About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom farmhouse apartment, 10 minutes from Braga and 20 minutes from Guimarães. Mountain views in front and woodland walks behind house

Large, beautifully restored granite stone farmhouse, commanding stunning views over mountains, valleys and vineyards. This is a working vineyard, producing red and white vinho verde wine and abundant with fruit trees. Arrive to a glass of chilled vinho verde and tapas from the area.

Behind the house are many woodland walks, leading to the religious sanctuaries of Sameiro and Bom Jesus. It is possible to spend a morning following the well marked Santiago de Compostela trail, beginning at the house and stopping at the church of Santa Marta, in Falperra. Walk home to a delicious (and very reasonable) lunch at Bar da Igreja, next to the house.

Guests have their own entrance and are totally self-sufficient. There is a wooden pergola running along the front of the house with vines, roses and passion flowers trained to grow up and over, providing refreshing shade.

The double doors of the sitting room/kitchen open out onto a patio area, covered over by wisteria and jasmine. It provides excellent shade in the summer - for breakfast, lunch and dinner al fresco. Next to the patio is a barbecue and the garden has swings and a slide for young children.

There is also a table tennis table (with bats and balls) in the "adega," so you'll be surrounded by wine and vats. Tennis can be played in front of the house. Every year we buy a little swimming pool so children can cool off and play in the heat, supervised by parents enjoying a cup of tea (or orange juice) in the shade of the orange trees.

The house is set in the middle of the countryside, amidst vines and eucalyptus forests but is only a 10/15 minute drive to Braga and Guimarães.

4 kms away is the pretty town of Taipas, with several outdoor swimming pools, varying in price from 1.50€ to 3.50€- for the whole day. Both have snack bars, with meals and cold drinks reasonably priced. Open from 10am-8pm.

Also, in Taipas park it is possible to rent the tennis courts, from the little wisteria-covered café next to them.

Taipas, our nearest town, 5 kms away, has a luxurious spa, with indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, Turkish bath and steam room and providing various treatments, such as facials, massage.

40 minutes away are the white sandy beaches of Apúlia, Esposende, Viana do Castelo and Caminha. The closest is Apúlia, a long beach with fantastic sand dunes, ideal for children to play and run along! Esposende has lots of restaurants, chic cafés overlooking the sea and is a busier beach than Apúlia. It is possible to rent little beach huts, for those who want to read or sit in the shade.

Bom Jesus is on the must list for anyone visiting Braga, and just a long stone's throw from the house!

Near the house, and for those interested in history, or just enjoying a good walk with stunning views around, there is Citânia de Briteiros, a Celtic Settlement. The Visitors' Centre provides a map of the area and it's possible to spend many an enjoyable hour imaginiing how life used to be over 2000 years ago.

Another enjoyable place to visit is Gerês National Park, with its rock pools, beautiful scenery, walks, views down onto the sparkling water of the dam and views up over the jagged high mountains. It is possible to practise water sports on the dam. There is also a shop in the middle of the village which organises pony trekking, etc. Gerês is a spa town and several hotels in the village offer spa trreatments. There are always ladies in the village, sitting along the roadside, selling aromatic teas and honey from the area. The village itself has shops and restaurants, cafés and a deli.

As there is so much to do in the area, it's always good to come home and relax at Quinta da Tapada, listening to the church bells down in the valley and breathing in the fresh air, over a glass of vinho verde, made at the farm.

This summer the apartment has a lovely new island with electric cooker and induction hob, so while dad cooks mum can be enjoying a glass of chilled house white...

The two double bedrooms have new (as of July 2016) orthopaedic mattresss - to ensure a good nights sleep.

About Virginia Henry Martins

I've been living in Portugal since 1999. My husband is Portuguese and we have 3 children of 11, 9 and 8.

We fell in love with the house and its view as soon as we saw it. We had it restored in the year 2001 and converted the ground floor into an independent apartment in 2004. I love meeting my guests, planning little itineraries and making suggestions for days out.

The apartment is large and well decorated, with all mod cons. Living on site means if something goes wrong, we're here to fix it immediately.

The location is perfect, in between Braga and Guimarães, near the sea and also fairly near Porto.

We have quite a few repeat visits, which I'm always happy about!

Our children are always happiest when we have other children around - we often organize outings together!

Being a café expert I also offer bespoke tours of the surrounding towns through their café world (yes, an excuse to visit cafés and have a coffee and cake but then to walk it off by doing a whistle-stop tour of the main points of interest in the town!!). Another of my hobbies is walking through the mountains around here - so now I've started offering guests morning or afternoon treks - along the Santiago de Compostela trail (which is 5 mins from the house) or through the forest to the religious sanctuary of Sameiro - with a coffee stop obligatory at the end!!

Why Virginia Henry Martins chose Braga

My husband works in Braga, which is only 10 minutes away.

We had been looking for a house for a long time, saw this one, loved the view and location, put in an offer and it was accepted immediately! To our excitement, everything went ahead as planned and we only had to find builders to restore the original building (in a bad state) and decide what to do with the land attached to the property. We decided to plant vines and make our own wine. We also planted lots of fruit trees - oranges, lemons, clementines, kiwis, plums etc.

It's great to live in the country but only be 10 minutes from Braga and about 15 minutes from Guimarães. Taipas is a perfect little town and only 5 minutes drive away. It has parks and swimming pools, an abundance of cafés, a spa, banks and supermarkets.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The view, the fresh air, the sound of the frogs from the water tanks, the birds and owls from the forest behind the house.

Guests are very welcome to the oranges, lemons, plums, eggs from our chickens etc. A couple of bottles of our vinho verde is always there to greet guests who can buy more at a modest price during their stay.

Children are welcome to use our childrens' bikes/toys/DVDs etc.

I love updating my list of ideas for visitors - what they can see or do in the area and this is sent to guests when they've made their reservation, so they can plan their holiday in advance.

As of 2017 we are organising walking tours (one is through the forest to Sameiro and another is following part of the Santiago de Compostela trail), also café tours discovering 3 cities through their cafés. And, a monuments' tour - Sameiro, Bom Jesus, Celtic Settlement at Citânia, Tibães Monastery outside Braga, the Dukes Palace in Guimarães.

The area abounds in cafés and restaurants, churches and monasteries, gardens and spas, natural parks, historic towns and beach resorts are close by.

If you love to wake up to the fragrance of overhead wisteria and the chime of bells pealing from the church in the village below, while admiring the distant views over the hills and valleys in front - all enjoyed 'al fresco' with a cup of coffee, fresh oranges or kiwis from the farm, and croissants and hot fresh bread from the village bakery 5 minutes down the road you'll know the benefit of being here without having to think too hard!

Notes on accommodation: The farmhouse has central heating and a woodburner in the living room. The farm is walled in and we have a friendly Golden Retriever, a cat, chickens, geese and goldfish. Guests will be offered fresh farm produce of the season (kiwis, plums, peaches, oranges, lemons etc) and the hosts provide a tasty snack for your arrival, dinner and breakfast if you arrive late. The accommodation is a beautiful, quiet haven with spectacular views all around. There are lots of walks through the eucalyptus trees and the area abounds with parks and gardens. The bedrooms are luxuriously furnished. The living room/kitchen used to be the original wine house and retains the thick granite walls, which keeps the room cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Fans are provided for hot summer nights. There is internet access. Limitless hot water provided in the summer by solar panels. The house is ideal for the sporty and for those who just want to sit back, take in the view, sunbathe and relax. Deckchairs are provided! Outside: Extensive front and side gardens, planted with abundant fruit and decorative trees. The sitting room leads out to a patio area, covered over with wisteria and jasmin. There are also deck chairs and a large parasol. There is a built-in barbecue area next to the patio. A wooden pergola runs along the front of the house, with vines, roses and passion flowers trained over. The farm is on 5 different levels, planted with vines making red and white wine. Forest walks are right behind the house. With some notice a guide can accompany guests on 1-3 hour treks through the forest to Sameiro and along the Santiago de Compostela trail (beginning 5 mins from the house). For those preferring to arrive at Sameiro by jeep, taking the forest route, this can be arranged, including a stop-off at the café. NB. Small cost for walking tours. If you don't want to cook, cheap/good restaurants abound nearby. Alternatively, as a treat, try out the local cuisine with a cookery demonstration "in house.

Tre härliga höstdagar på hemtrevlig vingård

Härligt boende med uteplats och utsikt över vinplantagen, nyrenoverat kök, stora badrum och generellt mycket gott om plats. Barnen stortrivdes med snäll katt och hund, och pingisbord i vinkällaren. Vi blev mycket väl mottagna och fick många bra tips om utflykter; härlig vandring i Geres med bad i vattenfall, marknad i Barcelos, och klättring på DiverLanhoso. Det enda som krånglade var informationen rörande betalningen, men det löste sig på bästa sätt. Vi skulle absolut kunna tänka oss att komma tillbaka.

The payment system was a bit of a mystery (to you and me) as HomeAway have recently changed their system - just as well I noticed you had paid Home Away and... a deposit to me!!! (Mamma mia!) Groot, sfeervol schoon huis met een grote groene tuin. Heerlijk om je vakantie door te brengen.

Het huis en de plek op de heuvel zijn prachtig met een mooie beplanting en de uitzichten in het dal zijn fenomenaal.

Binnen is het heel ruim met een sfeervolle inrichting voorzien van alle voorzieningen. Je komt niets te kort.

Je vakantie is hierdoor al een groot succes.

Virginia is een geweldige gastvrouw en geeft je antwoord op al je vragen. Geeft ook tips wat te doen en waar.

Bij aankomst een geweldige lunch en de dag voor vertrek een barbecue aangeboden door Virginia.

Het verkennen van de prachtige omgeving is ideaal vanuit het huis zoals, Braga, Guimareas en Porto. Zelfs Santiago is goed te doen om te bezoeken .

Zeker een aanrader en een volgend bezoek waard omdat er in de omgeving zoveel is te zien en te doen.

A hidden gem!

My two friends and I had a fantastic few days at this beautiful Quinta. We managed to pack a lot into a few days, visiting Braga, Guimaraes and Porto, all beautiful cities.

The Quinta is so well situated - you can walk to Sameiro and Bom Jesus from it and enjoy a coffee and nata at one of the many cafes as a reward for your exertion! Highly recommended! This won't be our last visit!

Wonderful family holiday!

We had a wonderful stay with Virginia, Jose and family (and dog, cat, chickens and geese!). It is truly a special place, and we have many happy memories of our stay there. The location is great for touring around northern Portugal, with many amazing places within easy reach. The apartment is excellent and has everything you need for a very comfortable holiday. We had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to go back! Thanks again Virginia for making us all feel so welcome.

if you like warmth welcome and nature stay...

... this apartment is for you!

We had a great time, in the middle of winter. We keep wonderful memories of evenings by the fireplace. It was sweet, very calm and on the top of this, Virginia - the owner - is just perfect. Discrete when needed, present when necessary and always of good advice.

Don't miss it!

The apartment is vast, extremely well furnished; the kind of place you don't want to quit when the time of departure comes.

Fantastic stay in a beautiful farmhouse

We chose the Quinta for a half term break and it proved to be a sound choice. The apartment is very comfortable and a cosy fire was lit in the wood burner when the nights were cool. Virginia was full of great suggestions for what to do and we visited a newly opened spa in the local town. We all enjoyed this greatly especially as we had the place to ourselves! This was probably because it was midweek and February.

We had a delicious and memorable meal in the Tibaes monastery, which Virginia had told us about.

For a much cheaper but no less memorable experience, we recommend the Bar da Igreja which is very near the Quinta.

All in all we had a fantastic time and would definitely go back again.

Owner's Response: The area is well situated for exploring (Braga has recently been voted Portugal's most romantic city) and also perfect just for sitting around, enjoying the views and spoiling ourselves with the local gastronomy - and now the 18C spa in Taipas has finally opened its doors to the public after being shut for renovations lasting almost 2 years. I note you enjoyed Bar da Igreja - it's a 10 minute walk away and is quite a treasure, costing only 5€ a head for a delicious, traditionally cooked Portuguese meal (including wine). The São Martinho de Tibães Monastery is half an hour away and has a special atmosphere - the interior is quite splendid (especially the Baroque church) and it has a large rambling garden, with fountains, a staircase to heaven and a great lake. The restaurant is the most discreet you'll ever find - known by word of mouth and a small sign on the wall outside. You're served by nuns from the Carmelite Order and the food and décor is first class. I try to make guests feel at home when they arrive at the house - with a fire burning in the hearth in the winter and food on the table when they arrive. My philosophy is that a holiday starts the moment you step into the house and it's time to rest and de-stress before having to get back into the car and go food shopping. Virginia Henry Martins
