About the Owner

As a family we have had a long connection with Menorca. One of the owners relations, Francisco Preto y Neto, was representative for the Balearic Islands in the Cortes in Madrid in 1823. His father had been British Consul during the British occupation and so he was in favour of democracy. These views meant that he had to flee for his life from the Spanish King by escaping to America where he married an American lady, Mary Griffiths. Subsequently he was appointed Spanish ambassador to Mexico in 1838. His portrait is in the Ayuntamento in Mahon and his wife is the only women buried in the American naval cemetery on the North side of Mahon harbour. In 1972 we bought the old farm house so our family, grandchildren and friends can continue to enjoy the beauty and history of Menorca.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Yes, we loved everything about our holiday in Menorca - all we could have needed in the house, the lovely garden and pool area, we enjoyed it all so much.

It was our first visit to the island and we hope to return again one day."

Josephine

"Just a quick email to say we love the house! It more than exceeded our expectations. It's very welcoming, and helped us to quickly relax and settle into a holiday routine. And we're having a delightful time slowly exploring the vicinity.

My parents - keen gardeners - enjoyed the garden."

Nick

"I wanted to drop you a quick line to say how much we enjoyed our stay in your farmhouse in Menorca. The house, garden & pool area are lovely & as my wife, in particular, has always wanted to stay in, or near to S'Ullastrar, in a traditional Menorcan property it was the ideal location for us."

Lovely old farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to Casa Cristina and we found it just as delightful as before with the added advantage of a third bedroom and air conditioning in all bedrooms.

The garden and the pool were as lovely as ever. We were treated to the sight of a beautiful swallowtail butterly settling on the flowers by the house together with an intriguing hummingbird moth. The gekkos kept us entertained as we ate our evening meal on the covered terrace and we think we heard (but didn't see) the tortoise munching its way through the fennel plants on the other side of the stone wall. The local shop was brilliant as usual and there are 3 recommended restaurants within walking distance so if you didn't want to travel anywhere else on the island you could exist here perfectly happily without using a car. We did venture further afield as we wanted to visit Ciutadella and Mahon plus Playa Tortuga, our favourite beach on the north coast, which is reached by a 20 minute walk through the nature reserve. We also revisited a restaurant, now renamed Biosphera, in Na Macaret where we had an excellent and imaginative meal. If you want to barbecue some fish there is a good fish shop in San Lluis - the tuna is particularly delicious.

The house itself is full of character and perfect for anyone who doesn't want to stay in a modern box. The stone stairs up to the main bedroom are quite steep so you need to watch your step but once you are up there you are rewarded with a roof terrace with views over to Torret and the coast. A perfect place to enjoy a gin and tonic made with the excellent Mahon gin.

Location

From the Owner

We were intrigued by the house's history in that it was one of 2 semi detached houses built for Menorcans by the British so that they could grow vegetables and rear pigs for the British fleet. There is still the old pig sty and well in the garden. It provides an ideal location to have a Mediterranean garden, a quiet rural setting for holidays, near to shops and at the same time a house with old Menorcan charm rather than living in a modern resort full of modern boxes. With a car you can choose which beach to go to either 10 or 40 minutes away according to the direction of the wind or whether you want to be all day on the beach with a picnic or just a bathe and come home. We were fortunate to have a good local architect to modernise the house inside yet still to retain its farm house charm.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

We are roughly ten minutes, l2 minutes and l5 mins from the nearest beaches by car. For bathing off the rocks in a delightful circular bay it is l0 mins by car and there are good small beaches another five mins on either side. One has a restaurant and both are good for children. If you want to take a picnic or go further afield there are wonderful beaches 50 mins away on the North side of the island which are unspoilt as these are rural areas where no development is allowed.

Travel:

The international airport of Mahon is only 20 minutes away from the farm house and can be reached by taxi easily on arrival or you can pick up your hire car from Mahon airport. However car hire is essential, unless you plan to spend your entire holiday around the house's pool and garden, walking locally and shopping in the excellent supermarket (5 mins walk).

There are several local restaurants in easy walking distance.

Distances:

Sant Lluis is the nearest town with plenty of restaurants, shops, bank, cash points etc. 5 mins in the car.

Mahon is only l5 mins away and is a fascinating medieval port built round the finest harbour in the Mediterranean. Monte Toro is the highest hill on the island about 40 mins drive along a scenic route to the monastery from which you can see all over the island and across to Majorca. The Arab town of Cuidadela at Western end of the island is an hour 20 minutes away by car.

Further Details:

Supermarket: The local family run supermarket is only 5 mins walk and is quite excellent - freshly baked bread, wonderful meat and all you could want. For fresh fish apart from the fish market in Mahon or the Eroski Supermarket near Sant Lluis

History: Mahon, with its connection with Nelson, the British fleet during the Napoleonic war also the French and USA fleets, provides many fascinating walks, museums and ancient buildings that recall by gone times along with Fort Marlborough still guarding the entrance to the harbour.

Boating: Port Mahon is a great centre for yachts and power boats of all sizes which can be hired or from where day trips can be taken. Kayaks, sailing catamarans, pedalo's can be hired from the beach at Es Grau about 20 minutes away.

Fornells on the North Coast is a cnetre for Wind Surfing, hiring of small motor boats etc. on the large sheltered inlet from the sea.

Archaeology: Menorca is famous for its Taula's its pre historic stone age monuments. These can be seen all over the island great standing stones and stone burrial places. There is also a Roman site and museum on Cape Cavalleria.

Scuba diving/Snorkeling The clear warm Mediterranean water, the volcanic formation of Menorca's rocky coastline and numerous types of fish make the island ideal for underwater exploration. There is a first diving centre at S'Algar (15 mins away)run by a UK family providing instruction (PADI) hire fascilities along with para ascending.

Walking: There are many little inlets with sandy beaches which are accesible only by walking or by sea. Also there some Nature Reserves in which there are marked paths giving access to remote parts.

Birds and wild flowers. There are interesting wild flowers and birds to be seen - hoopoe, bee eaters, black vulture etc. in the Nature Reserves at Es Grau, on the island of Es Colomb and on the North Coast at Bini Mela.

More details of all these can be had on application.

Facilities

From the Owner

With the garden and the pool area with its shaded pergola, you can live out of doors eating either on the patio under the awning near the house and barbcue or down by the pool. Both areas are surrounded by flowers and shrubs, particularly jasmin, bourgainvilla, lantana etc. which attract all kinds of butterflies - even swallow tails. This makes an ideal stting for a family holiday which is child friendly as we have 9 grand children who love Menorca as do their parents and grandparents.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: We now have air-conditioning in all of the three bedrooms. We have had many families with children including our own grandchildren in our house over the years. The pool area is surrounded on all four sides by a dry stone wall and a door with a latch to make it safe for children under adult supervision. Outside: We have a well stocked garden with many different shrubs and fruit trees. There is a separate barbecue built into the side of the house near the patio. The private pool is in a walled area half way down the garden, with plenty of room on all sides for sun bathing or lying in the shade on reclining chairs. It is 8 x 5 meters with a shallow and deep end. It is kept immaculately clean and, with the eating area, can be flood lit at night. There is a door that can be shut with a latch to keep small children out of the pool area. Utility Room: Has a washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen (not swimming towels) are included and the property is cleaned every Friday by local English cleaners. Linen changed weekly on Fridays
