Villa in Claviers, Nr. Bargemon, Provence - Set In An Olive Grove With Glorious Views

Bastidon des Oliviers is a large, split level property comprising a luxurious three bedroom villa with an independent two bedroom apartment on the lower level. Both dwellings are fully self-contained with private terrace space and separate entrances so both offer complete privacy to our guests. The large pool and terrace area around it are shared. For combined lets, the villa and apartment can inter-connect and are ideal for both families or groups of friends. The villa and apartment can be let separately except in peak season (mid July to end August) when we only let the entire property for up to 10 people.

The property is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, less than ten minutes walk from the splendid hilltop village of Claviers, near Bargemon (voted “one of the most beautiful villages in France”). Looking in one direction you can see the village of Claviers and in the other, Bargemon. Our land is totally private with no overlooking houses and a quiet path leads from it to the village. Claviers is a lovely quiet village, virtually unchanged from it's medieval past and yet has all the conveniences you may require and a choice of bars and restaurants. Bargemon is a much larger village with a beautiful shaded square with numerous shops, bars and restaurants.

Bastidon des Oliviers is set amongst terraced olive groves in over an acre of land on a hillside with a spectacular infinity pool, enjoying glorious views over the surrounding countryside. A fabulous secluded location, yet within easy access of the Côte d’Azur resorts, which can be quickly reached via the A8 motorway (20 minutes away). It is a 45 minute drive to Cannes or to the Gorges du Verdon, 1 hour to Nice airport or St. Tropez, and 35 minutes to the beaches at St. Raphael and Fréjus.

Bastidon des Oliviers comprises a luxurious three bedroom villa with an independent two bedroom apartment on the lower level. Both have ground floor entrances as the property is split level and the apartment is located below and to one side of the villa.

The main villa comprises, on the ground floor, a large L-shaped living and dining room with French doors onto the terrace, a fully fitted oak kitchen, a spacious twin bedroom, very large bathroom with bath (with shower fitting) and washbasin, a separate shower room and an individual WC. On the first floor there is a good size double bedroom, another spacious twin bedroom and a washroom/WC. Most of the villa rooms have oak beamed ceilings.

The ground floor opens onto a very large terrace with glorious views over the countryside and the upstairs benefits from it's own covered terrace with a view to Claviers village.

The apartment comprises a spacious living room with a curtained off archway through to a twin bedroom, a separate double bedroom, a kitchen fitted with oak units and a shower room with washbasin and WC. The large utility room is shared with the villa occupants.

The property is fitted throughout to a high standard and fully equipped with modern appliances including wifi, satellite TV (French, English and other international channels), DVD, video, iPod dock and CD player.

The apartment is located on the ground floor of the property and has two bedrooms, one double with a pine bed, wardrobe, dressing table, chest of drawers and bedside cabinets and one twin (through a curtained off archway from the living room) with two pine beds, a wardrobe and bedside cabinet.

The light and spacious living room has French windows which open onto a private covered terrace with glorious views over the apartment garden and countryside. There is a dining table for six people, a sofa and an armchair for 4 people. Flat screen satellite TV with UK channels including BBC, video, DVD and hi-fi. Internet access is available through a wi-fi device.

The separate kitchen is fitted with oak units, with a microwave, hob, oven and grill and fridge/freezer. There is a spacious shower room with shower cubicle, large washbasin and WC. The very big utility room with a washing machine and ironing board is shared with the villa.

The apartment is entirely self contained.

About the Owner

We (Jill and Ray) bought Les Chenes (property Ref FR433) as our permanent residence in 1994. We have been renting the property out as a holiday home since 2002 when we moved into another house which we had built near Seillans. We bought property ref FR328 in 1998 with a view to renting it out as a rental home.

We live permanently near Seillans and actively manage our properties ourselves so they are always maintained to a high standard and we are on hand to solve any problems that may arise during the course of the rental season. When renting holiday homes for ourselves we have found that it can be a big advantage to have the owners on hand.

Ideal property in a wonderful location

We stayed in the 2 bed apartment which was stocked with everything you might need for a holiday. The apartment itself is ideal for a small family, and the exterior of the property (pool, parking etc.) is more than adequate for the stay in the apartment.

The family occupying the villa during our stay contained 4 members, and with our 3 members there was just enough room round the pool. I do worry that if there were more people occupying the property they wouldn't fit round the pool. However, the area is wonderful. The local village is beautiful with a few restaurants serving good food and the remainder of the local area is definitely worth investigating.

Beautiful location

We booked the apartment for a week mid may and had a lovely relaxing holiday in beautiful weather. The villa is situated just outside the quaint village of Claviers and well placed to explore the surrounding area.

The apartment was well equipped with everything required, including at least 12 different pots and pans! I kid you not!!

In all seriousness, a well maintained and clean apartment.

The only reason we scored 4/5 was that the day before we were due to leave we noticed a bit a smell in the apartment that we couldn't locate the source for.

Superb

We had a wonderful week here, upon arrival we were very impressed. The drive to the villa is quite windy up into the mountains. We arrived very late due to driving from Calais. The apartment was very homely and well equipped. And the bed was comfy (something very important) so we slept soundly all week. Very peaceful location with the sounds of nature which we love. My husband ( a doctor) and myself (a nurse) spent most of the week relaxing by the pool. We will definitely go back and for longer next time.

We can understand why you felt you were going up into the mountains having just driven from the UK, but we just wanted to add that, for people who may be thinking of visiting the Claviers area in the future, it is not actually in the mountains as such. Claviers is a hilltop village located at 2-400 metres depending on where you are and the main road leading from the motorway rises about 150 metres to get to us. It is a beautiful drive past vineyards and olive groves. Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back for a longer stay in the future.

Perfect holiday

Thoroughly recommended. We spent a perfect week at the apartment which was all we could have wished for and the pool etc. even better than the pictures. The setting is perfect with mountain views all round and we could have stayed by the pool all day. There are lots of places to visit both at the Mediterranean and in the Gorges de Verdon which are an incredible must-see. The owner was most helpful and left us with a folder full of useful information, one of the most comprehensive we have seen. We certainly hope to return one day.

Home and away

We had enough time on our hands between a rush of 3 weddings in 4 weeks to fit in a short week and what a good choice it was to spend our time charging our batteries here in this haven of tranquility. We had expected a temperature of 19 c for this time of year and got a totally unexpected minimum of 25 C most days and one of 34 C, so relaxing so comfortable we even had a swim in the infinity pool which was indeed adventurous of us. Ray and Jill were not too far away and it was also comforting to know that should we have a problem they were able to solve it readily.

A beautiful place to stay

A beautiful apartment in a wonderful setting. The accommodation and garden are very well maintained. The infinity pool is spectacular. We particularly liked the walk through the olives to the footpath into the village and collected our bread every morning. Lots of wonderful walks in the area. Owners very helpful. Wonderful to sit on the terrace with a glass of wine.

Clavier is a nice unspoilt village and the pizza restaurant is worth a visit.

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with the area as soon as we first explored it and bought our first house near Montauroux village in 1994 as the area is very beautiful, quieter than the coastal resorts and yet has easy access to the Cote d'Azur. It is just over half an hour's drive to the coast at St Raphael/Frejus. We bought Bastidon des Oliviers in 1998 with a view to renting it to holidaymakers. The main reason for our choice was the location of the villa within walking distance of the village of Claviers and the fabulous situation. The property is located in an acre and a half of terraced olive grove which has beautiful views over the surrounding hills and the villages of Claviers and Bargemon.

Coast/Beach:

The villa is also within easy access of the Cote d’Azur resorts. It is a 45 minute drive to Cannes, 1 hour to Nice airport or St. Tropez, and 35 minutes to St. Raphael and Frejus. The impressive coast road from La Napoule to St. Raphael is full of dramatic scenery backed by the red, craggy mountains of the Esterel National Park. It is here you will find our nearest coastal beaches (35-40 minutes drive) with a choice of sheltered coves or glorious long sandy bays.

Travel:

A car is essential. It is one hour to Nice airport, one hour to Toulon and just over one and a half hours to Marseille.

The high speed TGV train service departing from London Waterloo takes seven hours to reach Marseille, with one quick change in Lille. You can then carry on to a local station such as Les Arcs or Draguignan.

From Calais and the channel ports, it is about a 10 hour journey to the villa, best route being the motorway.

Distances:

Claviers is located in a beautiful area of The Var (the “département”), boasting some of the finest scenery Provence has to offer. There are numerous interesting nearby villages. Amongst the nearest are Bargemon (5 mins), Callas (10 mins), and Seillans (15 mins). For swimming, watersports or fishing, Lake St. Cassien is just a short drive away or you can visit the impressive Lac de St. Croix at the entrance to the Gorges du Verdon (1 hour). It is also easy to reach the coastal resorts (40 mins).

Further Details:

Claviers village (10 mins walk) offers four restaurants, a bar, small supermarket, baker and Post Office as well as a tourist office. There is free wi-fi in the tourist office and in the bar. In Bargemon there are numerous restaurants, two bars, three takeaways, two small supermarkets plus all the other local shops and amenities you would expect such as a bank and a pharmacy. There is a larger supermarket in Seillans (10-15 mins drive), as well as local markets in the villages. Within a 20 minute drive are several large supermarkets and numerous other shops.

Most outdoor activities are available locally including hiking, bike hire, climbing, swimming, fishing and watersports on the nearby lake, canyoning in the local gorges, white water rafting in the Gorges du Verdon, river fishing in local streams, gliding at the Fayence club, golf at Tourrettes de Fayence and St Endreol. There are also numerous cultural activities in the main coastal towns, the perfume factory tours in Grasse, as well as a host of children's amusements including waterparks, fairgrounds, zoos and so on.

Booking Notes:
Bastidon des Oliviers may be rented as two independent units or by one party wishing to occupy the whole property, with the exception of peak summer when we only accept bookings for the entire accommodation. The apartment is therefore not available as a separate let in the peak season.

We require a 20% (non-refundable) deposit to secure a booking. The balance is due 12 weeks before arrival. We also require a refundable damage deposit payable at least a week before arrival of £300 for the villa, £500 for the entire property or £200 for the apartment.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday in high season. Flexible out of season. Arrival from 3 pm at the apartment and 4 pm at the villa. Departure by 10 am.

Notes on prices:
Pricing is in UK Pounds per week, fully inclusive of gas, electricity, linen and cleaning. Prices are available from 2 to 6 people in the villa, from 2 to 4 people in the apartment and from 4 to 10 people in the entire property. The villa and apartment can be rented separately except in peak season when we only let the entire property together.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: All rooms have electric heaters for winter lets and there is also an open fire in the villa living room. Cooling fans and anti-mosquito devices are provided for the summer (though there aren't generally many mosquitoes being in the hills and away from water.) We provide sheets and continental quilts (and/or blankets) for all the beds, together with one bath towel and one hand towel per person. The linen is changed once a week and the accommodation will be thoroughly cleaned prior to arrival with a briefer weekly clean for bookings of two weeks or more. A cot and high chair are also available. The garden is maintained and the pool is cleaned twice weekly (more if necessary). We are on hand should any problems occur and we manage the property ourselves. Domestic pets are accepted at both properties, within reason and with our prior approval. In general we would accept up to 2 dogs in the entire property. The villa and apartment can be let separately except in peak season. Outside: The property is set in its own terraced olive grove in a peaceful location, offering splendid views from all points over the surrounding hills and the villages of Claviers and Bargemon. The villa and grounds are South facing and enjoy maximum day long sunshine throughout the year. A lovely silk tree provides natural shade for summer dining on the terrace in front of the villa, while apartment guests enjoy their own private covered patio. Both dining areas have gas barbecues and the poolside is fully equipped with garden furniture and parasols. The large overflow pool (11m x 4m), pool terrace and extensive private gardens are available for the enjoyment of all guests. There is an attractive balustrade at each side of the pool and the pool benefits from a child safety alarm. The main access path to the pool from the villa is also gated. A quiet road leads directly from the top of the grounds to Claviers village. It is about a 10 minute walk along a very quiet and pleasant road.
