Secluded designer holiday villa with magnificent views, overlooking the Marina at Praia da Rocha and the castle across the river. Madrigal offers complete privacy with its own pool, and jacuzzi yet is within walking distance to the beach and the exciting seaside resort of Praia da Rocha, making it ideal for families with teenagers or groups of friends on holiday wishing to sample the local night-life as well as enjoy the sea and sun without need to hire a car. The wide, mile-long Atlantic beach is only 100 yards away where aside from swimming there is water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing and pedalos, tennis courts, beach sports and many beach bars and restaurants. Along the clifftop esplanade are shops, supermarkets, cafes, cinema, casino, bowling alley, bars, discos, restaurants and much, much more. Below the villa at the Marina, you can take a boat excursion or a dolphin safari. So much to do, and yet complete privacy when you need peace and quiet.

The villa can also be rented in mid or low season for up to 6 persons by closing the Garden Suite, please ask for rates

Madrigal is a stand-alone, completely detached villa in its own grounds. The house is on three floors. The ground floor street level comprises the hall, kitchen, sitting room, conservatory, swimming pool & jacuzzi, verandas and barbecue; plus the carport. The upper story has three bedrooms. The master has an en-suite bathroom. The two other bedrooms; a double and a twin share a bathroom. The circular sun terrace is on this upper floor. The Garden Suite, which sleeps 1-4 adults, is on the lower floor with vistas of the Marina and the harbour and only let in conjunction with the main house. The Garden Suite has its own sitting room, two bedrooms; a double and a twin sharing a bathroom, and its own veranda. There is an outside staircase and a connecting staircase indoors which can be closed off when not let with the main house.

Beautiful 180º Views of marina and harbour. Easy access to beach. Carport. Utility Room: Maids separate utility room with washing mashines and tumble dryer. Separate washing machine, ironing board and iron on ground floor for guest use. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bath towels, bed linen, kitchen towels and coloured pool towels included and changed weekly. Maid service daily except Sundays and Public Holidays. Other: Conservatory with plants, seating and views of Marina, estuary and harbour.

Flawless ,This place is a must for future holidays

So i need to break this review in two as i feel the need to go through the booking experience. As soon as i got my first reply from Barbara i knew this would be a great experience. She was so accommodating and very responsive and really went above and beyond with some of my enquiries. It really gave me a great feeling from the start.

On to our stay - myself and my family (two adults and two kids) were staying close by in my mothers house for a few days prior to our stay in El Madrigal. On our arrival we were simply blown away by the space, the views, the kitchen, the bedrooms.....i mean i could go on and on. You get such a homely feeling as soon as you walk through the doors and this is just a credit to Barbara. Not once did i feel i was staying in a rented villa and i am sure anyone who has stayed before me would agree. It just had everything we could possibly need and in a fabulous location. Short walk to a fabulous beach, gorgeous restaurants etc. Having been to Portugal so many times before, having experienced El Madrigal it is the only way to holiday. Cant wait to return next year !!!!

Lovely private villa

Our party of 7 with ages ranging from 19 to 81 had a great time at Madrigal. The villa was very clean with lots of amenities provided. It was spacious with lots of places for the older ones to get a bit of piece and quiet for reading etc if required.. It was very easy to get to the centre and to the beaches.. The local restaurants were very good but we had a few BBQs at the villa as the weather was really good.. Would definately recommend this villa

A superb villa

Our party of 9 , a mixed group of 50+ers, arrived at lunchtime after an early flight and were met by the maid who showed us round the property. The villa was spotlessly clean and it wasn't easy to choose our bedrooms as all 5 were different and had unique features. The layout of the villa is great, with shaded areas by the pool and a balcony with sun beds which gets the afternoon sun. We used the barbecue twice and it was nice to sit in or out depending on the temperature. The kitchen was well kitted out with ample plates , glasses and cutlery. The villa is in a quiet area of Praia da rocha. The beach is only a 5 minute walk, so is no solo Agua beach club for those who like a large pool and solid wood loungers. The pool at the villa is really a dipping pool and wouldn't be suitable for young children. Faro airport is 45 minute drive away. We used a lidl supermarket nearby for general shopping , essentials such as beer and wine!!!. It is virtually impossible to have a bad meal in Praia, from 3 courses for less than 10 euros to romantic meals overlooking the sea as the sunsets. We would , however, recommend titanic and restaurant F , both were excellent. All our party had a fantastic holiday and would recommend this villa . With 5 bedrooms it is such value for money. Great location

Booked this Villa for a week for 10 family and a 9 month old baby.

Here's some at a glance points which i hope prove useful:

* Great location overlooking the Marina with nice breeze when temperatures hit 35 as they did during our stay in June. A short stroll down the hill toward cafes/ice cream parlour (lovely) and about 10 min walk into the main night life. Plenty of local mini markets too.

*Rooms are lovely and spacious, a couple were four poster style I think and the master room has a very spacious en suite.

*Beach is lovely and golden - could get quite windy at times which could be good and bad! A really good boardwalk all along the beach too with bars and restaurants along it at reasonable prices. Makes pushing a pushchair along the beach that much easier!

*Villa is set over 3 floors which when you're are in a big mixed group and sometimes some need a little 'space' this can be useful. Stair down to the lower 2 bedrooms are quite steep!

*Villa has a car port which is useful as on road parking is quite full.

*The pool is not for lengths, its more a dipping pool which could accommodate maybe 4 people reasonably at a time. If you want a pool that could take all 10 guests plus lilo's etc this isn't it. It's better if you have a mixed group of ages as we did who often did their own thing rather than all together, all the time. The pool area is quite shaded also, however there is a circular sun lounging terrace on the top floor with circa 4 sun loungers.

*Kitchen was fully kitted and modern for cooking and there is a small chimney BBQ outside which with grilled sardines on which we'd caught on a kayak trip.

*Communication with Barbara when booking the Villa was clear and swift which makes you feel at ease when booking a Villa on-line as I did for the first time!

Overall a lovely Villa, a rarity in the area as most accommodation in the area is apartments and tall rise flats all making the most of the great beach, sea and amenities. Thanks BJ!

Oh how WE ALL miss this place!

In our third year of vacationing in Portugal, we stayed in this magical magical house. While secluded and beautiful, it's a stones throw away from one of the funnest beach fronts in the Algarve--a sort of "best of both worlds" scenario for all ages (we were 6 people from Los Angeles and Portugal... aged 7 to 76). WE ALL LOVED THIS PLACE.

The photos are not exaggerated; the location is ideal, and it's simply a most memorable home for the vacationer. The owner BJ is most accommodating, with a brilliant sense of humor and utmost professionalism.

Full disclosure we stayed here in 2013, 2 of us traveling from the United States and meeting my husband's family in Portugal. Last year (though we simply adored this home) I--the American--decided we need to 'explore' all that Algarve has to offer and booked a different home in a very remote village.

Within 24 hours of arriving in that village and thoroughly disappointed, I emailed BJ asking if the house was available. It was not...We were quite saddened and even ventured back to Praia da Rocha to enjoy the beautiful ocean front and on the desire of the children, even drove by this home to reminisce of our lovely stay.

About Barbara Jane Boulter

BJ is from Africa. In 1961 after independence in Tanganyika, the family with 7 children sailed across the seas to a new, hardly less wild environment in the Algarve, on the coast at Praia da Rocha. They bought an inn, the Solar Penguin and started life anew. Barbara Jane (BJ) pursued an artistic career, working in film as designer. Film took her all over the world. Portugal is once again her home. It has changed a lot since 1962, tourism and EEC membership have brought it swiftly into the 21st century and has become a comfortable as well as friendly place to live and to holiday. BJ also travels regularly to Tanzania making films. This gives her opportunity to be where she is happiest, on safari photographing the African wilderness or in Portugal. Welcome to her home, Algarve.

The wide, mile-long Atlantic beach is only 100 yards away where there is a boardwalk along the beach which is lit at night, giving access to many beach bars and restaurants, water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, pedalos, tennis courts and beach sports. The boardwalk can be accessed by the Marina without using steps.


Faro airport 45 minutes drive. Car not essential, everything you really need is within walking distance. There is a local bus service to town every 15 mins, it stops near the villa.


Praia da Rocha has all the shops you will need on holiday, and Portimão, which is a midsize commercial town with hypermarkets and retail parks, is only 2km away. There are excursions available within walking distance to take you the waterslide park (7km away) off-road safaris, and other places of interest.
