Apartment in Historic Centre of Town

Overview

Property

Updated: 21-Oct-2016
3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in historic quarter of old Spanish seaside town

The apartment is in the most historic and beautiful street in Sanlucar adjacent to the palace, the oldest church, and bodegas. It can accommodate 6/7 people and has been furnished in the local Andalusian style. It overlooks a patio for exclusive use of the residents and there is parking in the basement garage. Private parking is essential if you come to Sanlucar by car. Sanlucar is located in the far south of Spain on the Atlantic – on the Costa de la Luz (coast of light). North Africa is not far away. It not only has great food, fine wine, lovely beaches, a warm climate and Europe’s biggest wildlife reserve on its doorstep, ‘this near perfect place’ has a people with a passion for life that is always enthralling. The town has an old quarter (barrio alto) and a relatively newer part (barrio bajo) that comprises much of the lower part of the town and the beach area. The barrio alto (where the apartment is situated) is where most of the centuries old convents, churches and palaces are located.

About the Owner

We are a Scottish/English couple - not big property owners, and we have just the one apartment in Andalucia. We wanted to acquire a comfortable holiday home for ourselves away from all the big 'Costa' developments, in the very Andalucian town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, which had become one of our favourite places to visit. As our children have grown up they too have become big fans of Sanlucar, especially in their teenage years when they could safely wander around the old streets and squares, the beach and the bars, unsupervised by us. We always discover something new each time we visit, and regular attendance at the excellent language school in Sanlucar has helped us to get to know the place and the people.

A well-situated apartment in a fascinating Spanish town.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a short, early spring break in this comfortable and well-appointed apartment in a quiet residential development. Booking was straightforward and the owners supplied comprehensive and helpful information. The apartment is set back from the street overlooking an interior courtyard and was very peaceful at night during our stay. Directions to find the apartment were very good and the underground parking was very useful. The apartment was spotlessly clean and well-supplied with bed linen, towels, etc.

As the owners advise, there is no need for a car to get around Sanlucar and you are better off walking in the narrow streets rather than trying to drive and park. The old town is very pretty and was very busy during our stay during holy week or 'Semana Santa', when we saw numerous religious processions. There are some lovely gardens in the town and the scent of orange blossom in early spring was wonderful. This was a great time of year to visit with warm sunshine and mild temperatures by day and cool nights.

We liked the friendly atmosphere of the town and there are many old churches, bodegas and historical buildings to visit. Our hire car was useful however for longer trips and a visit to Cadiz was very interesting, while enthusiasts for naval history can visit Cape Trafalgar down the coast from Cadiz.

Our stay certainly lived up to expectations and we would recommend the apartment to friends and family.

Lovely Sanlucar apartment

  • 4 of 5

A lovely apartment which is very well appointed, comfortable and homely. Generously proportioned it is best suited to four adults and two children as the third twin room is quite compact. The facilities (kitchen, bathrooms) very clean and well fitted out. The owners provided helpful guidance on getting the best from the apartment and Sanlucar & its environs. The welcome pack of provisions was thoughtful and most welcome on our arrival. We hope to return.

Beautifully maintained in a great location

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely property: well maintained, comfortable and in a great location. The facilities were excellent, with everything we could possibly need, and the apartment was cleaned to a very high standard. We really enjoyed staying in the historic part of the town, and can definitely recommend visits to the nearby tea gardens and bodega, and the guided tours in both. It's a short walk to the two main squares, where we were spoilt for choice when it came to tapas and restaurants and cafes specialising in local fare and recipes. We really enjoyed just sitting and watching the world go by, followed by a stroll down the main avenue to the seafront. Great apartment in a beautiful Andalucian town, with lots to see but small enough to explore on foot. We also tok advantage of the local coach service to spend a day in Cadiz, which is well worth a visit! Thoroughly recommended.

perfect

  • 5 of 5

A wonderfully comfortable apartment, perfect for our family of five. We had a lovely stress free stay here, and didn't encounter any problems at all. The apartment was clean, well-maintained and situated in a great area of town. The ever helpful owner provided a great service and gave plenty of information throughout. As for Sanlucar - a perfect destination to both explore and relax, but most importantly for us away from the hordes on the Costas - a real Spanish holiday.

Beautiful Property

  • 5 of 5

We travelled as a family (6 adults) to this beautiful property in Sanlucar. Patricia was very helpful from my first enquiry about booking through to booking, staying at the property and then returning the keys. All very efficient and easy. The apartment is in a beautiful mansion block overlooking the gardens of the palace of the Duchess of Medina Sidonia. It is also in a great position right in the heart of the old town.

On arrival there was a great welcome pack of Oranges, tea, coffee, milk, bread and jam and loads of information and hints and tips about the local and surrounding area including great places to eat. The apartment is beautifully decorated and was great for our stay.

We had a great time in Sanlucar and we could not recommend this apartment more highly - Thank you Patricia!

Det var et dejligt sted med gode muligheder for udflugter og sightseing

  • 4 of 5

Gode værelser, gode - lidt hårde - senge...super lejlighed. Området var roligt.

Eneste problem var, at parkeringsbåsen, der hører til lejligheden, er temmelig smal..

Men helt klart en stor anbefaling fra os :-)

Location

From the Owner

We love the very Andalucian nature of Sanlucar, which has been preserved in spite of so much development in Spain. The old streets and squares remain, and we were lucky to find a property which is in the heart of old Sanlucar. In the summer months it is bustling with visitors, many from Seville, and in the winter it is much calmer and very relaxing, often with beautiful, bright weather. We have also enjoyed being able to visit the Donana, a fiercely protected nature reserve but which is just a short boat trip from Sanlucar. Sanlucar is also a wonderful base for visiting the historic towns of Jerez and Cadiz, which never lose their attraction for us. Gastronomically speaking, the combination of the freshest fish, manzanilla, and sunshine is irresistible, we find!

Special interest holidays:

The Doñana national park is famous for the variety of species of birds, either permanent residents, winter visitors from north and central Europe or summer visitors from Africa, such as colourful colonies of flamingo. In the marshes and amid the cork oak forests, you've a good chance of seeing grey herons, lanner falcons, ring and turtle doves, partridges, oxpeckers, cattle egret, storks, vultures and possibly the rare Spanish Imperial Eagle. There is a twice daily boat trip to the park from the pier on the Bajo de Guia in Sanlucar. You can also explore the park in a safari jeep or on horseback.

There are 3 towns in the area that make sherry: Sanlucar de Barrameda, Puerto de Santa Maria and Jerez. There is not much difference between the sherries of Jerez and Puerto de Santa Maria, Sanlucar, however, produces a unique sherry - Manzanilla. Manzanilla can only be made here due to the micro climate. There are 9 sherry producers in the town - some offer guided tours.

Coast/Beach:

Sanlucar has two beaches with fine grained golden sands. There are sailing, canoeing and windsurfing clubs, all of which provide lessons. Horse riding is also a major feature of the area. There are a number of local centres, many of which offer lessons in riding and dressage. There are many golf courses in the region. On the outskirts of town there is a golf club which has fine views over the Guadalquivir river and the Doñana National Park beyond.

Further Details:

Sanlucar is famous for its seafood, particularly langostinos, its fresh vegetables grown in the area surrounding the town, and its splendid manzanilla sherry. The best place to eat is in the restaurants and bars by the waterfront (Bajo de Guia), which also have a great selection of wines. However there are many other tapas bars and restaurants in the town that offer excellent value for money. Most are only a few mins walk from the apartment. Palace adjacent to apartment block has a beautiful cafe area and exotic gardens that are open all day.

Facilities

From the Owner

Our property is in the heart of the old quarter, but is a well equipped, modern apartment. Our neighbours are, on one side, a sherry bodega, and on the other side, a historic church, and the palace of the Duchess of Medina Sidonia. Two of the bedrooms overlook the palace gardens which are at the back of our apartment. Just along the road is the old castle, part of which has been refurbished to accommodate a very stylish restaurant. A 5 minute walk, past the old market, takes you to the main town square with its fountain, palm trees, tapas bars, and endless opportunities for sitting around and watching the world go by. From there you can stroll through to a smaller square and on down a tree lined promenade to the beach.
