About the property

Restored farmhouse between Braga and Guimaraes, with pool, BBQ, Wifi, table tennis - for 6 people

This is a 17C restored 'quinta', located between the historic Roman towns of Braga and Guimarães, and 5 minutes from the pretty spa town of Caldas das Taipas.

Set on the slopes of a picturesque mountain range, with forests behind and vines and fruit trees all around, it is easy to feel this is a world away from the chaotic pace of city life and relax to the sound of the church bells and the sounds of nature all around.

The farm is a working vineyard, producing red and white wine - offered to guests during their stay. There are many fruit trees all around the house - oranges, lemons, kiwis, plums, figs, pomegranates, passion fruit, sharon fruit etc and guests can help themselves.

The view from the house and pool is magnificent - showcasing the villages in the distance, the mountain ranges of Serra do Lombão and guests who are here late September are invited to join in with the grape harvest.

The owners live at the farm with their three children and they rent out the ground floor apartment, which is very spacious and incorporates the old and the new - the old stone walls in the living room/kitchen, with large double doors opening onto the outside patio, next to a built-in BBQ. There is a pergola over the patio, with a table and chairs seating 6 people. The pergola has jasmine and wisteria overhead.

The front of the house has another pergola with vines trained overhead. These vines have white grapes, suitable for eating in September and October.

Leading from the house to a large sunken tank, home to many goldfish, is a 'ramada' with kiwis - children are given fish food to feed the goldfish.This is a pretty area to just sit and read a book, under the shade of a large willow tree.

A few steps from the house is the swimming pool with lawn around, fenced off and gated. The pool is tiled, 12 metres in length and 6 metres in width. There are steps at the shallow end and a ladder at the deep end. It is a salt-water pool, considered better for skin than chlorine. The depth is 1m 80 at the deep end and 1m at the shallow end. Children must be suupervised by their parents at all times.

At the end of the pool there are steps down to a little terrace area, with table and chairs, housing an extra bathroom, with shower enclosure, wash hand basin and WC. The terrace overlooks the vines and is a perfect setting to enjoy a glass of vinho verde watching the evening sun go down behind the mountain range directly in front.

The apartment itself: the ground floor of the original house was used in the past to house the livestock and press the grapes by foot in a large granite tank, called the 'lagar.' Nowadays the only livestock the owners have are chickens, ducks and geese, who have their own 'quarters', in an orange and lemon grove situated a sensible distance from the house!. The old 'lagar' is now in the garden in front of the house.

The farm was bought by the present owners in 2000 and a huge restoration took place in 2001. The apartment is now both rustic - with the original stone walls in the living room/kitchen and modern - with a kitchen Island, induction cooker etc. The sitting room has satellite TV, Wifi and the bedrooms are large, with comfortable chairs, wardrobes, chest of drawers, writing desks, bedside lockers, new orthopaedic mattresses, all combining to offer an atmosphere of warmth, character and comfort.

The whole apartment has central heating and the living room has a wood burner to provide extra warmth (and ambiance) in the winter months

The apartment comprises 3 large bedrooms (2 doubles and 1 twin bedded room), with 2 bathrooms next to the bedrooms and there is a third bathroom (constructed in 2017), below the pool. All three bathrooms have shower enclosures and Virginia provides towels for inside and outside. Bath gel, shampoo, toothpaste, soap etc.are also provided - so it is possible to travel only with hand luggage.

The kitchen is well equipped with everything you might need - a washing machine, dishwasher, coffee machine, electric juicer (for all those oranges), toaster, kettle, ironing board and iron. There is a large dining table seating 8 next to the kitchen.

A welcoming snack or even meal is always provided and guests never arrive to an empty fridge!

The living room has a large cream leather sofa, with two reclining chairs. There is a flat screen TV with all the British channels, Portuguese channels and a DVD player - with DVDs (and many books and travel guides) on the bookshelf.

The house is ideal for the sporty, with a table tennis table which can be brought outside in the summer, a darts board, basket ball, magnificent walks behind the house leading to Sameiro and Bom Jesus and of course the new pool, just finished in 2017. This is shared with the owners. There is a solar shower providing hot water from the sun's rays and it is conveniently positioned right next to the pool. The pool area itself is very pretty, durng the day and at night, with the pool illuminated, and uplighting against the granite wall. There are sun loungers, parasols, and tables and chairs to while away the hours reading a good book.

This house has often been described as 'paradise on earth.' Nature is in abundance here - with the sounds of frogs, crickets, eagles, roosters and owls.

Guests are treated as part of the family, offered trips out - to Sameiro, to good cafés around, to historic Iron Age Settlements dating over 2000 years, historic walks such as the Caminho de Santigao - all within 10 minutes from the house. This is the land of churches, monasteries and convents, with interesting architecture and gardens in no short supply.

There is a very good local taverna down the hill from the house, serving lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Taipas has many restaurants, a spa offering luxurious treatments (face and body massages), a Turkish bath, sauna, indoor pool etc. This is also the land of cafes and cake shops, with 'pasteis de nata' and croissants in ample supply!

Longos itself has 3 cafes, one (Café Europa) with hot bread being produced every hour.

Next to Taipas there is the Celtic Settlement of Citânia de Briteiros, showing us one of Portugal's largest towns in existence over 2000 years ago. Castro de Sabroso is also nearby, still to be thoroughly excavated and restored! Virginia is happy to take you there to do some exploring and imagine life in a bygone era.

Places of interest in the local area are: the beach at Esposende, the towns of Guimarães and Braga, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos, the natural park of Peneda de Gerês (with the amazing modern church and cloisters of São Bento da Porta Aberta, the Barrosã cows with their long pointed horns, the wild 'garrano' ponies native to Gerês and herds of goats roaming over the mountainsides - and hot springs, walks in abundance, adventure trails, canoeing etc) and many make the trip to the Douro valley, only 1.5 hours away - to see the terraces where the vines are grown making the port wine. Régua has a very interesting port museum and there are various vineyards open to the public for tours and wine tastings.

On the subject of food and drink - Taipas has 3 good supermarkets - Pingo Doce, Intermarché and Continente - all with an abundance of fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables and wine - all set out region by region (Alentejo, Douro, Dão, Vinho Verde, Tejo etc).

A car is advisable in order to get out and see around. For those who really dislike driving, there is a bus from Porto airport to Braga (GetBus) and near the farm there is a taxi driver who could either collect guests from the airport or from the bus stop in Braga. Prior booking is necessary.The taxi driver, Sr.Manuel, speaks Portuguese and French but little English - Virginia is perfectly happy to organize taxi trips out and give due instructions to Sr. Manuel.

The farm is part way up a mountain but the access is good - with either cobbled or tarmac roads and very little traffic. Despite feeling miles away from city life, Longos village (with cafés, bakery, little supermarket) is ony a few minutes away and there is so much to see and do in the local vicinity and slightly beyond!

About Virginia Henry Martins

Originally from N.Ireland - a linguist, followed by a lawyer, then a teacher, then a translator and now I concentrate on my tourist business. My husband is Portuguese and we have 3 children, which is a full-time job in itself.

We fell in love with the house and its view as soon as we saw it. We had it restored in the year 2001 and converted the ground floor into an independent apartment in 2004. I love meeting my guests, planning little itineraries and making suggestions for days out.

The location is perfect, in between Braga and Guimarães, near the sea and also fairly near Porto.

In 2017 we built the pool and Pool House, which we love. It's been a long year, with lots of builders coming and going but now the work is done and we can simply enjoy it.

Why Virginia Henry Martins chose Braga

We bought Tapada in 2000 as we loved the view, the location and the amount of land it had around it. We spent a year restoring the old property and planting vines, fruit trees and sourcing furniture.

In 2017 we decided to build a pool and annexe - it's still our precious baby. It definitely adds to the fun of living here and we hope people enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this apartment unique

The view, the fresh air, the sound of the frogs from the water tanks, the birds (eagles) and owls from the forest behind the house, the pool.... and all 10/20 minutes from the historic towns of Braga and Guimarães. No need to feel cut off from civilization - here you have the best of both worlds.

Guests are very welcome to the oranges, lemons, plums, eggs from our chickens etc. A bottle of our vinho verde is always there to greet guests as well as a welcoming snack or full meal - depending on when guests arrive here.

Children are welcome to use our childrens' bikes/toys/DVDs etc. We also have a table tennis table - and free Wifi.

I love updating my list of ideas for visitors - what they can see or do in the area and this is sent to guests when they've made their reservation, so they can plan their holiday in advance.

The area abounds in cafés and restaurants, churches and monasteries, gardens and spas, natural parks, historic towns and beach resorts are close by.

If you love to wake up to amazing views and the chime of bells pealing from the church in the village below - all enjoyed 'al fresco' with a cup of coffee, fresh oranges or kiwis from the farm, and croissants and hot fresh bread from the village bakery 5 minutes down the road you'll know the benefit of being here without having to think too hard!

Notes:
The farmhouse has central heating and a woodburner in the living room. It is walled in and we have a friendly Golden Retriever, a Labrador, cat, chickens, geese and goldfish. Guests will be offered fresh farm produce of the season (kiwis, plums, peaches, oranges, lemons etc) and the hosts provide a tasty snack for your arrival. The accommodation is a beautiful, quiet haven with spectacular views all around. There are lots of walks through the eucalyptus trees and the area abounds with parks and gardens. The bedrooms are luxuriously furnished. The living room/kitchen used to be the original wine house and retains the thick granite walls, which keeps the room cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Fans are provided for hot summer nights. There is internet access. The house is ideal for the sporty and for those who just want to sit back, take in the view, swim, sunbathe and relax. Deckchairs are provided! Outside: Extensive front and side gardens, planted with abundant fruit and decorative trees. The sitting room leads out to a patio area, covered over with wisteria and jasmin. There are also deck chairs and a large parasol. There is a built-in barbecue area next to the patio. A wooden pergola runs along the front of the house, with vines, roses and passion flowers trained over. The farm is on 5 different levels, planted with vines making red and white wine. Forest walks are right behind the house. If you don't want to cook, cheap/good restaurants abound nearby.

memorable holiday in a wonderfull location

Virginia gave us a wonderful welcome , with a lots of local information , the apartment was modern with a rustic feel , very comfortable , everything worked , a well laid out kitchen .

The local facilities ,shops were about 5km away with supermarkets about 10 km away offering a good choice of quality produce .

The locals were friendly and helpful .

Lots of things to do if you got bored reading .

A 100% family run business who cared and shared your experiences .

Great stay at gorgeous home in northern Portugal

We had wonderful stay at this beautiful home, it is quite spacious and very comfortably furnished.There's a great kitchen for cooking, comfortable sofas for reading and very good beds.The apartment is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, the setting is spectacular, quiet and yet close to many major sights. Virginia and her family went out of their way to make us feel welcome, and provided many suggestions for local experiences we could not have found ourselves. We also enjoyed fresh eggs, oranges and wine from her farm! We highly recommend this elegant property and great hosts.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for this lovely review. We do our best to ensure everyone knows what is going on locally and that they don't miss out on the main 'must see' places in the area. There is lots to do and see and I like to tailor my suggestions to each family/group's individual preferences. Some like walking, others visiting historical settlements and churches. We know the area well as we've been living here for 18 years. Having people to stay at our farm is a pleasure. Guests are very welcome to help themselves to the oranges, lemons and kiwis in the winter months and plums in the summer. We usually have a surplus of eggs from our chickens and we make our own red and white wine- always offered to our guests. The farmhouse is in a magnificent setting and often guests just prefer to sit outside, with a cup of tea and a novel and enjoy the view to the sound of the church bells down in the valley.

Tre härliga höstdagar på hemtrevlig vingård

Härligt boende med uteplats och utsikt över vinplantagen, nyrenoverat kök, stora badrum och generellt mycket gott om plats. Barnen stortrivdes med snäll katt och hund, och pingisbord i vinkällaren. Vi blev mycket väl mottagna och fick många bra tips om utflykter; härlig vandring i Geres med bad i vattenfall, marknad i Barcelos, och klättring på DiverLanhoso. Det enda som krånglade var informationen rörande betalningen, men det löste sig på bästa sätt. Vi skulle absolut kunna tänka oss att komma tillbaka.

The payment system was a bit of a mystery (to you and me) as HomeAway have recently changed their system - just as well I noticed you had paid Home Away and... a deposit to me!!! (Mamma mia!) Groot, sfeervol schoon huis met een grote groene tuin. Heerlijk om je vakantie door te brengen.

Het huis en de plek op de heuvel zijn prachtig met een mooie beplanting en de uitzichten in het dal zijn fenomenaal.

Binnen is het heel ruim met een sfeervolle inrichting voorzien van alle voorzieningen. Je komt niets te kort.

Je vakantie is hierdoor al een groot succes.

Virginia is een geweldige gastvrouw en geeft je antwoord op al je vragen. Geeft ook tips wat te doen en waar.

Bij aankomst een geweldige lunch en de dag voor vertrek een barbecue aangeboden door Virginia.

Het verkennen van de prachtige omgeving is ideaal vanuit het huis zoals, Braga, Guimareas en Porto. Zelfs Santiago is goed te doen om te bezoeken .

Zeker een aanrader en een volgend bezoek waard omdat er in de omgeving zoveel is te zien en te doen.

A hidden gem!

My two friends and I had a fantastic few days at this beautiful Quinta. We managed to pack a lot into a few days, visiting Braga, Guimaraes and Porto, all beautiful cities.

The Quinta is so well situated - you can walk to Sameiro and Bom Jesus from it and enjoy a coffee and nata at one of the many cafes as a reward for your exertion! Highly recommended! This won't be our last visit!

Wonderful family holiday!

We had a wonderful stay with Virginia, Jose and family (and dog, cat, chickens and geese!). It is truly a special place, and we have many happy memories of our stay there. The location is great for touring around northern Portugal, with many amazing places within easy reach. The apartment is excellent and has everything you need for a very comfortable holiday. We had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to go back! Thanks again Virginia for making us all feel so welcome.

Lots of excellent woodland walks around the house, with eucalyptus and pine trees everywhere. Easy to follow the Santiago trail or just walk to Sameiro or Bom Jesus.

History - the Celtic settlements of Citânia de Briteiros and Castro de Sabroso are only a 10 minute drive away.

Gerês National Park is 40 mins away and has excellent watersport facilities and breathtaking walks.

The religious sancturaries of Sameiro and Bom Jesus are within walking distance of the house. They have parks, gardens, cafés, views over Braga and are pleasant places to visit at any time of the day.

For city life, it's easy to drive to Oporto (1 hour) or take the train. Also, it's possible to drive to the Douro valley, see the spectacular terraces and return in the same day.

Braga and Guimarães are 10 mins away. Braga is known as the Rome of Portugal - lots of churches, monasteries, gardens. Guimarães has a castle and Duke's Palace, where the first King of Portugal lived, Dom Afonso Henriques. There is a cable car up to the top of Penha, in Guimarães - fun for children and adults alike.

Póvoa de Lanhoso also has a castle and excellent views over the surrounding landscape.

Gastronomy - lots of reasonably priced restaurants - offering local delicacies, eg roast pork. Portuguese wines are excellent, and very reasonably priced.

Sporty: Excellent public swimming pool complexes, in Taipas, 4 kms from the house as well as 2 tennis courts.

Health and wellness: fresh fruit from the farm and a spa in Taipas, with steam room, dry room, jacuzzi, massage, facial treatments, etc.

Taipas has a good market every Monday, selliing fruit and veg, clothes, towels, hats, pottery, chickens etc!

Coast/Beach:

Esposende, which is about 35 minutes drive away, has an extensive white sandy beach. Other popular beaches in the area are Povoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Viana do Castelo and Caminha.

The beach at Porto is also very nice, with little coves and cafes along Boa Vista. It's possible to have a morning of shopping in Porto and a session at the beach in the afternoon!

Just north of Esposende there are some magnificent empty beaches with white sand and rolling sand dunes.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Oporto, 1 hour away from the house. We recommend hiring a car, as public transport is not available in country areas. Lisbon airport is about 4 hours away. Vigo, in Galicia, is about 2 hours away.

It is possible to drive - boats from Portsmouth/Plymouth to Santander (or Bilbão), then about a 7 hour drive south. The boat does take 24 hours but is quite pleasant. If the boat arrives in the evening, best stay in a hotel in Santander and drive to Portugal in the morning.

For those who are coming for a weekend only (and do not want to drive) it is possible to catch the 'Get Bus' from Porto airport to Braga and then a taxi to the house (10 mins).

Distances:

The village of Santa Cristina de Longos is a 2 minute drive away from the house, a 10 minute walk downhill! The town of Caldas das Taipas is 5 minutes drive away. Citania de Briteiros is a Celtic settlement 10 mins away. Braga and Guimarães are wonderful for shopping, eating out, to admire the medieval architecture and are 10-15 mins away. Porto is a 1 hour drive away. You can go there by train, free carparking at Braga or Guimarães railway stations. Gerês national park is 45 minutes drive away.

The village of Santa Cristina de Longos has several cafes, a good bakery, and a small grocery shop. It has three restaurants. Taipas spa town is only 5 minutes away and has lots of cafes, bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets, banks, a post office, a large outdoor swimming pool complex, thermal baths with a pool, jacuzzi, offering various types of spa treatments eg massage. Market day in Taipas is Monday. Barcelos market is Thursdays. Braga and Guimarães are very attractive historic cities. There is a cable car going up to the attractive wooded Penha area in Guimarães. There are lots of churches and museums to visit and excellent restaurants, from very reasonable to fairly expensive. The owners have a file setting out all the restaurants in the area, the price range and directions how to get to them. The area is filled with vines and eucalyptus trees, very picturesque and quite mountainous. It is of particular interest to people who enjoy walking and to families with children. There are lots of parks, pools, an adventure park; beaches are 35 mins away. The area is full of farms, producing their own wine. This is on sale directly from the farmer or in the local restaurants, of which there are many. Guests are encouraged to eat any fruit that's in season free of charge. There is no traffic around and the farm is walled in. Guests mostly enjoy sitting around, swimming in the pool, watching the birds, admiring the scenery and the flowers, reading books with tea or wine in hand. Throughout the year the apartment and the Pool House are rented out separately - at 700€ each per week. In the summer months they are rented out together to groups of up to 10 people as we decided this works better with the pool. For the two houses together (for 10 people) the price is 1600€.
Notes on prices:
Price includes cost of central heating, diesel operated.
There is a wood burner and we provide free wood.
Free fruit, when in season.
Eggs from the hens, when they're laying.
Hosts provide a welcoming snack for guests' arrival.
The kitchen is well equippped, with food, coffee, tea etc, as well as washing powder, dishwasher capsules, all included in the price.
The bathrooms have soap, bath gel, shampoo, toothpaste etc - so no need to worry about bringing heavy toiletries.
