Why Susan & Peter Avenell chose Alt Emporda

We had our villa built to our own specifications and have done many improvements since. We love the Costa Brava for its many sandy beaches, ease of access, the fantastic climate, scenery, mountain and coastal views. Paradise on earth!

Lovely stay at L'Escala

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing stay in L'Escala. The Villa itself was immaculate with everything there we needed. The pool was fabulous it was cleaned and well maintained. The local beaches were great our favourite beach was San Marti. L'Escala was just a short distance away by car and their was lots of nice resturants there. We would recommend this villa and look forward to visiting again. Going home with some wonderful memories.

Pretty property in quiet area, sechluded, private with small pool.

  • 3 of 5

The property is pretty, clean and in a quiet area, walled off so completely private. A walk of about 25 minutes to the nearest shops and half and hour to nearest beach. The pool is well tended, with someone coming in each day, however it is very small, only 7 strokes from end to end. The picture makes it look bigger. There is a caretaker you can call, who is extremely kind and helpful. The Sky tv hadn't been paid for, so we could only get a few free channels like the news. The house very much needs several things to be renewed. The fridge was iced up, with a massive block of ice at the back, it didn't work properly and has needed replacing for some time. Likewise the bedlinen which is rough and old, the mattresses, where you can feel the springs in one of them and the cooker, which only has one working shelf. The other one falls down with anything heavier than bread, but when we put bread on it to bake, it burnt the underside black after a few minutes. The gas barbeque is corroded where the flames come out, so the flames burn the food at the centre and don't cook it at the outer areas. I hate to say anything negative, the owners were very efficient and helpful when we booked, but didn't give any sense that they would replace the fridge, once we said it wasn't working, even when we said we didn't think it was safe and may not keep our food cold in the heat. A maintenance man came to mend the loo seat, which was broken when we arrived, a bolt was missing, so it swung to one side dangerously when sat on and he said the fridge was broken, the gas couldn't circulate and it should be replaced. He had to order the bolt, so it never got fixed in the 2 weeks we were there. I would recommend the property as long as these things were rectified first. I've given it 3 stars on the understanding that things got replaced that were past their best, or broken.

We hired kayaks at L'Estartit and kayaked to some islands where we snorkelled, walked up a small mountain to castell montgri, amazing views, had a day at waterworld, amazing, book online it's cheaper and has special offers, go-Karting at L'escala, great fun, all the beaches are great. Hire bikes at tourist info and cycle on the bike tracks along the coast. Had tapas on the coast in the Old Town, bought and tasted wine at a wine shop in the old town too. Tourist info very helpful

Owner's Response: After such glowing previous reviews, I was surprised to read your review. Regarding the bed we have found a previous guest had turned the mattress over and the memory foam was underneath. All the linen has been replaced. It is not possible to obtain UK TV channels via a satellite dish in many parts of Spain now, including L' Escala. We will steam uk tv channels via the internet for next season. The fridge was not a frost free type, hence the frost at the back, but as the health and safety of our guest's is paramount, we have replaced the fridge. Our previous guest broke the toilet seat but that was fixed before you left. Not many guest bake cakes while on holiday in August but we will look and replace the oven and BBQ where necessary. The pool size for the patio area and garden we feel is correct with dimensions given on the website. Many thanks for your comments.

Fabulous villa with pool; quietly situated.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in August at Villa Gardenia and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

The pool was fantastic and as we have 2 young children (3 and 6) it was the perfect size for us to splash about in - much needed when the mercury is pushing 33 degrees.

It's worth having a rental car as you are situated a short car journey from the beach at Riels.

There are tons of places to visit nearby. One big recommendation is to take a trip inland to Banyoles and have a swim in the lake. Fabulous.

All in all I would highly recommend Villa Gardenia.

Chris Alavoine.

Sizeable well stocked and furnished villa with a lovely pool in a very pleasant area

  • 5 of 5

Everything you need for a lovely holiday is provided with the property, the pool is cleaned and maintained most mornings, clean bed linen and towels are provided and there is a washing machine if you need to refresh them, there is sky TV (although we didn't use it) and a dvd player which we did use to keep the kids amused in the evenings. There is constant hot water and the shower is very good, the kitchen is well stocked with all that you need to cook and eat in if you want, the beaches are lovely, night life in L'escala is excellent, loads of restaurants, bars and shopping, what more can I say? we had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend staying here, the only down side for us was, because the daily temperature never got below 35 degrees we never wanted to walk far so, it was a drive to everywhere we went, shopping, the beach, a bar or restaurant, none are in easy walking distance in the heat, but it never spoiled our holiday

Honeymoon Trip May 2016

  • 4 of 5

The villi is perfect for a stay in L'escala it is a little way from the beach area so is nice and quiet.

Fully fitted kitchen and everything you need be it a couple on holiday or a family. Fred the guy who meets you with the keys is friendly helpful and punctual.

Would love to come back and stay again have given a 4 star rating but if you replace the mattresses/beds we would give 5 stars no problem - mattresses are a little soft for us

Cannot fault anything else pool is great and the chap who cleans it comes before you are even thinking about getting out of bed so doesn't disturb your holiday at all.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to write a review. Yes it is nice and quiet where our villa is, yet not too far from the beach. We particularly ask that the pool is maintained early in the day (usually when you are in bed a sleep) so as not to disturb your privacy whilst on holiday. Regarding the softness or the hardness of the beds, this is always a difficult one to address as it so much depends on what guest's are used to at home. We will look at the bed's and we will replace if required as we aim to give our guest the best possible holiday experience. Many thanks Kind regards Peter and Susan

A Lovely Family Holiday, July 2015

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week at the end of July, there were 6 of us, 2 teenagers, 2 40 somethings & 2 grandparents! The Villa is as described, very clean & well maintained, everything we needed for a family holiday. The pool is a great asset, we were in Spain during a heat wave, so spent a lot of time in the pool. The location is in a very quiet residential area, but only a 20 min walk to the seafront. We hired a car from Girona airport & found the drive to L'Escala very easy. We visited the Dali museum in Figures, definitely worth a visit, as is Girona. Lots of beautiful beaches within easy reach, we also took a boat trip to the Medes Islands, so much to do a week was not long enough. Lots of very good restaurants in the old town & at Riells. Looking forward to staying again
