About Martyn Nicholson

We live near the lake district and enjoy walking, climbing and the great outdoors. We also enjoy travelling and used to do home exchange when our children were young. Carole is retired and Martyn is MD of a house building company

Martyn Nicholson purchased this house in 2005

Why Martyn Nicholson chose Montejaque

We bought the house because we both like 'real' Spain, the 'great outdoors', and to be near places of interest. Easy access from Malaga, Seville, Jerez and Gibraltar airports was also important.

Having Ronda just down the road is also a great benefit for when we want anything for the house and Carole likes all the shoe shops as well! It's a great place to wander around in the evening when the locals come out to parade. I visit once a year with my rock climbing partner and we enjoy climbing at the many quiet crags from 10 minutes to an hour or so away. Our two boys who are in their 20's also sometimes make it across for some climbing. When Carole and I visit we enjoy some great walks in the mountains and valleys. Our favourite time of year is May and June when the wild flowers are amazing.

What makes this house unique

We are only a couple of minutes from our village's main street which has several small shops selling pretty much all you need including good fresh produce. There is one hotel and quite a few bars offering tapas or a meal.

We equipped the house to a good standard for our own enjoyment rather than as a basic holiday home. Air-con is important on evenings at the peak of summer, although we prefer to sleep with the window open if its not too hot. The pool is a real bonus. We like to spend the day out and about and get back for late afternoon for a couple of hours by the pool. Our lemon tree seems to fruit all year round and you are welcome to pick some for your gin and tonic!

If you fancy a trip further afield there are trains to Cordoba and Granada or an easy drive to Jerez or Seville.

We have installed wifi at the house for free use of our guests

A quiet picturesque location

  • 5 of 5

The location was great for me and my son to go cycling in the local area. We found the accommodation very comfortable with all the amenities for cooking etc. The wifi worked well all week. The main bedroom balcony was really nice for sitting out on, especially later in the day when there was more shade. There were a couple of local shops within 2 minutes walk for bread etc, and there were plenty of tapas bars within 5 minutes walk. Sitting in the main square eating and drinking was very pleasant!

The area is ideal for cycling but very hilly! The trip out towards Grazamela through the cork oaks was beautiful.

I would remommend a stay at Casa de Limon and are likely to return ...

Owner's Response: Many thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed our home and village. I did the same ride yesterday with our son and enjoyed the journey to Grazalema, a little tougher on the continuation to Puerto de las Palomas and then amazing alpine type descent to Zahara and super lunch at Al Lago as a reward. Hope you visit again sometime Martyn

Spent 5 days in Casa de Limon late August. The house is in a small gated complex with a communal pool area. Plenty of on street parking close to the property. The house is dark - as are most Spanish properties to provide protection from the heat of the day. The upstairs balcony off the double bedroom is a sunny space to have breakfast and the downstairs seating and BBQ area gets the afternoon and evening sun. The house is well equipped and comfortable. The lounge area may prove a bit cosy for four adults, though the outside space compensates for this. The equipment for the outside space is excellent with a range of chairs and loungers in the storage area. The pool proved a godsend for cooling off and it was possible to find some shade if required. The pool area never felt crowded although not all properties were occupied during our stay.

The air conditioning is efficient (and necessary) - we never did make use of the wood burner so cannot comment!

Lots of interest in the local area and there is a lot of very useful information in the Casa provided by the owner. We had done some research before travelling but found the provided local knowledge to be invaluable.

Montejaque itself is a manageable size with a couple of supermarkets and an excellent little Panaderia barely 5 minutes from the door. Several restaurants in the village too. We had an excellent tapas meal in the village square, La Cuesta is a nice space but the food was nothing special.

As for getting about we can recommend Acinipo roman remains (no guide, no signage, no info but FREE). coupled with Setenil a village built into the rocks (park out of town and walk in, less stressful).

Ronda is worth a visit - we drove in and parked underground not too expensive.

We did one of the suggested White Villages tours - Owner's advice about Ubrique is spot on - if leather is your thing then go there otherwise there are better options, Benaocaz, El Bosque, Prado Del Rey, and (certainly) Grazalema which lends its' name to the National Park.

The 'Little Beach In The Hills' is well worth the effort at Arroyomolinos. The last couple of km need you to hold your nerve and follow the signs, entry was 3.50 Euros each. (Take the beach chairs from the Casa). Plenty of shade and plenty of picnic benches, a small cafe bar and toilets. Good for swimming but ideal for young children too.

Happy to recommend this for a couple or a family with young children

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your stay at our home in Montejaque. Glad you had a great holiday and enjoyed the village etc. At 1.20 Euro for a beer or a coffee, enjoying the bars and cafe's is not too painful post Brexit vote!

A lovely place to stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time in this house - it had everything in it that we needed; everything was clean and well maintained. The owner Martyn was very helpful, sending us clear directions which we appreciated as we arrived in the dark. The pool and air con were particularly useful as it was very, very hot. We enjoyed sitting outside, under the umbrella. The village is charming and the house is well located for trips to Ronda, Seville or any of the wonderful white villages dotted around. The house is perfect for a small group of up to four - more than that would be difficult as the lounge and kitchen area is on the small side. For three of us it worked well. We thank Martyn for his kindness and care in his instructions on the house and his directions. It made our entry and use of the house stress free. We would recommend this house and would like to return in the future.

A lovely house where you can feel at home

  • 5 of 5

Casa Limon was a nice house in a private and gated quiet complex. The house is very well equipped and the owners provided basic items so you can make a cup of tea when you arrive even if the shops are shut!

The village location means everything is close by, so there are bars and shops within easy walking distance, although it is a fairly quiet village there are a variety of places to eat. Plenty of tapas, and a really nice Italian restaurant.

We had a lovely week here, there is some great walking right on the doorstep. One day we walked to Ronda - a spectacular walk!

Fantastic week

  • 4 of 5

We spent a fantastic week in the comfortable, well equipped and furnished Casa de Limon, where we mixed walking with sightseeing. The arrangements were made speedy and efficiently. The property was clean and very well maintained. It had everything in it you needed. Martyn and Carole had provided those extras that make a stay easy such as a welcome pack, a range of condiments in the kitchen, spare batteries and bulbs and a selection of DVDs. We loved the friendly people in the village and the mini markets had enough choice for a meal in; for more choice we headed to the wholesale butcher in Benaojan.

The cottage has a range of walking route and sightseeing books. The 'Montejaque Circuit' walk was a highlight with beautiful views and abundant wildlife. The owner's advice to take the train from Utrera for our Seville visit was spot on. There was so much more to see and do that we will definitely come back another time, hopefully soon.

Further Details:

Montejaque couldn’t be in a better location if you’re wanting to escape the Costa crowds. It’s a charming, traditional Andalucian ‘pueblo blanco’ (white village) with some of the friendliest locals you’ll find anywhere in Spain. locally many leisure pursuits are available; walking, mountain biking, climbing, tennis, horse riding, bird watching. It’s set in the stunning mountainous scenery of the Serrania de Ronda and Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park with enormous potential for walking and a whole range of adventurous (and not so adventurous) outdoor activities. The nearby Caves at Piletta, where you can see early pre-historic cave paintings, are an absolute must – but don’t expect a slick guided tour and stylish gift shop. It’s much better than that! The village itself is a maze of narrow streets and there’s more than a few tapas bars and cafes to explore as well as some restaurants, this is a quiet, rural place – fast becoming a fashionable and slightly bohemian retreat for art and stressed Spaniards from the big cities. You won’t find too many English speaking people here, but the locals are always happy to welcome outsiders. You’ll probably spend quite some time in nearby Ronda. Although a busy tourist centre (and for good reason) Ronda is a wonderful place. Let it get under your skin. Here you’ll find restaurants aplenty, one of the oldest bull rings in Spain (well worth a look, even if you hate the idea of the ‘sport’) and Ronda’s main attraction, El Tajo – the enormous, stunning gorge. Linger on the Puente Neuvo and dare to look down into the gorge’s depths (trying not to think about the poor people who used to be thrown to their doom from where you’re stood). If you can drag yourself away from the snail’s pace village life of Montejaque or the buzzing atmosphere of Ronda, why not go on a day trip further afield, the magnificent cities of Granada or Seville. In fact, if you’ve got time, you could do both – arguably two of the most wonderful cities in Spain.
