About the Owner

We are now retired in our 60's. We have been holidaying in France for over 30 years. Initially with children and then without. During that time we have stayed in everything from converted pigsties to a Royal Hunting Lodge, and simple country auberges to Five Star Hotels.

Despite having travelled the world, we always return to France. We love France for its diversity - its love of history, its open countryside, its architecture old and new, but most of all for its food and wine. And so we decided to buy a property in France.

Having our own house means that we no longer have to load up the car with all those “extras” that we took before, such as a corkscrew that works, sharp kitchen knives, a pepper grinder and maybe a cookery book or two.

Your house in Vouvant is lovely. We were very impressed with the decor and the quality of it all, obviously a home and so much bigger than it appeared from the outside.Everyone in the village was very friendly and I think we found all the little alleyways and walks.

The house is great. So good to have sharp kitchen knives and an effective shower. Well done - an inspiration, and so happy to have found this place.

The house and village exceeded all our expectations!

Pretty, friendly village

  • 2 of 5

Vouvant is a charming village with good, basic amenities all within easy walking distance of the house. House is a good size and well-equipped although no TV reception. Generally not very clean and requiring a 'deep-clean' to be fit to let, we told the owner this, whose response was 'you left dishes in dishwasher.' We left breakfast dishes for two in there..

Also, restoration not thorough as, even with temps at 33 c the house was damp - again the owner knew, just said 'it's an old property' and this 'take it or leave it' not mentioned in description.

On one of two roads into the village so noisy.

Owner's Response: We spoke to Mr Tenner 3 days after their return from their 17 day stay and were dismayed to learn that on their arrival some items were not as clean as they would have liked. He offered to send photographs. We thanked him and undertook to take appropriate action. However by not alerting us to the problems when they arrived we were unable to put matters right. There is no TV at the house. It is not claimed that there is. The terms and conditions of rent specifically state that all dishes are to be washed and put away - not left in the dishwasher. With outside temperatures at 33c the inside would have been cooler at say 25c. This is typical of old French stone houses. We are concerned about the tone of Mr Tenner’s review. We do care about our guests. We endeavour to provide a high standard. Many guests return every year. We are sorry that on this occasion we failed to reach Mr Tenner’s expectations.

Well equipped house in picturesque village.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in this very well equipped house in the picturesque village of Vouvant. We ate outside on the upper terrace at lunch time and in the enclosed courtyard in the evenings. The village has a nice restaurant, bolangerie and several interesting shops and art galleries. The cycle rides on quiet roads or through the Forrest were great and the tennis court in the village easy to book. A trip to 'Little Venice' is a must, and hiring an English speaking guide is very informative on the history and wildlife of the area, go early to avoid the crowds.

We would recommend staying at this house and hope to visit again in the future.

Home from Home

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for the perfect French idyll then you'll find it in this small but perfectly formed house set in the charming village of Vouvant. The house has all the amenities and provides a cosy base from which to explore the surrounding countryside or travel further afield to the magnificent coastline. The interior and exterior have always been very well maintained and throughout our visits we have never had cause to complain and would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a 'home from home' atmosphere.

Vouvant offers all the basic needs and the supermarkets are a short drive away. The local people seem to appreciate our efforts to speak French and we feel very welcome wherever we go.

We have recently returned from our fourth visit to this lovely house and are currently considering our next.

We recommend this property wholeheartedly.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to share with others your very positive experience of staying in our house in Vouvant, for the fourth time. Like several of our other guests who return again and again you enjoy the facilities and pleasures that a holiday in this "Plus Beaux Village" has to offer. It is also gratifying that you appreciate the effort we put into maintaining the house and garden.

Delightful gite in a beautiful village

  • 5 of 5

We felt immediately at home on arriving at this charming house. The courtyard and stone building with blue shutters was so pretty, grapes ripening over the doorway and herbs and flowers abundant in pots. Inside there was everything we could possibly need for a very comfortable stay with tasteful decor and lots of interesting books and pictures to look at. We were unlucky with the weather so only able to take advantage of the outside space and BBQ on a couple of occasions but instead spent cosy evenings around the table or on the sofas inside. Vouvant is a buzzing French village and there is plenty to do in the area, whatever the weather!

Just… Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in Vouvant, made all the more enjoyable by your lovely home… so much more than just holiday accommodation, everything you could ask for, so comfortable with everything to hand, especially in the well equipped kitchen. We prepared some wonderful dishes with local produce, finished off with the obligatory ‘Fromage et Vin’.

I would recommend this property and the area to anyone wanting to immerse themselves into French rural life.

French idyll

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we entered Vouvant for the first time I was smitten. When we walked into the cottage via the secluded courtyard I was immediately struck by the welcoming ambience helped by the courtesy bottle of wine! The cottage has been renovated and maintained to a very high standard and has everything needed for a relaxed and carefree holiday.

The village caters for most needs and supermarkets are not too far away. From Vouvant you can explore places of historical interest, tranquil countryside and almost deserted beaches.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. It seems that Vouvant and Susans French House have worked their magic again! We are delighted you enjoyed your second visit and have already booked a third. There is always so much to do and see at all times of the year.

From the Owner

The property needed to be within a day's drive of home, but far enough south to benefit from the improved climate. We wanted a village, to provide a sense of community and be within walking distance of a café/shop and boulangerie and yet be rural, and so we found our house in Vouvant. Vouvant is “one of the most beautiful villages in France” - a medieval village steeped in history and legend, set on a hill surrounded by ancient rampart walls and encircled by a river. It has become a centre for arts and crafts with workshops and exhibitions freely accessible. It has an Auberge, cafés, boulangerie and a shop for the necessities of life. During the summer months it has activities most weekends. Its location provides easy access to a great many attractions and the coast.

Activity and Interests

Within approximately 1 hour's drive there are the warm, sandy Vendee beaches (Les Sables d'Olonne,Jard sur Mer, la Tranche).

Also the lovely town of La Rochelle, with its wonderfull daily market of fresh produce, collonaded streets and picturesque old harbour, guarded by its two towers, surrounded by numerous restaurants.

Alternatively, take the dramatic bridge to the Isle de Re. An island with a very mediterranean feel, and an air of "shabby chic" where the rich and famous holiday.

Airports at la Rochelle or Poitiers are within an hours drive. TGV stations at La Rochelle, Nantes and Niort, also 1 hour drive. St Malo is 4 hours and Calais 7 hours by autoroute. A car is necessary to appreciate the local countryside and visit places of interest as there is no public transport locally.

Fontenay le Comte is 14km to the south and la Chataigneraie is 10km to the north. The forest of Mervent with its walking and VTT trails, zoo, amusement park and water sports centre is about 6km south. The Marais Poitevin (Green Venice), with its canals, wildlife and boat trips and the ruined Historic Abbeys is 30 minutes drive to the south.

Further Details:

Supermarkets and banks are available at la Chataigneraie and Fontenay. There is a street market on Saturday at Fontenay. Within walking distance in the village there is a Tourist Office, Pharmacy, Auberge/restaurant/bar, Creperie, Mini Market, Cafe/Tabac(with WiFi access), other cafes, gift shops and Boulangerie. Several artists workshops/galleries. Fishing permits available from the shop. Tennis court, Bicycle hire, horse riding, canoeing available. Puy de Fou, Futuroscope and the Marais Poitevin within an hours drive.

From the Owner

The house has many endearing qualities: the ability to walk to the boulangerie for your morning croissants and be back by the time the coffee has brewed, walking along the riverside on the way to the café feeding the ducks your stale baguettes, the church bells marking the hours, the riding school out for a “Promenade” with its assorted Thelwell type ponies and everyone saying “Bonjour” as they pass in the street. This is our second home and has been equipped as such. We are pleased to share it with you. When you arrive after your long journey you will find the fridge has plenty of refreshing drinks, the cupboard will have tea and coffee, and all the basic staples to enable you to relax and enjoy your stay.
