About the property

Farmhouse near Bensafrim, Lagos, Western Algarve, Portugal - Peaceful location with complete privacy. Equidistantly situated to South/West Coastline and Beaches

Quinta da Escocia is a comfortable, rural farmhouse with private pool, set in its own 100 acres of pine, eucalyptus and cork trees. The garden and surrounding countryside abound with bourganvillia, hisbiscus, oleander, wild flowers and birdlife. This charming, self sufficient farmhouse offers the chance to see real Portugal away from the built-up coastline; with no neighbouring houses you will have complete privacy and seclusion. The house is all on one level and the pool has a lockable gate making it the ideal getaway with small children.

Our lovely maid, Lucillia, comes to the house six mornings a week. She cleans, makes beds and does the laundry. Lucillia lives in the small farming village of Pincho, half a mile away, where her family run a wonderful rustic restaurant and bar. It serves delicious local food which is great value. You can eat in or order in advance to take back to the house.

Our English speaking house manager, Ginny, lives at the bottom of the valley. She owns a riding school so you can easily hire horses to ride around the local hills. She can also advise you on where to hire bicycles. Throughout Spring the surrounding hills are covered with wild flowers offering the perfect setting for relaxing and uplifting walks.

The house is equidistantly situated between both the south and west coasts, with beaches a 20 minutes drive away through stunning scenery. Ginny's son runs a surf school on the West coast so we can provide relevant information should you be interested.

The historic, bustling town of Lagos is a 15 minute drive away. Full of shops, bars and restaurants, this charming town has plenty to do. Odiaxere is a ten minute drive and has a local market, bakery, shops and restaurants.

About The Owner

We live on a farm by the sea in a beautiful corner of South West Scotland. We have owned our house in Portugal since 1985 so it is now truly a second home for both us and our five children. We try to spend as much time there as possible and even after all this time never tire of exploring the Algarve.

Why The Owner chose Bensafrim

We fell for Portugal having been on holiday there and with young children we wanted somewhere to escape to and to enjoy the outdoors with the added bonus of sunshine. Even 25 years ago we felt that the Coastal Strip was overdeveloped, Monchique was too high and too far from the sea so we split the difference and bought a ruined farmhouse in an unspoilt spot between the two. Nowadays we are very grateful for the A22 motorway which has helped a lot by making Faro Airport a genuine 60 minute drive.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We have the choice of the sophisticated South Coast or more rustic West Coast both within easy reach. You can easily organise a lesson or two through our House Manager whose son has a Surf School. Alternatively the House Manager herself has a Riding School at the bottom of our valley where you can go for a gallop around the local countryside! The biggest benefit that our house holds above others is the total peace and tranquility you enjoy whilst staying there. The surrounding hills reminiscent of East Africa abound with flora and fauna. The nearby village of Pincho is still a farming community and now has a rustic restaurant which is run by our Maids Family. Taking a holiday here will show you a side of Portugal which is lost to those visitors who favour the coast.

rural idyll

Nine of us spent a wonderful week in this gorgeous farm house - chilling out by the pool, cooking up bbq's on the beautiful terrace, singing to karaoke in the local restaurant, eating some of the most delicious seafood from local markets and lounging about on the stunning and relatively secluded nearby beaches. The hosts are amazing and so helpful with organising everything from car hire and local knowledge to keeping the house in immaculate condition with the help of the lovely Lucilla. Fantastic value for money and breathtaking private surroundings combine to make this a dream location. Could not recommend Quinta Da Escocia more highly - a truly special and memorable holiday.

Idyllic retreat

The Quinta da Escocia is a beautifully secluded home set amidst undulating hills. The setting is quite stunning and the house itself lovely: plenty of room for all the family and a perfect swimming pool in which to cool off. There are also two fantastic outdoor eating areas.

While the Quinta is hidden away, we were able to drive to a number of excellent local beaches within half an hour, some of which seemed to attract very competent surfers - if that's your thing, and joined a party in the local village (was it a wedding?!) one evening; so there's plenty to do beyond just relax, for those so inclined. There is a large village reachable via a lovely walk through the countryside, NOT on roads (though only 10 mins by car) which provides most modern amenities including a handful of restaurants and bar/cafes.

We found everything as advertised, and Lucilla (the maid) keeps the place very spic and span.

The Quinta's a relatively short and straightforward drive from the airport, yet feels like you're a million miles away once there. Heartily recommended for families, groups and anyone wanting an escape from it all.

Notes on accommodation: An English house manager looks after the house and lives in Bensafrim and is on hand to sort out problems and give advice on most things. We have a folder in the quinta with information. Cot and high chair available through our house manager at a small charge. Swimming pool is 10m x 5m and has a secure fence round it to keep out over enthusiastic toddlers from getting to the pool without being supervised. There is an extensive library to suit all ages. Suitable wheelchair access. House and terrace all on one level. Outside: Large terrace. Two outside eating areas. Stone built BBQ. Lockfast (10x5 metre) pool and surround with ample sun loungers and shade area. Lockfast gate for security for young children. Utility Room: Washing machine and ironing area. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Excellent maid 6 mornings a week (Mon to Sat). All linen and towels supplied and changed every week. Lucilia is an excellent laundress and will cook/babysit by negotiation. Please bring your own beach towels. Other: Dining room to accommodate 10 people, leading into spacious reception area.
