We have just returned from a 10 day break staying at Domaine de Clément in Fontiers-Cabardès. We had a great time!
The accommodation was comfortable and warm (Autumn nights do get a bit fresh) and, although furnished in a simple style, we found that we had everything that we needed.
Steve, the owner, was extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome: he was on hand if we needed to ask him anything, otherwise we were all happy just to get on with enjoying life!
Fontiers-Cabardès is ideally situated for exploring a wealth of interesting places. Wonderful villages like Montolieu (famous for its shops selling second-hand, rare and specialist books - French equivalent of Hay-on-Wye) and Saissac, with its castle and amazing panoramic views, are very close. Carcassonne and the Cathar trail is easily accessible, and we kept on finding ourselves driving, and walking, alongside the beautiful Canal du Midi. We managed day trips out East to the Med. and South to the foothills of the Pyrénées too.
We went out of season but I can see that this would be a wonderful haven in the height of Summer with its big pool and wealth of shady outside seating areas.
Just spent a very enjoyable week at this place. Can't review the studio we booked as on arrival the owner, Steven, kindly upgraded us to a cottage with three bedrooms, which was wonderful and we appreciated the extra space. The cottages are tucked away in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by trees and with a stream running through the grounds. It was very peaceful, with just the sound of the water, birds singing and the wind in the trees. Lots of butterflies. Three friendly dogs, and we got to meet one of the cats. The pool was great, and we were happy to do very little except potter around, although we also visited Carcassonne - only a short drive away and not to be missed - a lake, and several beautiful villages. The nearest village is five minutes away by car (you could walk, but we were too lazy) and has a shop and a lively cafe/bar which does good food. We watched a couple of football matches there as Euro 2016 was on (competing with a jazz band one night, playing outside the cafe) with a friendly mix of locals and visitors. Steven was welcoming but left us to our own devices and the atmosphere was very laid back. Ideal for couples and families, and we'd like to go back one day.
Despite the unseasonal wet weather we had one of the best holidays ever. The setting is idyllic; the Petit Clement is set deep in a valley
(It is as the description says 'a Sun Trap') surrounded by trees. The most spectacular being two three hundred year old cedar trees. A
magnificent babbling stream runs through the centre of the property. The pictures and description of the accommodation give an accurate impression of what to expect upon arrival. It was prepared to a high standard and spotlessly clean.
We were warmly welcomed by the owner Steve when we arrived. He gave a quick guided tour and explained all we needed to know. He was always willing to answer questions, give us ideas of places to visit or just have a friendly chat. Steve plays guitar in a local band which sometimes performs at the bar in the closest village. I can thoroughly recommend this for a fantastic evenings entertainment. The locals were friendly and we enjoyed their company. The bar is also a restaurant and provides good food and service. There is also a small supermarket a few metres from the bar which has limited stock but does have fresh bread daily.
The pool was great for the few days of sun we had and a great place to relax. We found lots to do when the weather was against us. We particularly enjoyed La Tours, which are the ruins of four medieval castles set on the summits of a small range of hills. This trip takes about three hours and is a reasonable climb. We also visited Narbonne, Narbonne Plage and Carcassone all of which held their own fascination.
I would and have already recommended a stay here to friends. We would love to go back and stay longer than a week next time.
Our stay at Domaine de Clement provided us with happy memories, new friends and a fantastic holiday at great value!!
The Montagne Noire in the Aude is a region we visit regularly and therefore have always looked for affordable accomodation. What a find Clement was!
Set in an idyllic valley, next to a mountain stream, on the edge of the village of Fontiers Cabardes with its lovely bar/restaurant; Clement was everything we wished for.
Warm, friendly hosts. Clean, simple accommodation in peaceful surroundings all at a very affordable price.
My favourite day was spent laying by the pool sipping beers with other guests lestening to Gary Moore and Damien Dempsey and continuing into the evening with a communal barbecue - just wonderful! I am sure we will re-visit very soon!
Clement provided one of our most magical holidays ever. Tucked away in the woods, this delightful cluster of gites around a handsome petit chateau truly felt like we were stepping back in time. The accommodation was very clean, comfortable and well maintained. Not luxurious, but that's not what we wanted as it's important for the children to kick-back and relax in a family-friendly holiday home.
The owner couldn't have been more affable and friendly. It was great to have English owners on-site who really know the area yet are very much integrated into the community - not like many ex-pats.
The youngsters quickly made friends and enjoyed many hours in the lovely pool. We had planned to tour the area but found the children were so happy by the pool and playing in the woods, fields and stream that they sought no other entertainment. It was joyful to see young teens actually playing! They had a wonderful time.
We had a great day in Carcasonne - which is very pretty and has some fantastic eateries and plenty to do for a day or more. We also swam and picnicked by the local lac and visited a few pretty villages for the markets or lunch ... but mainly we were all happy in our wondrous enclave relaxing by day and barbecuing by evening.
I can thoroughly recommend Clement for adults or a family holiday. I had wondered if we should holiday inland but we didn't miss the coast at all. Seasides are within an hour if you want to enjoy the beach - but we didn't get around to it as there was so much to keep us here.
A car is an absolute must but the village is a very pleasant stroll away for bars and restaurants.
I spent a week in this location in August 2013, and it really wasn't long enough.
The direct flight from Dublin to Carcassone takes less than a couple of hours - enough time to go from a 'Jacket On' Irish Summer to a 'Jacket Off' South of France one.
Clement is less than half an hour away from the airport, so leaving on a morning flight from Dublin meant I arrived in time for lunch (albeit a late one, but with a glass or two of wine!).
The accommodation was spotless and the hosts were on hand to make sure everything was to my satisfaction - which it was. The hosts were very friendly, and readily accessible, for the duration of my stay.
The location was perfect. It has a great mix of a 'Get Away from it All' feel in the local area, with a 'Lets Go and Explore' option in nearby towns and cities. Locally there were lots of forest walks/runs, lakes to swim in, and small local villages to potter around in well away from the main tourist trail. Slightly further afield you could visit the beautiful city of Carcassone or (a little further away) Toulouse or even (quite a bit further away) Barcelona. Each day you can follow your mood - have chilled day locally, or a more adventurous exploring day slightly further away.
It has a very family feel to it as the owners live on site (they even arranged a 'Clement Olympics' for the kids on the site (which their own family kids enthusiastically joined in!). The pool was excellent too - never too busy, and the friendly atmosphere permeated here also.
My week just flew by.
I definitely plan to return for the perfect combination of 'chilling' and 'exploring' in a very friendly and welcoming environment.
Very highly recommended and certainly worth a five star rating.
