Farmhouse in Munxar, Gozo, Malta - Quiet Village Location In An Elevated Position

A character, traditional 19th century farmhouse, converted and fully refurbished some years ago to a very high standard, featuring free air-conditioning to 3 bedrooms and free wireless internet. Approached from an alley, one enters via double doors to a private courtyard. Rear south facing sun deck with private fenced and gated swimming pool. Roof terrace with splendid valley views ideal for watching the setting sun with that evening drink!

Prior to conversion in 1999, Santa Maria was just a collection of small sheep sheds overlooking a ravine.

Following conversion and extension, we now have a cosy yet spacious farmhouse with country views.

The small island of Gozo is not considered to be a main stream tourist destination and therefore offers a truly wonderful relaxing holiday living amongst local Gozitans who go about their daily lives. Gozitans are a really friendly bunch always pleased to help foreigners and always interested in where you live and how you spend your time at home.

Over 15 years ago, Chris & Doreen Lye from Surrey UK, fell in love with this little unspoilt island situated off the NW coast of Malta.

Having purchased and renovated their own farmhouse Santa Maria in Munxar, they are now pleased to bring you a small selection of British owned farmhouses and villas, ideal for that relaxing holiday.

Why Chris & Doreen Lye chose Island of Gozo

Prior to conversion in 1999, Santa Maria was just a collection of small sheep sheds overlooking a ravine.

Following conversion and extension, we now have a cosy yet spacious farmhouse with country views

What makes this farmhouse unique

Munxar is not a village frequented by tourists, so when staying at Santa Maria you feel as though you are part of the local community.

The surrounding neighbours are mainly sheep and chickens!

Notes on accommodation: Farmhouse Santa Maria includes emergency lighting, wall safe and additional safety equipment. All rooms have ceiling fans, and bedrooms have air conditioning. The property is British owned. There is a folding cot, cot linen, highchair and child gate included. Outside: The rear garden is walled, secluded and South facing. Fenced and gated private swimming pool 6 x 2.5 metres, pergola, sun loungers, patio table and 6 chairs and parasol. Quality gas BBQ. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen included together with beach towels. Linen is changed weekly. Maid service on departure, additional maid service is also available.

Magnificant Munxar

Santa Maria was all that it was advertised as. We have stayed at many places over the years and not had such detailed welcoming information let alone the warm embrace of the home, we felt an immediate sense of relaxation.

The bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable, good showers and a good workable kitchen already nicely stocked with spices let alone the welcome food package which was greatly appreciated as our flights were delayed so much so that we didn't arrive until well after midnight. Outside the private courtyard was well appointed, BBQ, lounge chairs, cats and we ate out quite a bit under the little shelter. As Canadians we even used the pool; very refreshing.

This is the first time that we really couldn't fault anything but if you want something so that it isn't perfect we had trouble learning the location of the light switches but that just added to the charm.

The local area, walks and people were also quite wonderful.

Lovely house and pool, very well equipped for a relaxing villa holiday

We visited in October - perfect weather for our one year old plus 6 adults. The villa is exceptionally well equipped and our son was particularly pleased with all the toys at his disposal; the adults enjoyed a refreshing dip in the pool. Gozo is a great location for an easy and relaxing holiday as everything is so close, and it's hard to fault Santa Maria as a place to base yourself. Thanks Chris and Doreen!

Lovely famhouse in peaceful Gozo

Beautifully converted and extended farmhouse with fab pool and balconies. Couldn't have asked for any more. Car is definitely a must although everything in easy reach. Nearby Xlendi Bay was a popular spot for us to swim and eat. Loved Victoria the Capital. All in all a wonderful stay. Thank you :-)

Perfect getaway!

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week at Santa Maria, so much so we are heading back next year. Peaceful neighbourhood, ideally positioned for exploring the island and with everything you could need close by. The welcome pack provided was indeed welcome, having plenty to get us through to the morning following a late evening arrival. The owners provide a useful information pack and directions, although do be aware that Gozitan road signage isn't great, so keep your eyes peeled or you will encounter an impromptu island tour!

Hähne und Hundegebell

Als Nachbarn gab es auf der einen Seite mehrere Hähne, die Nachts stundenlang gekräht haben und auf der anderen Seite Hundegebell ohne Ende. Wir konnten die Nächte kaum schlafen und waren froh, nach 1 Woche wieder abreisen zu können.

Warmes Wasser zum Duschen funktionierte nicht in jedem Bad.

Owner's Response: Dear Lars Thank you for your comments, we are sorry that you found the chickens a problem at night and we were not aware of a dog barking close by. We did stay there ourselves for a couple of weeks just after you left. The water heaters for all bathrooms are working correctly but need turning on, as explained in the Farmhouse Notes. Unfortunately we cannot do anything about the neighbour's chickens, but it is a farmhouse and there are also sheep next door. None of them bother us I am glad to say. Regards Chris

Special interest holidays:

Gozo is the perfect place for walking and cycling holidays out of main season.

The clear seas are excellent for swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving with many PADI qualified dive schools located on the island.

Gozo has many historical sites including temples that pre-date the Egyptian Pyramids.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach is at Xlendi, about a 20 minutes walk away. Santa Maria is situated equidistant between Victoria the (island's capital) and Xlendi fishing village with a small beach. Other beaches, both sandy and shingle, plus hide away coves are also within a 15 minutes drive. Well stocked supermarket within a 5 mins. walk

Travel:

Travel to Malta airport, then cross to Gozo by ferry (25 mins). Santa Maria is approx 35km from Malta airport.

Distances:

The island of Gozo is made up of 17 individual villages contained in an area 11 x 7 kms in total.

Car hire is recommended.

Further Details:

Maltese cuisine is Italian based, of high quality and reasonably priced. Maltese wines and beers are also of high quality and excellent value.

The island of Gozo is predominantly a farming community and during the summer months, when the weather is hot, farm workers leave for the fields just after dawn, to avoid the heat of the day.

This also means that you may well be woken by farmyard animals, such as chickens, sheep, cows and dogs as the village comes to life.
