//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Using the farmhouse as a base to explore the Netherlands:

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Are you looking for a central base from which to explore the Netherlands?

///////////////////////////////

- Apart from being able to explore the north and east of the country with ease, ‘Under the Oaks’ is also very centrally located for visiting both the south / south-west of the Netherlands, as well as the west of the country. The travelling times for reaching these areas are considerably shorter than travelling via the highway network in the west of the country, as our roads and highways here in the north and east are less congested

///////////////////////////////

- Being situated in the south-west corner of Drenthe, Diever is placed at the crossroads of three Dutch provinces - Drenthe, Overijssel and Friesland - all uniquely different to one another. So when you are in Drenthe, why not discover Friesland and Overijssel provinces as well - the borders lie just 15 minutes away by car, with the highway just 11 kms (7 miles) away!

///////////////////////////////

Driving times from Diever to other parts of the Netherlands?

///////////////////////////////

- it’s less than 2 hours from Diever to the southern city of Eindhoven (the Belgian border is just south of there)

///////////////////////////////

A visit to Amsterdam while staying in Diever?

///////////////////////////////

- many of our guests drive the 45 minutes to the suburbs of Almere, and then take the short train journey from there into Amsterdam city. It’s much easier to park your car outside the city and use the fast and efficient public transport from there!

///////////////////////////////

Wishing to explore Rotterdam and the Hague in the south-west of the country as well?

///////////////////////////////

- these cities are also just 90-120 minutes away. Again, travelling times from our region to these cities is faster than from many other parts of the country, as the highway network via Zwolle to Utrecht has lighter traffic

///////////////////////////////

We want you to have a wonderful and memorable holiday! It is our pleasure to be of assistance to you during your stay and our priority to make sure that you will have a pleasant time at the holiday farmhouse. We are happy to offer any help on preparing your trip

Guestbook comments from the owner

‘We can’t thank you enough for making our family holiday a very special time for all of us. After to having postpone our vacation a year due to the accident we had & your help in getting it rescheduled, it was as if we had known you both for a few years. For all your help to us & our children is just hard to say thanks, from all of us. The farm house, location in Drenthe, was perfect for all the biking we wanted to do. The house was very comfortable for all nine of us and your help with bike, train, restaurant the local open-air Shakespeare theater reservations we greatly appreciated! This being our 5th trip to bike Holland, we have seen a lot of the country, but Drenthe will remain our favorite & we shall return. After a month here we still hate to leave. We will recommend Under the Oaks to all interested in really seeing rural Holland. From all our family who so much enjoyed our stay, we say thanks for making it so through your hospitality. With best regards’ (2008)

‘My family just finished a stay at Under the Oaks in Diever & had an absolutely wonderful time. There was nothing that we needed for our stay that wasn't provided for in the house. The accommodations completely exceeded our expectations! It was so spacious & well equipped! David & Monique are fantastic hosts who truly want their guests to get the best experience possible in the Diever area. The wealth of information that they can provide assistance was fantastic! We can't wait to go back! A gorgeous house, in a beautiful setting with the grocery store a few doors down, the butcher & baker also just a short walk down the street, a quick stroll to the ice cream parlour make the setting absolutely perfect! The location is also so central to many activities in the area! We can't wait to go back visit again on our next trip to Holland. If you are considering staying at 'Under the Oaks', don't hesitate any longer! You can't go wrong with this place!’ (2011)

'This is by far the best vacation we've had in years, thanks to our hosts. Everything went smoothly. A lot of room & convenience for a very inexpensive cost. Everything was so close and convenient. Thanks for everything, you've been a great help. We will be Back’ (2011)

‘Our stay at the Farmhouse in Diever was wonderful! It truly felt like a 'home away from home'! We loved that we could walk to the local restaurants & shops. We rented bikes & rode on one of the many bike trails for hours exploring the countryside! Also, loved feeding the horse apples, carrots & bread & waking to the sound of birds each morning! The owners of the house are so helpful and kind & we felt very welcome. How nice to have wine & a bag of groceries for us when we arrived! We were close enough to anywhere in Holland that we wanted to visit & just a short drive to see the rest of the country. We felt so comfortable in the home , we just loved exploring the local area! I will recommend this home to everyone! It was a most wonderful vacation!’ (2013)

Hospitality with a Capital H!

  • 5 of 5

Under The Oaks is in an excellent location to discover a treasure of small villages set within this natural, and unique, area of The Netherlands – the province of Drenthe.

David’s fantastic welcome set the tone for our to-be-remembered stay with our family of nine: friendly and open communication, very knowledgeable of the area, walking us through our home-away-from-home, always available to answer any questions, yet respecting our privacy. In other words: Hospitality with a capital H!

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Here it is true! We opened the lovely bottle of wine, part of the welcome gift. “Proost!”, my sister-in-law and I said as our glasses touched. More than you can ask for, and everything you need, is already in place in this well-stocked kitchen. The Coop grocery store is close by and in a short time our groceries were put away. The smaller table is ideal for breakfast – since members of our group drift into the kitchen at different times for, here, you want to sleep in because the beds are so comfortable. The large table is perfect for all of us to gather around during dinner time, and to stay awhile, unhurried, stretching out the mealtime into the early hours of the evening.

Diever is a walking town. Step on the bike-and-foot path next to the farmhouse and you walk past the neighbour’s fields, where a black Frisian horse feeds on the lush grass. This path will lead you to a tranquil park, surrounded by homes. You will discover shops to explore, see the church with its steeple at the centre of town, and continue walking along quiet roads. We stopped and picked apples out of a wheel barrow, a present from an unknown giver, which was made into applesauce to accompany our meal. You will discover another park which is home to friendly ducks, turn the corner, pass a café, walk for a few minutes more, and: You are home. Dora S.

Hidden Gem in the Rural Netherlands

  • 5 of 5

We had never been to this part of the Netherlands before and were very impressed at this hidden gem of an area and a property. 2 families stayed for 1 week. The house is in the centre of a lovely village surrounded by National parks and forests. The village has everything a holidaymaker needs (Supermarket, Bike Hire, cafes, restaurants, weekly market) and the accommodation is well equipped. The owner lives in the house behind and is on hand to assist with advice, suggestions of things to do and bookings. When we arrived there was a very good welcome pack left including wine, beer as well as coffee, tea, bread, butter and cheese. Parking is easy and off road. Being Holland it is very flat and great bike riding country and we were pleased to see that there were tarmac bike pathways through the forest making it safe for children to cycle away from cars. For day trips you are about an hour away from the coast or from the border with Germany. However, there is a wealth of information at 'Under the Oaks' with ideas of things to do more locally.

Fantastic location and great property

  • 5 of 5

David could not have been more helpful. Absolutely fantastic location for cycling, walking, and boating at Giethorn. The house was well equipped and clean. The master bedroom is on the ground floor. Close to a fabulous supermarket, gift shops and restaurants. Everyone cycles in Holland so the pace of life is very relaxed. Would love to live there as everything feels safe and the people are friendly. At the back of the house there are horses an allotment and countryside. Being in Diever has inspired us to dust down our bikes and cycle. Directions from the airport are excellent and very straight forward.

David also has a great knowledge of the area and it's history.

Pleasant village escape

  • 4 of 5

This was a great retreat from urban stress in a lovely village setting with lots to explore on foot or by bike or car. The central location made for easy in-town living with pedestrian access to everything we needed - groceries, restaurants, bike rental, bakery, ice cream, post office - all within a short walk. The house had plenty of room, a clean, well equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds. David and Monique were great hosts with lots of suggestions for local activities and also helped to arrange our bike rental. We would certainly recommend Under the Oaks to friends.

The house is just perfect for the 11 of us ( 7 adults 4 children) David Monique and girls are great hosts and cater to all our needs from the welcome pack to bike hire. The house is in a gorgeous location with plenty to do for all ages, our group ranges from 3 to 68! We have already booked for next year.

Location

From the Owner

In 2004, here in the small Drenthe village of Diever, we found the perfect location for a holiday farmhouse. The property was originally the site of a very popular B&B, which operated from 1972 until 2004 (at which point the previous owners decided that it was time to retire!) We have discovered the most idyllic spot in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Being situated between two National Parks (including the largest area of wet heathland on continental Europe, at 'Dwingelderveld') allowing for many recreational activities, yet with close proximity to the motorway network making for easy day trips to other parts of the Netherlands and the German border, which is less than an hour away. If we can provide you with any local knowledge to make sure that you have the most perfect holiday then please contact us.
