Villa converted into 2 apartments within 5 minutes of Montone Umbria with 360 degree views of the countryside
San Martino is situated on the elevated site of a 14th century church. It has uninterrupted views of the medieval award-winning town of Montone. The house has been tastefully converted into 2 luxury apartments, one of which sleeps 2/3 people, and the other one sleeps 2/3/4, with there own private access and eating areas. The 2 apartments share a beautiful pool, which is a short stroll from the house and is set amongst the vines. Olives and vines dominate the garden and both are very productive. Linda and Ben, the two English owners, encourage the guests to experience the delights of their home-produced wine and the olive oil as well as the seasonal fruits, such as figs and cherries. The garden is home to many beautiful birds and butterflies during the summer months and the fire flies are a bonus in the evening.

About the Owner
Cumbria To Umbria!
Linda and Ben, having spent most of their working lives in professional positions in the Lake District, whilst also running bed and breakfast establishments for 26 years decided to change their life-styles and moved to Italy 18 years ago.
This is their 2nd venture, and San Martino was purchased in 2003, the location being everything.
7 years on the house has been lovingly restored into 3 apartments, and hopefully we now offer a relaxing haven for you to visit and spend some quality time in this very beautiful area of Italy.

It's not that often that absolutely everything falls into place on a continental holiday. Well our luck was definitely in this time. Weather was fantastic, 22-27 degrees for the whole fortnight, with just one hours rain while we were driving. Apartment Anna was very comfortable and equipped with everything you could possibly need and we were encouraged to pick the fresh fruit growing on the property. Montone, just 1/2 hours walk up the hill had an ample choice of good restaurants one with a lovely terrace and stunning views. Montone is also fairly well situated in Umbria meaning we never had to spend more than an hour and a half in the car visiting such beautiful places as Gubbio, Spoleto, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno. Last ,but by no means least, on several occasions, we very much enjoyed Ben's company sitting on the terrace of an evening sampling the region's expensive selection of red wine (3 euros for 1.5 lts!!) Like so many of Ben and Linda's past visitors we have every intention of returning.
Amelia Was Wonderful
A family member suggested that we stay in Montone for a few days in order to explore some of the Italian hill towns. We like to stay in apartments when possible while on vacation, and boy, did we pick a dandy in the one bedroom Amelia apartment at San Martino. From our greeting by Linda, Ben, grandchildren, Meg the dog, and Domino the cat, we were off to a great start enjoying the local area for 6 days. The weather did not always cooperate, so we were unable to enjoy the pool which appeared to be quite inviting. The apartment had everything we needed including a welcome pack which allowed us to prepare a meal. Although there are a number of better known towns in the area (Asissi, Perugia, Gubbio), we enjoyed to tranquility of Montone, a true gem, with several good restaurants. We found that a number of people return to San Martino year after year, spending 2-3 weeks. Virtually all are from the UK where Linda and Ben are from. I think that we were one of the first Americans to stay in the apartment. Thanks again to Linda and Ben for a wonderful stay and good conversation.
We have just got back from a fantastic say at San Martino. We stayed in Amelia – a lovely comfortable apartment with fantastic views and every mod-con. We arrived tired and weary after a 5am start but could not believe how well looked after we were with such a generous welcome pack waiting for us! We spent the first hour eating lunch overlooking the most amazing terrace with views across to Montone.
Right from day one owners Linda and Ben made us feel very welcome and were a wealth of knowledge on local walks and towns worth visiting in Umbria.
The swimming pool looked very inviting – although sadly we did not make it in for a dip this time.
Gubbio was our favourite day trip – with so much charm and a fantastic white knuckle ride in a cable car up to the top of the mountain.
We tried out a couple of the restaurants in nearby Montone and had a few drinks with the locals in Bar Aries but found our most enjoyable evenings were spent at San Martino eating supper with a glass of wine whilst overlooking the valley below and stargazing until late into the night - with the company of resident dog Meg and Domino the Cat!
San Martino is a very special place. We hope to return very soon.
We had a most enjoyable stay in our villa "Amelia". The style of the apartment was very tasteful, beautifully presented and extremely comfortable. The weather did of course help as it was 30 degrees each day. The swimming pool was most inviting with stunning views down the valley. Montone itself was just a short drive or walk away and was truly magical. Fantastic days out to Assisi, Gubbio and Cortona. Linda and Ben always happy to help but by no means intrusive. Once again many thanks for everything.

Whilst it is possible to catch trains to Rome and Florence for the day.
Montone,is a beautifully maintained medieval award winning town "Uno dei Borgo piu belli d'Italia", and provides most of the basic amenities which is only a 5 minute drive from San Martino.
There is a post office, bank with cash machine as well as a number of restaurants which offer a variety of ways to dine to suit all pockets, and 3 grocery shops which offer most commodities, one offering porcetta panninis, a local delicacy on Tuesdays.
There is also a bakery, butchers, tabac, hairdressers, haberdashers and a petrol station.
The "Aries" bar serves delicious coffee and homemade Italian ice-cream and is situated right on the main square.
In addition to these local services,Montone is home to many special festas that take place in this ancient town, mostly in the main Piazzo Fortebraccio.
In early July, the Umbria Film Festival is staged and is run by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python Fame. Every night, for a week, there are films made all over the world to be seen on a large open air screen erected specially in the main Piazza.
For a week in the middle of August there is a special festa "Donazione Della Santa Spina" (A thorn that is supposedly from the crown that Jesus wore at his crucifiction) and here the 3 quarters of Montone compete for a victors banner. Each quarter stage a play, have there own taverns and there are crossbow competitions etc included in this Palio. The whole town transports itself back in time to the middle ages with music and stunning costumes.
In addition there is the Fruits Of The Forest celebrations at the end of October and other events such as Jazz and Brass Bands Festivals which are held throughout the year so that the Piazza always seems alive with fun.
Umbertide is 15 minutes by car, a much larger town with bigger supermarkets and all the facilities that a larger town does provide.
