Farmhouse cottage in Vailhourles, nr. Villefranche de Rouergue, Aveyron, Midi Pyrenees 12200 - Peaceful Location with Pool

The cottage is a traditionally restored 19th century farmhouse nestling in the Aveyron region of the Midi Pyrenees and offering splendid views of the gently rolling countryside. It is in a very peaceful position with little passing traffic apart from the postman and our neighbours and is within walking distance of the village of Memer where fresh bread and croissants can be purchased at the family owned boulangerie. There is also a restaurant and a bar/tabac/general shop where you can purchase essentials. 15 mins drive away is the delightful town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue which holds a lively and colourful market (recently voted by the Guardian the best market in France) every Thursday. Our local leisure lake, Lac de Parisot, with boating, pleasant walks and bar/restaurant is 10 mins drive away,

The accommodation comprises an open plan living/dining area, fully fitted, well equipped kitchen and double bedroom with en-suite shower room on the ground floor. There are two further bedrooms and a family bathroom upstairs. The renovation has retained the character of the cottage with exposed stonework and many of the original old beams. The ground floor is tiled throughout and the thick, stone walls help to keep the cottage cool in summer. The upstairs rooms have wooden flooring and the bedrooms are carpeted.

The back door opens onto the terrace and lawned garden from which you can enjoy a glass of chilled wine whilst enjoying spectacular sunsets or watching the stars. The shaded eating, relaxing space is furnished with dining table, chairs and BBQ and just a stone's throw across the lawn is the 10m x 5m swimming pool.

The house is ideal for a family holiday where the emphasis is on tranquillity and relaxation whether it be lounging around the pool or, for the more energetic, playing a game of table tennis, badminton or boules or walking/cycling around the picturesque country lanes.

Many of our guests enjoy the fact that we are available to answer any queries and provide helpful information. Others prefer their privacy and like to keep themselves to themselves. Either way is absolutely fine with us - it is your holiday and we just want you to enjoy yourselves.

About Pat Dickinson

I fell in love with this area back in 2003 when I visited with friends. The people are so friendly and the surrounding areas are so beautiful I ended up buying a house here. After several years of using it as a holiday home I eventually decided to escape a hectic city life and moved permanently in 2007. My partner, Jonathan, joined me a year later and we share our life with Billy our dog, Albi the cat and our chickens and ducks.

The house is situated within a very peaceful and friendly village and we love the fact that you are immersed within the French way of life. The location is great in that there are so many great places to visit all within 45mins -90mins

We enjoy the clear night skies full of stars, the liveliness of the market towns and the availability of good food and wine.

Dear Pat - a week since we left Maubars and it seems ages already. This is just to thank you for a fantastic three weeks. In years of renting in France we have never had such a friendly and well equipped house - a lovely welcome pack and no need to buy the endless necessities of everyday life. The pool is great,and wonderful set of games etc make it perfect - to quote our 14 year old granddaughter 'it's like a private resort'.

Notes on accommodation: WiFi internet access available. The cottage is a no smoking property. Pets are considered. The owners stay in separate accommodation nearby and will be on hand to answer any queries you may have. Outside: The house is set in three acres of gardens, fields and woodland and is surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside full of deer and wild boar. Guests have use of the 10m x 5m pool at the rear of the house, with its large terrace and comfortable, relaxing sunloungers. There is a BBQ and plenty of tables and chairs for outdoor eating in a choice of locations in sun or shade. Activities available include table tennis, boules, darts and badminton. Conditions permitting, seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as fresh chicken and duck eggs may be available from the garden. Guests are welcome to explore the gardens and to say hello to our chickens and ducks who are always happy to dispose of any leftovers you may have. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen, bath/hand and pool towels are included. The property is thoroughly cleaned prior to arrival. Other: Bookshelves on the roomy landing provide a wide range of reading material and games.

Fabulous pool and farmhouse in a great location.

This farmhouse is a short distance off the road that runs between Villefranche de Rouergue and Caylus. The hamlet is far enough away from the road to be lovely and quiet but close enough to reach the supermarkets on the edge of Villefranche in just 10 minutes. Infact, the location is a distinct advantage when it comes to exploring the area. So many holiday homes are isolated which can make shopping a bit of a chore. Villefranche de Rouergue is a great local town with a fabulous market on a Thursday. We also loved the medieval village of Najac which is also about 15 minutes away in a different direction. Great for canoeing !

The farmhouse worked well for our family group of 6. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and the satellite TV helped us keep up with the Olympics in Rio. There is a table on the patio outside which worked well although in August it was a bit warm at lunchtime. Luckily there is another table in the shade at the back of the old barn.

The swimming pool is fabulous, set in the garden next to a lovely old barn. It has a small ledge around the sides which is really useful for young ones to put their feet on when in the pool. The pool cover is great for keeping the water warm overnight. We had our own mini Olympics making full use of the pool, badminton court, and table tennis table.

The owners stay with their lovely dog in the barn closeby and are on hand to ask for advice or assistance with anything, but the farmhouse feels secluded and private.

There is lots to do and see in the area but if you just need to recharge your batteries this is a great place to lie by the pool and just soak up the sunshine. The pool has full sun on it from mid-morning throughout the day until dusk which means you can still catch some sunshine in the early evening after a day out. It is great to find a pool which keeps the sun for so long.

This is a lovely place for a summer holiday. Sitting in the peace and quiet by the pool you could be anywhere. The beauty of it is you are only 15 minutes from a lovely old medieval town. There is something here to keep everyone happy.

Rodez airport is the nearest and is approximately 1 hour by car. Toulouse airport is about one and a half hours away. There is a train service (slow) between Toulouse and Villefranche de Rouergue (approx 10kms away) and a faster one from Toulouse to Caussade (approx 30kms away). It is advisable to have the use of a car as there is no local transport available.


The property is 1.5km from Memer, a small village with a bakery and bar/tabac/general shop and 1.5km from Vailhourles. Other towns in the area are Villefranche de Rouergue 10km, Cahors 45km, Rodez 60km, Albi 80km and Toulouse 100km. Within 2 hrs drive you can visit the world's highest viaduct at Millau, near to the cheese caves of Roquefort in the Grands Causses National Park. Also within reach is the medieval town of Carcassonne (about 2.5 hours away).

Further Details:

There are plenty of local walks lasting from 40mins to three hours. Villefranche and Lac de Parisot have tennis courts and tennis racquets are provided at the cottage. Bikes are available at the cottage and locally horse riding, fishing and kayaking can be arranged. There are local markets in Villefranche (Thurs); Cordes and Figeac (Sat); Saint Antonin & Limogne (Sun); Caussade (Mon) and Caylus(Tues). There are several good local restaurants and the wine-growing areas of Cahors and Gaillac are nearby. There is also the opportunity to try the superb Roquefort cheese or, when in season, the locally grown truffles.

Booking Notes:
Once the dates have been confirmed by us, the booking is considered to be firm on receipt of a 25% non-returnable deposit (cheque payable, in euros or sterling, to A. P. Dickinson or by bank transfer). The remainder would then be due 8 weeks prior to the rental period. A damages deposit of £250/250 euros (in cash, payable to the owner on arrival at the cottage) is also required. This will only be used in the event of any damage occurring.

Changeover Day:
The changeover day is Saturday. We ask that guests do not arrive until 4pm and leave by 10 am on the day of departure, giving us time to clean the property. The pool is cleaned regularly. During the winter, changeover day can be more flexible.
