About Daniele LUDWIG

This typical XIXth Century “Charentaise” was built around 1890

We have been the owner since mid-2011. Before, the property has belonged to an English couple since 1992 who has been developing it ever since.

Our strong bond with England has existed for over 50 years and our English family is regular guests to the main house or the gite.

We have recently moved to this area after 10 years living in Béarn near Pau.

Daniele LUDWIG purchased this house in 2011

Why Daniele LUDWIG chose Saintes area

We were looking for a holiday home for our Anglo-French family and friends.

It had to be not far from airport (La Rochelle / Bordeaux), near a train station (Saintes or Pons) with a TGV connection (Angoulême) and near the motorway (N10) from Paris.

We wanted to be near the sea, and south of the Loire, where there is a marked climate change. We like this area which is rich in cultural activities such music festivals. The climate here is the second sunniest area of France. We do get rain and strong storms from the Pyrenees, but they clear quickly and the heat builds up again. Winters are very soft.

What makes this house unique

We are at the heart of a lovely and peaceful hamlet surrounding by a nice environment (vineyards and fiels of sun flowers). This house was the main house of this small community, and its “charentaise“ architecture reflects its importance. The previous English owners have developed the field into an wonderful garden and the pool adds to the pleasures. There is often no sound save that of the birds!

Although we are in the heart of the country-side: 5 minutes' drive of Gemozac and Pons, 20 minutes’ drive from Saintes. Saintes is an important cultural centre, with a renowned Festival of Music in early July, and a program of colourful and interesting events throughout the summer. For those who want to taste the wonderful spirit, Cognac is accessible with 30 minutes drive. There are many leisure activities in the area.

Guestbook comments from the manager

A visitors' book is kept in the gite and we welcome constructive comments. For example :

- Klaus, Pia, Matilde, Amalie Iversen (Copenhagen, Denmark) - July 2014. Thanks to Daniele for hosting us. It was our first time as a family to visit this beautiful region, so we were quite curious about all of it. You have handled it in many ways -from the early stage wit booking till our time here- We felt very welcome an comfortable. This is now "our" place in France

- Johny, Nicola, William and Peter Bush (Oxford -UK) - August 2013; We have had an extremely enjoyable fortnight here at Gîte La Chade ! It is the most lovely, rural spot and we have been made to feel very welcome by Danielle. The house is so well equipped and it is great to have a wonderful superb supermarket so close... Thank you for looking after us so hospitably - this is a wonderful, peaceful part of France. It would be great to

return one day.

- The Walshes - Bolton (UK) - June 2013 ; a weel slotted and most peaceful gite. Thank you Danielle for being so attentive and giving us our space. Talmont is a must to visit as is Royan, and all the beaches of the Girond estuary. A very peaceful week in a lovely part of France. Thank you.

- Kate & Mike Hart (Stevenage UK) - May 2013 ; we decided to return after such a wonderful time last year and again we were not disappointed. TY

Memorable stay at La Chade

  • 5 of 5

It was our first visit to this region of France. The scenery was so beautiful with the vineyards and cornfields; it was indeed cut off from the rest of the world! After a long journey, Danielle, the owner greeted us warmly. Due to the time of our late arrival at the gite and it being on a Saturday, she was very kind to offer us some food and also showed us around to buy something to eat. She also provided a travel cot for our four month old baby so we did not have to worry about transporting our own.

The gite is fully equipped in terms of utensils where you can prepare any meal and even a barbecue. We have really enjoyed the alfresco area along with the swing and the beautiful garden with different types of trees: apple, pear, fig and all kinds of flowers and shrubs. For us who live in a flat, it was paradise!!

The gite is a Charentaise house and so very rustic with stones and wood works everywhere. It was like a dream because we love this type of interior design. For late September, we also managed to enjoy the amazing pool.

Its proximity to Cognac meant that we could do wine and Cognac tastings and we made new friends. There are also other cities like La Rochelle to visit the Fort Boyard. But for us it was more of a’ relaxation’ vacation and we made the most of the gite.

A week that went by too quickly and it was already time to leave.

We are going again in July next year.

A relaxing and peaceful week in France!

  • 5 of 5

Daniele made us most welcome in her beautiful gite and our family enjoyed a great week en France! The gite had everything we needed and was very clean. We went on some great day trips with our children when the weather was a bit overcast, and on the sunny days we relaxed by the pool. Great supermarkets nearby also.

Charming Spacious Gite

  • 5 of 5

We spent a fantastic week at this charming gite. Daniele was the perfect host greeting us when we arrived after a long journey. The gite itself is very well equipped and has lots of information on where to visit in the surrounding area. We especially liked La Rochelle, Saintes and Pons. Our Grandson who is five fell in love with the swimming pool and so we made sure that we swam every day. It was wonderful having the pool all to ourselves to cool off in. We also enjoyed the alfresco eating area and also the lovely big garden. All in all we can thoroughly recommend this delightful holiday home and would love to return one day.

Fantastic location, peaceful yet easy access to towns & restaurants. Gite was well equipped, but our charming hostess Danièle was at hand for anything we needed. Communication was excellent as was the whole booking process and follow up.

Look forward to a return visit one day.

Stunning spacious property in beautiful grounds

  • 5 of 5

Photos really do not do this place justice. It is beautiful and HUGE! We had a lovely stay here. The location is quiet in a little village / hamlet but was only 10/15mins drive from supermarkets. The description is mostly accurate, however it should be mentioned that though there is wifi, you can only pick this up in the main bedroom upstairs near the adjoining wall. This was disappointing as we had to use our mobile data anywhere else in the house including the lounge for the children on ipad which obviously cost us extra. It was very clean and well equipped, we lacked nothing. Except the dvd player did not play sound so we had to buy a cable to use our in-car dvd player, as all TV channels in French. We would say, although we would without hesitation stay here again with OLDER children, it is perhaps not as suitable for our 1 year old and we wouldn't bring her back until about 4 years old. There is no stairgate at the bottom of the stairs which she kept climbing. And internal steps in and out of bedrooms which she also kept falling down. This is most suitable for school age children I would personally say. So we may be back in 3 years' time! The windows are very low upstairs and do not lock, but they are relatively stiff to open so I felt I could trust that my 4 year old couldn't open them, though she did try as right at her level! I feel it's also worth mentioning if you plan to cook for the 4 people it sleeps, the large double gas oven we were told on arrival does not work so we had to use a countertop toaster-oven which is small. However there is a BBQ so if you cook some that way and some in the toaster-oven or on hob you will be fine. Daniele the owner who lives on site was most helpful in telling us where we could visit locally. There was also a great binder of local attraction leaflets and a book with hints from previous guests on where to visit. We loved Royan beach, Palmyre zoo and planet exotica, all well within an hour drive. Most of the rest of our time was spent around the gorgeous pool, which our children absolutely loved! They also loved the gardens towards the bottom of the property where there is a swing set and plenty of room to run around! We would, and have, recommended this property to many family and friends with older families or no children. It was also very reasonably priced. Overall a great time had and we will be back at some point!

First class property in superb location.

  • 5 of 5

As a child, my family and I (sometimes friends to) visited France every year for our summer holidays.

My last holiday in France was 24 years ago and it was to the same area, an area that I have wanted to return to (as an adult) for many years now.

My wife had never done this type of holiday (driving/ferry/self accommodation) before and took some persuading before eventually agreeing to it.

All I can say is, the house was by far the best, well equipped and fantastic house I have stayed in.

The garden/outdoor area is such a fantastic place to relax or eat.

Daniele was a better neighbour than we have at home.

The area/location was perfect for our needs and wishes.

Royan, Marrenes, Pons, Cognac and Saintes are all fantastic but for us Oradour-Sur-Glane was a bit further away that we had realised.

The only down side was the weather during the first week but the second week of sunshine certainly made up for that.

I have already recommended this property to some family members and although my wife was quite sceptical to start with, she has also recommended to friends.

If you are reading this with other areas/properties in mind, they would have to be pretty special to be better than this place.
