felt at home straight away and settled in very quickly, Richard and Steph offered some very useful information for us (Richard likes to talk and offer his wealth of knowledge!) but this came in very useful in lots of ways so we are very grateful.

We managed to get through the week with only one slightly twisted knee (mine) but apart from that we all learnt to ski and Elliott our son took to it really well (kids tend to find it easy eh?!!)

Les Houches itself was also to our taste as it has everything you could ever want but also has a quaint village feel to it too, completely loved it!!!! We didn't have one bad meal out, all the food was brilliant and we even met Carol Madge (spotlight presenter) in the bar run by the Irish people just down the road (Kitsch Bar??) I can't remember the spelling!!

We had a fantastic time, we loved looking at all your amazing photos that you have up around the house, you have alot of memories there which also made us feel at home!!

We would recommend staying here to anyone and can't wait to spread the word about this area and this lovely farmhouse!!

Owner's Response: Thank you M, for your descriptive and accurate review for The Alpine Retreat! We're delighted that you all had a super family holiday together, and that Richard and Steph looked after you so well in our absence. Hope your knee untwists soon, and that you'll be up for some more skiing next winter - you'd all be very welcome! We, too, think that Les Houches is a lovely Savoyarde village - great eateries and drinkeries, friendly and all mod cons - you chose well :-) Thank you again and hope to see you next year! Suzanne and Rob

Family reunion

  • 4 of 5

Alpine retreat was the perfect place to hold a family reunion with 11 of us coming from various corners of the globe. The location could not have been more central suiting the grandchildren with only a 5 min walk to the ski lifts. Whilst the kids where all out skiing this gave us (the grand parents) the perfect opportunity to enjoy the fabulous view of the mountains from our flat (which was attached to the main house).

The kitchen was a great place for us all to come together and share our stories of the day around the farmhouse kitchen table where we were kept warm by the newly installed log burner.

It was lovely to meet Rob and Susanne who where there to greet us upon our arrival and give us all the relevant information regarding ski lifts, passes, restaurants etc..

From the Owner

This area is justifiably world-renowned as a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts as well as a haven for those wanting to relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life. We have proved to ourselves that this really is true! The easy access by motorway, (almost empty by UK standards!) and the availability of cable cars in Spring, Summer and Winter enable even the youngest and our more mature visitors to appreciate the high mountains at their very best. The skiing is right on the doorstep and the Summer activities range from canyoning/white water rafting through to biking, hiking, climbing and even flying! So there is truly something for everyone...

Local lakes provide ample opportunities for swimming in the summer. Several of the lakes have artificial beaches (sand covered areas) along part of their length.

Most of our guests either fly to Geneva airport (Easyjet) which is less than an hour's drive from the Alpine Retreat or drive from the UK (8 hours from the French ferry ports). Other airports include: Lyon (2 hours), and Turin (1 3/4 hours) drive. We can arrange transfers from Geneva airport if required.

We are ideally located in the village of Les Houches, Chamonix, and are only a 3-minute walk from shops, restaurants and bars.

The Alpine capital of Chamonix is just 5km away. We can arrange free tickets for the regular local buses and trains up and down the valley. For a taste of Italy, why not use the Mont Blanc tunnel; in less than half an hour you can be enjoying a pizza in the Italian town of Courmeyeur or hiking in the beautiful Val Ferret, or relaxing in the Roman Spa at Pre St Didier.

Further Details:

In the Chamonix valley, the whole concept of easy access to the mountains is born out in reality with trains, tramways and a host of superbly efficient cable cars which whisk you up to the hundreds of well-marked walking/biking trails. It is also easy to visit one of the many glaciers or to get a taste of river-rafting, canyoning or even paragliding, or perhaps to visit one of the many animal parks. Additionally, several activity centres offer everything from tennis to swimming and ice-skating to golf. Both Les Houches and Chamonix have a wide range of restaurants and bars which offer cuisine and entertainment to cater for every taste and budget.

From the Owner

The Alpine Retreat is ideally located between the 2 ski lifts of Les Houches Ski resort, Chamonix. We are just 5 mins walk from both stations and you can ski right back to the garden. The snow canons enable skiing from mid-Dec to Mid-Apr; the North facing slopes are perfect for good quality snow throughout the season. The excellent mix of runs favour mixed ability groups, with the famous World Cup run passing by the Retreat for the more adventurous! There are bars and restaurants about 5 mins walk down the road and the village centre is about 10 mins walk or a free bus ride away. The huge garden is ideal for sledging and snowmen in Winter, and after the snows, the uninterrupted views of the majestic Mont Blanc range are unsurpassed in the valley. Sitting and relaxing has never been so good!

  • Notes on accommodation: The farmhouse and apartments of the Alpine Retreat are decorated to a very high standard throughout. Despite having bed spaces for up to 10, the main farmhouse/chalet is often chosen by smaller groups who would like to enjoy the comfort and space provided by this unit. Also, it is possible to book both the farmhouse chalet and the apartment, and use the smaller apartment as a private 'en-suite' bedroom with the group all eating together in the larger farmhouse chalet. All the accommodation is suitable for families and the competitive price offers good value for money for smaller groups as well. Heating and all linen is provided. Outside: The Alpine Retreat has a large, private garden that is safe for all to enjoy. Winter guests can have fun sledging down the gentle slope of the upper lawn, whilst summer guests will love the bottom lawns and discreet patio areas to relax and read a book in peace and quiet. Tables and chairs allow all our visitors to enjoy the most spectacular views of the Mont Blanc mountain range without having to leave the comfort of their garden chairs. You can take breakfast in the garden or enjoy a BBQ in the evening. A gazebo makes it possible to enjoy the shade when it is too hot.
