Beautiful Venetian villa with pool & lovely views in a quiet hillside village
Described by Conde Naste Traveller as very well priced with romantic, unpretentious decor with cypress-wood floors and pal ochre walls.
Villa Alexina is a 400- year- old Venetian-style manor house on the outskirts of Neo Perithia, just a 10 minute drive from Kassiopi and few minutes from Gerald Durrell’s favourite beach of the white lilies, St Spyridon. It is a good base for some of the prettiest walks on Corfu and it’s spacious lounge with a romantic fire place, makes it a good for off season holidays.
Villa Alexina offers three large bedrooms (one able to provide four single beds for family groups), one en-suite leading to an enormous veranda with panoramic views; 2 twin bedded rooms (one without a balcony for child safety) they share a roomy bathroom with both bath and shower.
Only twelve manor houses were built on Corfu in the same style and boasts the same Maltese cut stone favoured by the masons who built the Palace of St Michael and St John in Corfu Town. The owners have strived to marry the original character of the house with the demands for modern living.
Villa Alexina is located on the edge of a peaceful traditional village, looking over Greek neighbours who love to greet visitors and often make gifts of olive oil, eggs or lemons. The village of Agios Illias is a five minute walk down past olive groves and the Church of St Spyridon with the fragrance of jasmine and flourishing gardens into the village of Neo Perithia, where there are two excellent Tavernas serving local cuisine, both very friendly and reasonably priced.
The swimming pool was designed by the architect to include a small pool where young children can gain confidence and enjoy the water with their feet firmly on the ground and no risk of falling into the larger pool. By night, soft lighting is provided by Moroccan lights within the arches, where you can sit and enjoy a drink whilst listening to the scops owl calling or watching the birds swoop in for a drink. Another design feature of the pool is that there are two sets of lockable safety gates, enabling parents to rest assured that once locked their children cannot get beyond the safety of the top terraces.
Villa Alexina’s kitchen opens up onto a magnificent original stone terrace, shaded by vines and grapes in the summer months. Here a large wooden table provides a dining room for you to sit, relax and eat a meal confronted on what must be one of the most unspoiled views on the island.
The view from Villa Alexina looks down over the olive groves and Church to the sea and distant mountains. It remains one the few views which is not interrupted by unsightly resorts or building works. The colours of sunset change every night culminating with the sun setting into the sparkling sea and bathing the Albanian coastline in a spectrum of colour, with silhouettes of the mountains.
Gerald Durrell’s widow Lee, is a frequent visitor to Villa Alexina and says she can so easily imagine Gerry and Larry Durrell sitting here for hours with a glass of wine or ouzo, inspired by the view. Many of the visitors to Villa Alexina are indeed writers and return again and again.
Although we could not resist the charm of this abandoned manor house over twenty years ago, which has taken years of love and labour to restore to it’s former glory; one of the unexpected bonuses is the charm of it’s location. Nestled on the outskirts of such a friendly village, removes visitors from the noise of tourism found in the busy resorts. As the village is served by pick ups laden with local vegetable growers, fish and even organic wine, it is possible to survive without battling in large supermarkets of Kassiopi or Acharavi.
A generous BBQ with a spit roast is adjacent to the top veranda, for those who prefer to cook their own supper whilst enjoying the view and peace and privacy of not being overlooked. Alistair Sawday listed the kitchen in the villa as one of the best equipped for any cook. The villa owner works as a cook, so you will often be lucky enough to receive fresh vegetables or salad from their kitchen garden and there is always a good supply of fresh herbs outside the kitchen door. It is possible to book the cook service for the duration or for that special occasion; although early booking is essential.
Naturally, the villa itself is fully equipped with internet WIFI throughout, Miele washing machine, dishwasher, food processor, flat screen TV, music station, air conditioned bed rooms, ceiling fans and an extensive library of books.
Last but by no means least, Villa Alexina has been chosen for the past five years as the location to host Gerald Durrell's Corfu - see
About the Owner
David and Alex gave up farming in Cornwall and bought this property twenty years ago and often refer to it as 'the Forth Bridge' as improvements and renovating is never ending.
They helped found The Durrell School of Corfu and were both Directors, heavily involved in the running of seminars and programmes run by the school. David was the Director of Ecology and has much expertise on local wildlife, landscape and environmental history. They are now in partnership with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and run ecology weeks in the Spring see www.geralddurrellscorfu.org.
Because of the unique and apt character of Villa Alexina it has featured in many of their activities and books written by vistitors.
Guestbook comments from the owner
We had read reviews of Villa Alexina and were concerned that it could not match the superlatives written. Believe me, they did not lie or exaggerate! It is a most delightful property, full of olde-worlde charm and in the most magnificent location. It is set back about one and a half miles from the rather commercialised coastline, surrounded by what can best be described as an 'olive plantation'. The village, with an excellent shop and taverna is about a 10 minute walk away - maybe 15 minutes back uphill after a carafe of the excellent local wine. The villa itself is on three levels with two wonderful patios, one vine covered, and a lovely child-safe pool. The flights of steps between levels give the villa an authentic old Greek appearance. The views towards the sea and to Albania across the channel, and then across the valley to the hills, are stunning. Inside, the house is very comfortable and extremely well-equipped. The owners seem to have thought of everything that visitors might need. They even stocked the fridge so that there was no need to rush out for provisions on arrival.
Many thanks for a wonderful visit and I am glad to add to the superlatives!

“Perfect location, perfect accommodation, perfect hosts!”
What can I say - absolutely idyllic accommodation set in the hills and olive groves, and a short drive to the beach. The terrace is the perfect place to while away the hours over breakfast, lunch and dinner, enjoy a drink and watch the sunset over the sea. The pool is fantastic for a quick dip to cool down and a spot of sun worshipping. The villa itself is gorgeous and Alex and David are absolutely perfect and gracious hosts, always on hand with advice on where to eat, which beaches to visit etc. as well as providing a bountiful supply of fresh produce from their own garden and delicious homemade wine! And they have thought of everything from a well-stocked fridge and welcome pack to pool toys, to UK sockets and beach towels.
We visited as two families with two active one-year-olds who had a fantastic time chasing the cats and the resident tortoises around the terrace.
Completely recommend and hope to be back our selves sometime.

Where do we begin! The welcome pack included a lovely chicken, which the boys polished off in no time. We loved the villa - Harry enjoyed talking to the cats, watching lizards, feeding the tortoises, running to the wall to see what was coming up the road and especially the little pool. Thanks for all the advice on beaches and places to go. We wanted somewhere to just "be" as a family and just potter about and play with Harry in a beautiful location - we are so happy we found it 10/10. All the village shopkeepers were so welcoming and kind too. We could go on for hours about this holiday and will probably do so when we get home.

Mmmmmmm - 10th or 11th time here!
From the Owner
“I was looking for a challenge to redirect my energies when leaving the lifestyle of farming. As a Gerald Durrell fan since childhood, I fell in love with this beautiful property. This is such a wonderful village, with lovely Greek neighbours whose warmth and support has helped me in this enormous task. Although away from the madding crowd of tourism, it is very easy to access local towns, mountains and the airport.”

Many beautiful beaches are within a few minutes from the villa, the closest being St Spyridon. A short drive takes you to Kalamaki, perfect for young children, and a little further along the beautiful coast takes you to Almiros, Saint Stephanos, Kalami, Kaloura and Kerasia. Many guests find it takes them a few days to leave the Villa after relaxing so much but venturing out offers fantastic places to enjoy lunch, swim in the gloriously warm Mediterranean sea and watch the world go by.
Corfu airport is one hour's drive from the villa and has frequent charter flights from the UK and scheduled flights four times a day from Athens.
Daily ferries arrive from mainland Greece and ports in Italy with budget airlines (Brindisi/Venice/Ancona).

Villa Alexina is famous for hosting The Durrell School of Corfu's activity week, www.durrellschoolofcorfu.wordpress.com. This week is led by Dr David Bellamy and widow of Gerald Durrell, Lee both of whom are frequent visitors to the villa. As Lee Durrell herself has said, Villa Alexina encapsulates the atmosphere of My Family and Other Animals, and can visualise both Gerald and Lawrence sitting on the terrace, sampling the home produced wine! As Directors of the DSC, the owners of this villa are happy to organise a day in which you can experience Gerald Durrell's Corfu.
The village has two well stocked shops, there are supermarkets in both Kassiopi and Acharavi - where you can also find banks, money exchanges and ATMs. There are many excellent fish restaurants and meat tavernas close by, including one in walking distance from the villa.
