Stone House with Terraces and Sea Views

Overview

Property

Updated: 20-Oct-2016
Stone House in Funtana, Nr. Porec, Istria - Coastal Location in Village with Marina, 500m Minutes Walk to the Beach

The house is an old Istrian stone house situated in the small fishing village of Funtana near Porec. Located right in the centre of the old part of the village, the house was sympathetically renovated in 2004 with the addition of a first floor terrace and the conversion of the attic space to a second bedroom with a roof terrace providing stunning views. Air-conditioning was added throughout the house in 2010. The house is fully furnished and well equipped. The village has a couple of mini-markets for basic groceries, a daily fresh produce market, restaurants, cashpoint, Post Office and its own Tourist Office.

About the Owner

I am 50 and live in London with my wife and two cats! We first came to Croatia in 2002 and in 2004 I spent six months here, getting to know the country and learning the language. As a consequence, we decided to buy a small house in a fishing village called Funtana on the west coast of Istria, where we have since spent many a happy summer. At the same time as buying the house in Funtana, we also decided to embark on a more ambitious project and purchased a derelict farmhouse in the countryside in a small hamlet called Baredine ...

Lovely Stay

Lovely accommodation in a very quaint and traditional town. Close to some handy shops, great restaurants (good value and plenty of great food), and a short walk from the sea. Recommended.

Super Place, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our holiday at Funtana.

Super accommodation, very spacious, very tidy, lots of room for our boys to run up and down the stairs.

Little old lady nearby made us pancakes one day - which was really sweet.

The local restaurants in the road at the back of the house are excellent, with mainly German clientele. Very reasonably priced too.

A decent beach is a short walk away - and the little town bay had a good fish event when we stayed.

All good - recommend it.

Location

From the Owner

We find our holidays in Funtana are always extremely relaxing, spending the days reading and swimming at the local beach, cycling or walking in the vicinity or taking short drives to visit neighbouring towns and villages.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Pula at 70 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Funtana at 500 Metres Nearest Ferry : Porec at 8 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Istarski Ypsilon at 20 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Funtana at 25 Metres Nearest Ski : Slovenia at 150 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Funtana at 500 Metres Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

The house is about a 500m walk to the nearest public beach. There is plenty of tree shade and the beach is paved with a cordoned-off swimming area (note the beach is not sandy; this is typical of the Istrian coastline). There are freshwater showers and nearby cafes selling drinks and snacks. The water is warm enough for swimming from the beginning of May through to mid-October. The waters of the Adriatic are particularly clean and clear.

Travel:

Istria is easily accessible by air with cheap flights provided by Ryanair and Easyjet and, more recently, Jet2. Ryanair and Jet2 fly to Pula (ca. 45 mins drive away), Ryanair also flies to Trieste and Rijeka (both airports ca. 2 hours’ drive away) and Easyjet to Ljubljiana in Slovenia (ca. 2 hours’ drive away). There are frequent local buses (every hour in season), although a car would be useful for making trips further afield.

Distances:

It is about 7km to Porec (famous for its Euphrasian Basilica) from the house and about 30km to Rovinj. From either of these towns it is about a 2.5 hour catamaran trip to Venice (offered daily during the summer season). The picturesque hill towns of Motovun and Groznjan are about 40km away.

Further Details:

There is a small mini-market selling groceries immediately behind the house and a daily market selling fruit/veg, bread and fish. There are a number of good quality restaurants in the village, a couple of cafe-bars, an ice-cream parlour and local wine-sellers. We have provided a lot more information about local amenities in the house and the Tourist Office in the village is also a good point of reference - they speak fluent English.

Facilities

From the Owner

Funtana boasts a number of extremely good restaurants, all within easy walking distance of the house, although we also enjoy buying local produce from the nearby markets in Porec and having an alfresco meal on the patio or upstairs on the terrace looking out to sea. In the summer months the Tourist Office organises a number of events in the village, including weekly concerts and monthly fisherman's festivals ... not to be missed!
