Our stay in Moulin Bas

  • 4 of 5

This property is located approx 30 minutes north of Carcassonne and is amongst a group of properties owned by Steve, who was there to great us when we arrived. It was very clean upon arrival and proved very comfortable.

The whole property is located down in a small wooded valley and, as a consequence the sun did not hit the property until about 9.30 am and was back in shade by about 6 pm. Whilst this meant that we did not see much evening sun we all slept well as the house was nice and cool- not hot sticky nights however hot the day! I would recommend looking at the property on Google Maps before you go so that you know how to find it when you get there. The track is very easy to miss!

The pool was about 100 yards away and was surrounded by a toddler proof wall and gate. The pool was cool, and whilst nice for a cooling dip it was not somewhere the boys played in for too long. It was kept well clean and safe with plenty of loungers for everyone.

The stream was lovely to fall asleep to at night and was somewhere else for the children to play.

Whilst we as a family did not need the WiFi it was apparent that one would have to go up to near the games room to get a signal. Once there the signal was fine if that is what you needed.

We did go with my wife's elderly parents who did struggle a little with the stone steps that lead down to the property, Having said that Steve was happy for them to take a shortcut around the back to make it a little easier.

Carcassonne old city is very striking when you see it for the first time. It was very popular with the tourists, but had a great choice of restaurants to eat at in its centre, many of which did great pizzas for the fussier child.

I can also recommend the Lac de la Cavayere, which is a lake just south of the city. This has a sandy and a pebbled beach, tree climbing and a great waterpark with some huge inflatable slides. Great fun and exhausting for the kids.

Steve was there everyday and was always quick to solve problems when they arose- we had one collapsing bed for example!

Overall we had a great time at this property and it was great value for money. Thanks Steve

Beautiful location for relaxing and exploring

  • 5 of 5

The cottage with the stream running by and the pool provide an excellent spot for relaxing and just enjoying the sun in a beautiful and peaceful location. A mile away is a charming village (perfect for access by bike) where fresh croissants/bread can be purchased each morning. Further afield (need a car) are lakes to swim in, old castles to visit, and of course Carcassonne.

Overall we had a great time and highly recommend the cottage and area. Steve is a great host, very helpful, and nothing is too much trouble for him - even our large dog felt welcome by Steve's dogs.

Lovely family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great holiday - loads to do and see in the surrounding areas, but mostly our 2 boys just wanted to stay and play in the stream/swim in the pool/entertain the dogs and observe all the wildlife! Everyone was so friendly and helpful, we really felt welcome. There is even a conveniently located playpark opposite the bar/restaurant in the village so everyone could relax when we went out. Planning a return visit next year

Fantastic place

  • 5 of 5

Moulin Bas was great, an old mill just by the river. Nice big lounge, with TV, bedrooms fine, lovely terrace outside where we BBQ'd most nights. The kids enjoyed the garden, the pool and meeting the other guests. Our dog also had a great time, getting on fine with the resident dogs who were lovely with her.

I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this place for a holiday if you like sunshine, relaxation and allowing the kids to play in safety.Theres not much traffic and it was so peaceful.

Fabulous fun and relaxing week at Moulin Bas!

  • 4 of 5

We flew into Toulouse as we came from gatwick and drove through some of the most gorgeous scenery I have ever seen to arrive and be greeted by Steve who couldn't have welcomed us more! What a fantastic week we had some days lazing by the pool, others more energetic playing table tennis and eating lots using the BBQ provided! On other days we drove our hire car up into the stunning mountainous areas, went below to the caves and ate croque monsieurs and drank orangina in quaint village cafes, took a trip on a canal boat, toured the magnificent castle of Carcassone and even drove down to the coast to the beach and had a lovely fish lunch! I love this region of France and would love to return as there is so much to see and do if you hire a car! The gite was clean and provided all we needed for the most perfect self catering holiday for the five adults + a bump! There was a huge supermarket in Carcasonne which we visted a couple of times for supplies which always seemed to be on route home from our days out which was handy! There was plenty of information in a folder for us and Steve was always on hand if we needed any advice. There was even a woodburner in case we got chilly at night which in fact we only had to use the once as the weather was incredible the week we stayed! My only regret is that we ate at the local restaurant in the town on the last night and as the food was so good we certainly would have gone back for more having realised earlier! If you want to get away from it all and do nothing, explore and chill as we did or have a fun filled excursion packed trip, stay here as it is a fantastic base for all options! We said as they have a number of gites and we have a huge family it would be great to hire them all for all of us to enjoy on mass!

Hidden Gem

  • 4 of 5

A relaxing week in idyllic surroundings - accommodation was as described and Steve, the owner, was always on hand if needed - a marvellous place to return to and relax after a day spent exploring the surrounding area - a 20 minute stroll to the bar in the village rounded each day off perfectly - will certainly return and have already recommended to friends.

Further Details:

There is plenty to see and do in region around Carcassonne.

There are numerous freshwater lakes for swimming as well as wonderful forest walks, running, cycling and mountain biking opportunities. There are mountains, rivers, trout streams and lakes, ancient cities, towns, villages, thermal springs, abbeys, and cathedrals, châteaux and castles, notably the famous mountain fortresses popularly known as Cathar castles.

The region is famous for its wine and vineyards, bustling markets, festivals and live entertainment, including the magnificent fireworks display in Carcassonne on 14th July, Bastille Day.

The Carcassonne Festival always features

great bands, this year featuring Sting, Johnny Hallyday

as well a host of other rock, pop and classical concerts.

We are not too far away from Mediterranean beaches.

The sea beaches of Languedoc Roussillon tend to be

larger and sandier than Provence's pebbly equivalents,

and some stretch for miles along the coastline . If you get off the beaten track, some of Languedoc's beaches are amongst the most beautiful in the South of France.

Narbonne Plage is a huge sandy beach, and only 1 hour away.  La Franqui and Leucate are two of Languedoc's beaches that are regarded as 'excellent'. Part of La Franqui's beach is double-sided - with the sea on one side and the etang (inland lake) on the other. Leucate has two beaches - one larger one that feels like a southern Californian or Australian beach town, and a more remote, thin strip of beach bordered by rocks. Another delightful beach is Argèles - Languedoc's most famous beach - which at its northern end is truly beautiful,

with its stunning views of the Pyrenees. There are thermal springs and spas, grottos and caves, and reminders of the Languedoc's long and rich history, and everywhere reminders of the the Cathars and the Papal Crusade against them.
