About the property

Townhouse in Vejer de la Frontera, Costa de la Luz - Beautiful Traditional Home in Ultimate Central Location, Next to Spectacular Historic Church

In the ultimate central location adjacent to the town church and overlooking a small plaza, this is a large traditional upper class house which includes a past as convent, casino, and telegraph office and has been thoroughly and tastefully modernised. Oak beams, high ceilings and traditional tiled floors, thick walls and shutters inside, traditional whitewash walls and wrought iron balconies outside including three walkout balconies onto the church plaza where tourist parties stop. No house is more central. Sleeps 6 in two double rooms and one twin bedroom, plus a daybed for optional use in a fourth room. Two bathrooms, one ensuite, both with twin washbasins, one bath, one huge walk-in shower. Large (10m long) living/dining room. Huge private roof terrace overlooking church, plaza, and entire town, with lots of local colour in the fiestas, and great views at all times. Patio furniture. Large open-plan kitchen. Totally refurnished, top quality beds and sprung mattresses. Very light due to windows on every aspect, plus 'light bricks' in the ceiling to let in a diffuse illumination, and a large glazed central atrium. The sheer size surprises people - it is around 250m2 on one floor, and the roof private roof terrace is the same size. This is a one-off property in the most privileged position in Vejer - you are actually in the location that other properties have views up to or across to, but are not that close to. You overlook the town, not the other way around. To get a better idea of the interior, see the walkthough video: . A special and unusual property in a much-photographed location, very popular with guests who are generally greatly surprised with what is included. Over half of bookings are repeats - see some entries in the guest book in the photos.

About Giles

I'm a professional living in central London. Owning the property has caused me to learn Spanish to a fluent level, read literature, travel widely.

Giles purchased this apartment in 2002

Why Giles chose Vejer de la Frontera

It was love at first sight! I love it, I know that I am looking after a special place with millennia of history, and I like that people are happy in it and that it contributes to the local economy. The people here have a lot of time for other people, especially Spanish speakers and it is a very warm and family-centric culture. I also value the very fresh air free of dust and pollution, the glorious local food and drink, the fact that not every single day has a blazing sun and blue sky, the climate is more nuanced whilst being at the southernmost tip of mainland europe. People live well here - oh that this were available elsewhere! This particular property is for those who love to be in the centre of it all, between church and castle - you will find others 'in the area', but it's not quite the same thing.

What makes this apartment unique

If you like to feel 'on top of the hill' then this property may appeal either because it is in such a privileged position, adjacent to the church overlooking some utterly beautiful cobbled streets and small plaza, or because of the unusually spacious 10m lounge and huge airy layout. If these aspects do not influence you, then all the delightful bars and restaurants within 5 mins may do so. The more homework you do, the more you will discover that this property is different from the average 100 square metre offering and that's why so many return - see the photos for guest commentaries of families who have been 10x and love it more and more.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a brilliant time. The house was in a perfect location for us and having stayed in other houses in the village it was the by far the best. I suppose we were slightly wary of the roof terrace with our four year old but as we spent most days at the beach it wasn't really a problem. We would definitely like to book again..."

S.H. September 2006

"We spent weeks 40 & 41 in your property this year and loved every minute of our visit, so much so that we would like to know whether these weeks are likely to be available in 2008."

A.R. October 2007

"We loved staying at the house in Vejer. It really was a dream come true for all of us. Shortly after arriving at the house my husband and I both said, "I could live here". Thank you so much."

N.W. June 2008

"I've been meaning to write to thank you for our fabulous stay in your house in Vejer the first three weeks of July. It really is a wonderful place with the most perfect location. We loved everything about the house and the town.

Parking: Lots of questions Notes on accommodation: Nov-April: Heating comes in 4 forms: (1) dehumidifiers which raise temperature slightly and improve comfort vastly (2) slight electric heating (3) Dovre log-burning stove in living room (4) economical biomass pellet-burning heater with forced air ducting for bedrooms, atrium, and ensuite. You buy wood and pellets locally. For months Nov-April you get an electricity allowance of 20 kWH/day and pay the rest at cost (0.14 euro/unit), in case you use electicity inappropriately. Pellets are very economical: 4 euros for a 15kg bag, good for 7-14hrs heating - search for Leroy Merlin 'pellets combustibles', 1/2 hr drive or get a 1/2 tonne delivered, 190 euros in 2018. Outside: Large private roof terrace with views over adjacent spectacular church and town. Hardwood table, chairs, steamers. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bedlinen included, changed weekly. House cleaned weekly. Other: Additional room with sofa/daybed

Fabulous old-world property in the center of Vejer

  • 5 of 5

We are three 60+ friends who enjoy exploring the 'Real Spain'. Vejer is one of the most beautiful of the Pueblos Blancos and it has everything one could wish for. Casa de las Campanas is a wonderful old-world, very spacious, village house. It is within walking distance of many quirky boutiques and fabulous restaurants. It is beside the church and while some people may find the bells annoying - we found them delightful! The beaches of El Palmar, Cabo de Trafalgar, Canos de Meca, Conil and Fuente del Gallo are all only a short drive away. We hope to return to this wonderful property soon again. Carmel, María and Bet. Lovely spacious property with everything we needed

  • 5 of 5

Great place. Could do with some extra loungers on the terrace but not something that we thought about too much as everything else was perfect.

Excellent accommodation in marvellous location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 5 nights with friends and had the most marvellous time. The accommodation is really spacious, all of the appliances are of a very high standard and very well equipped. The roof terrace is spectacular with amazing views of Vejer. I would highly recommend.

Great Stay

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was really large and could comfortably handle six people. The photo's don't really do the property justice, it was well maintained and clean, with plenty of equipment to use. The property is really central, just a few minutes walk to the numerous great restaurants. The 'check in / out' service was really efficient.

Parking: lots of questions about this but nowhere to put the info. There is little/no parking in the historic centre, and in summer it is hard/impossible to drive in. In August: it's hard to find anywhere less than 15mins walk away. Off season: park in Remedios (5 mins walk). July/Sep: main carpark, 8 mins walk). No guarantees!

Long unspoiled white-sand beaches of El Palmar are approximately 15 minutes drive from the town, with a variety of restaurants. No intensive developments mar the beauty of these delightful places. Surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing are available.

Nearest airport is Jerez, approximately 55 mins drive. Other options are Gibraltar and Seville, approx 2 hrs. A hire car is a good idea to enjoy the beaches. Parking is normally available on Avenida de los Remedios, about 8 mins walk away, but generally not nearer.

The house is completely central, located within the old walled town of Vejer, and is the perfect base for exploring all the town's tourist attractions on foot, including not least the adjacent church and very nearby castle.

Further Details:

There is a range of local restaurants and bars to explore, all just a short walk away. The market sells fresh local fruit and vegetables and fish, and is less than 5 minutes walk. There are now increasing numbers of deli-style shops, at least one convenience store in Plaza d'España, and several banks. The tourist information centre is 10 minutes walk. If you choose to arrive late on Friday on the Ryanair flight to Jerez, consider the delightful hotel 'Casa de la Califa' in Vejer for a one-night stopover.
