Country House in La Taha, Pitres, High Alpujarra, Sierra Nevada, Andalucia - Peaceful Location Just Outside the Village in the Silence of the Mountain Scenery

Cortijo la Suerte, a charming holiday home in the Alpujarras region of Andalucia in southern Spain is situated on the southern slopes of Spanish Sierra Nevada (Alpujarras). A 'cortijo' is a small farm, or farmhouse. 'Suerte' means luck, chance, fate or good fortune. It was our good fortune (or perhaps fate) to acquire this rustic farmhouse, and we hope that you will be fortunate enough to visit Cortijo la Suerte.

Cortijo la Suerte provides comfort, simplicity and privacy, and gives our guests an authentic experience of Spanish rural life. It has stunning views, fruit trees, own spring water, about one acre of land. It is situated on the slopes near the village of Pitres. The nearest neighbours are farmers. The large swimming pool, central heating in the living room and floor heating in the two main bedrooms are luxuries that add to the rural living style. There is no connection to the electrical mains system, a gas mains nor water mains. Electricity is provided by solar cells and batteries in combination with a sophisticated electronic unit that provides 230 Volts AC, so normally you do not realize that you are living in a solar powered house. As a backup there is a modern electrically started silenced 3 KVA Honda generator that runs on propane gas. Because we have ample solar capacity the generator is not needed in summer.

Propane gas is in tanks in a gas shed that complies with all regulations. It is not needed in summer as hot water comes from solar collectors.

Water comes from our own spring on the land and can be beautifully tasting untreated mountain spring water. However presently the water flow is so low that we advise not to drink water from our taps, but stick to bottled water or water from the many springs in the villages.

The terrain around the Cortíjo consists of meadows, a garden, and a small orchard. There are cherries, prunes, apples, pears, blackberries, walnuts, mulberries, almonds, pomegranates, kakis, all depending on the season of course.

The access road only leads to our property and that of three or four farmhouses around it. It is partly sealed, and for the last few hundred metres it is unsealed.

In this part of Spain the farmers do not live on their land but in the village. Therefore it is absolutely quiet and the only people you will see are the farmers working on their land. The area lies within a Natural Park, which surrounds the National park of the Sierra Nevada.

About Bruno and Pauline van Dunne

We are a Dutch couple, Bruno a retired engineer and Pauline, a qualified occupational therapist. We have traveled all over the world and we now live in Holland, though we still travel a lot. Our children have settled in Holland, Australia and France and we have three grandchildren. We enjoy gardening, skiing, hiking in the mountains, tennis and field hockey. Pauline played the violin in the Delfts Symphonie Orkest (, a high quality amateur orchestra. Ivan is the caretaker of the Cortijo. He is British and lives in Mecina, a village in the valley below us. He will welcome you, show you around and help you when needed. Liz, his partner makes the most wonderful cakes and jams. Loli is a young Spanish lady who does the cleaning and the laundry service.

Hace tres días que hemos vuelto a Sevilla y todos los días nos acordamos de lo bien que lo hemos pasado en el Cortijo la Suerte, realmente nos ha encantado la casa. Está ubicada en un entorno impresionante, desde la terraza de arriba nos hemos tomado cada mañana un té contemplando las maravillosas vistas del valle y algunas tardes yo he practicado un poco de yoga en el mismo sitio.

Nos ha impresionado el enorme esfuerzo y el trabajo que hacéis para que la casa sea sostenible y respetuosa con el medioambiente, os damos la enhorabuena por ello. Aunque hemos podido comprobar que esto también tiene algunas incomodidades, una noche se acabó el gas y no pudimos cambiar la bombona hasta el día siguiente que vino Iván... en fin, supongo que son cosas normales en este tipo de casas.

Hemos aprovechado el entorno haciendo varias rutas de media y alta montaña (subimos al Mulhacen!) y visitado todos los pueblos de la zona y nos ha encantado! La piscina estaba muy limpia y la hemos disfrutado mucho.

Han sido unas vacaciones perfectas y solo encontramos palabras bonitas para el Cortijo la Suerte! En el futuro nos encantaría volver a pasar unos días a esta maravillosa casa.

Notes on accommodation: Because of the hilly area and the deep, unfenced swimming pool, the house seems less appropriate for children under 6 years. Internet access is included in the rent. The toilet of the third bathroom is outside the annex, so it can be accessed from the pool area. Outside: There are several possibilities for barbecue. The upper part of the property has a fruit garden. All the fruits of the season are yours to enjoy! (see the fruit calendar on our personal website) On the highest terrace is a large table for dining in the open air. The middle terrace, with BBQ, is covered and it is the best place to stay on a hot summers day. The Jacuzzi is next to this terrace. There are several outdoor chairs and tables. On the terrace next to the private swimming pool you can stay all day and there is ample possibility to take sunbaths. And last but not least: on the romantic terrace in front of the annex (with third bedroom). There is plenty of place on the property to set up tents for the children or for campervans for passing guests. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included as well as cleaning of the house at the end of your stay. The caretaker can do your laundry if required (fee not included). Other: The upper floor has one large bedroom (double bed) and a smaller bedroom with two single beds. Central heating and floor heating for cold times. Two doors open to large terraces overlooking the valley. Jaccuzzi next to the middle terrace. Unfortunately the jacuzzi cannot be used in the dry season to minimize the use of water.

The main beach at Salobrena is about 1 hour away. The Costa del Sol is a fairly well developed stretch of coastline, but there are also a number of less well known bays along protected stretches of coast.


Granada is the closest airport at 1 hour 30 minutes drive and is served by Ryanair (from Stansted and Liverpool) and by Monarch (from Gatwick). Malaga is served by most other airlines and is about 2hrs and 10 minutes by car. You can reach us via public transport, but car hire is highly recommended and very easy to arrange. We will be happy to advice you.


Orgiva is the closest town of any significant size and is about 40 mins away. Pitres is within walking distance and has shops, a bank, bars,restaurants and 24/7 medical centre. Local villages Mecina and Portugos and Busquistar have more restaurants. The city of Granada with the world famous Alhmbra Palace is one hour and fifteen minutes by car. The Sierra Nevada ski slopes are roughly 2 hours away. Everything else to enjoy your holiday is on the doorstep, visit the famous white villages in the Poqeira valley (10 min)

The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from challenging high level snow line walks to casual meanderings around the valley. Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and there are still many signs of their occupation. Most notably the syle of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.

Many people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content to simply relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, paragliding, cannoning, guided walks, cycling, mountain biking, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around, including vegetarian establishments. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there's no need to leave!

Booking Notes:
The rent is inclusive of linen, towels, gas, water, final cleaning and WiFi internet. Further details can be found on our personal website. After the first payment has been received a proof of payment is sent to the renter, together with a description of the route and the location of the meeting place, the arrival and departure date and the name and mobile telephone number of the caretaker, who will deliver the keys and show you around in the Cortijo.

We presently offer our guests the opportunity to travel outside the weekends, i.e. the changeover day is flexible. So far this has worked fine, our guests appreciate this option

Notes on prices:
Prices shown are per week in Euros. A discount is given for longer periods outside the main season. See our personal website.
The rent includes everything: bed linen, towels, final cleaning, electricity (solar panels and a silenced backup generator), water (from our own spring ) gas, WiFi internet. Free firewood when available, extra supplies will be charged.
During your stay the annex will not be rented to others, so you have complete privacy.
