Cottage in Sougraigne, Languedoc - Peaceful Location, Horse Riding And Good Walking Near The Village

Lovely stone cottage in foothills of Pyrenees, beautiful location in small village. The hot springs treatment center at Rennes-les-Bains, a local riding school, historic cathar castles and the famous church at Rennes-le-Chateau are all nearby. The house has a lovely living area with beamed ceiling and open chimney and great views from the large, sunny roof terrace. The large double bedroom accesses the terrace.

About Clare Kenny

I am self employed and life in London can get quite hectic, so I love the chance to enjoy a different pace of life. The gorgeous countryside, local events and the relative quiet I find when I visit my cottage helps restore the batteries!

Clare Kenny purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Clare Kenny chose Sougraigne

I bought my house because I was looking for a retreat somewhere, a place where I could unwind from hectic London life. The village is so pretty and the surrounding countryside so beautiful, I feel very lucky to have found it. There are so many things to do.There are numerous footpaths to explore, many a day can be spent hiking locally with a packed lunch! Also nearby are colourful markets, ancient Cathar sites not to mention the mysteries surrounding the church at Renne's le Chateau. In the summer months there are music events, village fêtes and film festivals to look out for. Unwinding and sampling the great local wines and produce while relaxing on the terrace is how I spend a lot of my time there! Exploring French life is great fun and the pace of life in the country is lovely.

What makes this cottage unique

The airport is only 50 minutes away and the Ryanair flight gets me to the house in the early afternoon. I sometimes get a treatment at the natural hot spring health spa in Rennes les Bains during my stay. They have a swimming pool which is filled with warm spring water and is a nice alternative to the local lakes and rivers - The hot spring actually pours out into the river and its healing properties can be enjoyed by all! The coast is an hour and a half's drive and makes a great day out. There are numerous books and films at the house and the quiet that descends as evening comes in is quite remarkable. You rarely see the night sky in all it's glory if you live in a busy city and spending a few hours on the terrace with a glass of wine looking at the stars is a lovely way to relax.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Sougraine is perfectly located in an area which we visited for the first time.  Everything is on your doorstep, including plenty of circular woodland or hill walks, excellent cycling routes and (being in the Cathar region) superb places of historical interest.  Local markets and supermarkets are also nearby and fresh bread can be sourced each morning in Rennes Les Bains, which is about 2 to 3 miles from Sougraine.  The cottage itself is quirky and authentic and is stocked with plenty of regional info and a large DVD stock too!  It is comfortable and has everything you will need and we particularly enjoyed the terrace for lunches, dinners, evening drinks and reading books (it gets the sun all day & early evening).  The furthest we travelled was to Carcassonne (circa 1 hour) and the beaches near to Narbonne (1hr 40 mins).  None of these places are far away, although the roads (especially towards the beaches) are twisting and scenic and hence that is what adds to the enjoyable travel time.  We stayed in the property for a fortnight and despite being active every day we only managed to fit in a small percentage of all the possibilities so we will be returning.  The booking process for the property is very slick and the owner responds promptly to all emails.

Beautiful French Country Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent a fabulous short break during October / November in this beautiful stone cottage ideally located to enjoy the scenic walks in the foothills of the Pyrenees, taking in the beautiful scenery.

We visited the little village of Rennes-les-Bains and the famous church at Rennes-le-Chateau and also enjoyed a day at the famous walled city of Carcassone.

The house has a lovely living area with an open fireplace, perfect for the evenings and the well equipped kitchen meant that we were able to cook well and sample plenty of the local wines whilst enjoying the open fire. In the mornings we were lucky enough with the weather, to be able to sit and enjoy the great views from the large, sunny roof terrace. The peace and tranquility of the village was just what we wanted and is certainly somewhere we would recommend and plan to visit again.

Unique French Country home

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in this unique location. The village is small ... no boulangerie or bar ... but quiet at night, and apparently full of young families. Near by towns, particularly Couiza, offer great bakeries, good groceries, and numerous hikes and driving destinations. The area has a quirky history (google Bugarach, and Renne le Chateau), which adds to the fun. Clare's home was built in the exposed-beam, squeaky floor tradition of French Country style. The kitchen was well equipped, the internet worked (!), and there was a dishwasher. Lots of room on two levels, with wood and laundry facilities in the basement as well. The bed upstairs was very comfortable, though both of us (rather tall) banged our heads on the slanted ceilings. The upper floor terrace was wonderful, very sunny in the afternoon, and occasionally visited by one of the hilarious, very friendly local cats. Parking was not a problem; though the access to the square was via a narrow, turning street, we found it easy to negotiate. Heat was exclusively by plugged in space heaters and a wonderful wood stove, which were more than adequate for our early May visit. There was an extensive library of books and DVD's. Thanks Clare! :)

Comfortable cottage in a quiet village.

  • 5 of 5

We planned to tour France for one month, and decided to spend two weeks at the cottage. When we arrived, the cottage was clean and tidy and everything that we could possibly need was there.

We enjoyed many breakfasts and evenings sitting on the sun terrace admiring the surrounding countryside and catching the sun.

The cottage was situated in a superb location and it allowed us to visit lots of fantastic places. The roads were quiet which allowed us several long bike rides and walks through the countryside.

All in all a fantastic place to stay and an amazing holiday.

Le château
Arques Lake is just a few more minutes drive from Rennes les Bains (15-20 from Sougraigne) a...
Car: necessary

Arque lake is 15mins drive for bathing and picnics, also swimming holes in rivers are within walking distance and very popular in the summer months.

The coast is approximately an hour and a half drive. This will get you to the coastal stretch between Perpignan and Narbonne where many good beaches, restaurants and local markets can be found. A drive south of Perpignan through the pretty costal fishing villages heading towards the spanish border is also a lovely and interesting drive.

The nearest airport is Carcassonne (50 mins drive) and then Perpignon 1 1/2 hours.

Toulouse airport is 2 hours drive.

A car is essential in the area as there is no public transport available.

The nearest village is Rennes-les-bains, 5 mins by car, where there is a hot springs treatment center and outdoor heated swimming pool. There is a bar and a couple of restaurants.

Couiza, Rennes-le-chateau,Quillan,Esperaza and Limoux are all within 15-30 mins by car and have their own sights, market days restaurants, bars, shopping, nightspots etc.

Further Details:

The nearest shops, restaurants and bars are in Rennes-les-Bains and Couiza, there's a cash machine at the post office in Cuiza.

There are mobile shops (bread, patisserie, charcouterie) that come to the village on specific days (details at the house). The nearest supermarket (intermarche) is just outside Couiza (15 mins drive). There is also Arcadie a lovely organic shop with fantastic breads, vegetables and cheeses and a lot more just before the supermarket. There are many excellent wine co-ops in the area and an organic wine producer can be found on the road to Limoux (20 mins drive). Carcassonne is the nearest city. The old town and medieval cité is definitely worth visiting.
