About the property

Cortijo Opazo offers all you could wish for as a holiday destination in terms of peace, tranquillity and high standard of accommodation. The property is situated in the countryside of the high Alpujarras, close to the villages of Pitres, Portugos and Atalbeitar. Set in three acres of land with an exceptional garden it provides the perfect stress free location for relaxing and unwinding. To the front of Cortijo Opazo the land drops away towards the valley of the Rio Trevelez, then rises steeply to the summits of La Corona and El Lujar; whilst behind us the terrain ascends beyond the local villages to the mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The surrounding ancient terraces are populated by goats or planted with olives, almonds and vegetables. Cortijo Opazo has an delightful garden, full of exotic plants, trees and shrubs seldom found in this area, providing you a freedom of space to enjoy as you please. Walking guides, maps and touring information are supplied to ensure you get the most out of your stay.

From the south facing verandah of Cortijo Opazo the entrance to La Corona leads in to an open plan living accommodation. This is a spacious area with a three seater leather sofa, two arm chairs, a large dinning table, four dining chairs, a well stocked bookcase and a log burning stove. There is a small television that receives Spanish channels only but has a CD/DVD player. Games and DVDs also available.

The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering, with a good range of crockery and utensils, a full sized oven, a four ring glass ceramic hob, microwave, toaster and kettle. The kitchen is clean a modern, tiled with tradional design ceramics.

From the kitchen there is a small passage leading to the bathroom and bedroom. The bathroom is equiped with a sink, WC, walk in 'wet room' style walk in shower with an Oxygene power shower head. Shelves, hooks, towel rails, mirror and a wall cupboard are fitted.

The bedroom has a large double bed (200cm x 150 cm), two bedside tables with reading lights, a wardobe and additional hanging space. This is a light and airy room with views south acorss the valley and east towards the rising sun.

Throughout the accommodation the floors have been finished in warm terracota ceramic tiles. There is an underfloor heating system in all areas, the use of which is included in the rental. During most of the year the days are warm enough for t-shirts and light clothing but since the area is mountainous the evenings and early mornings in the cooler months can be chilly and we have found the heating system invaluable. The log burning stove is provided as a cosy luxury and a limited quantity of logs will be supplied on arrival - more can be obtained locally.

La Corona is situated to the front of Cortijo Opazo and has a glorious south facing covered verandah (known locally as a tinao) with expansive views out over the valley of the Rio Trevelez and across the summit of La Corona to the mountains of the Contraviesa. To one side of the verandah there is an open patio for your exclusive use which enjoys sun all day long. Outdoor tables, chairs and sun-loungers allow guests to take full advantage of this splendid location. The private patio area leads on to the delightful communal garden where there is plenty of space for you to find your own secluded corner.

We can supply a cot and a high chairs if reserved in advance. A portable bed suitable for a child can also be placed in the living room. All towels and bedding provided, changed weekly.

Wifi available in the apartment, free of charge.

Although well equipped for self catering we can provide you with home cooked meals if required (24 hours notice needed). Produce from the vegetable garden and our own chickens is usually available.

La Corona is ideal for a couple.

About Robert King

Robert and William live at Cortijo Opazo all year round and spend most of their days either working in the garden, on the vegetable plot or preparing the accommodation for guests. When not doing one of these activities they might be found walking in the valleys and mountains that surround the house with their two dogs, Oska and Ella.

In 2003 they left rewarding jobs in the UK, one as a teacher and the other as a garden designer, and have enjoyed the challenge of creating a life in a new and welcoming country. Now, they can't imagine living anywhere else.

Robert King purchased this apartment in 2002

Why Robert King chose La Taha

The Alpujarras is a very special area that captivates visitors with its charm. When you visit you will quickly understand why we chose to live here. It has a strong and particular cultural identity, the people who live here are proud of their heritage, a heritage that is still strongly in evidence and in daily use. Whilst quite cosmopolitan in terms of the number of different nationalities that live here the Alpujarras is very firmly Spanish and it would be impossible to imagine this ever changing. Tourism is very welcome but it is not an area of dead holiday homes, it is a place where people live, work and enjoy life.

There is everything you need here: food, water, humanity and the beauty of the Sierra Nevada. The decision to live here was a quick and easy one.

What makes this apartment unique

What we enjoy about living at Cortijo Opazo, besides the dramatic views, is the fact that we are situated in the countryside half way between the villages of Pitres and Portugos, being 1.5km from each. As such, we can easily 'pop out' to the shops and enjoy a drink at one of the bars without having to use the car.

Ensuring that our guests have the best possible holiday is how we earn an income. So, whilst making sure visitors have all the privacy they could wish for, we are available to give you any information you may need and generally to make sure the accommodation is in the best order possible. This extends to our garden. We are horticultural enthusiasts and work outside every day to create a very special place for relaxation.

Welcoming tranquil environment with stunning views.

Excellent hosts with all the answers to every enquiry. Accommodation was wonderful, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. It met all expectations. Unfortunately we only got to savour their home cooking on our last night. It was exceptionally good. The location was perfect, although we might try their beach resort next time as this area is also lovely.

Cortijo Opazo

  • 5 of 5

We usually rent a house somewhere quiet to go walking in southern France. Decided to do something different and found Cortijo Opazo on the web.We spent the last two weeks of August in El Lujar and it was wonderful in every way.

The Alpujarra area is really beautiful and the walks are stunning. Most days we did a walk - anything from 2 to 6 hours - with the help of easy route maps provided by our hosts. The walks are varied, peaceful, each with its own charm.

Our apartment was small, pristine and really comfortable - perfect for couples. Outside, our own private courtyard and garden terrace with lovely views.

On five or six occasions we had dinner - interesting. colourful and delicious- prepared and served by our hosts. Speaking of our hosts, they have found a lovely balance of being helpful, charming and discreet.

So if you like ancient villages, rural history, high hills, streams and gorges, mountain paths, flora and fauna, peace and quiet, food and drink, relaxation and a bit of adventure - this is the place.........it really was that good.

Safe Haven

This is our thrid visit and we were not disappointed. A warm welcome, some of the best cooking in the Alpujarras thanks to Rob and William's wonderful meals which are just too delicious. The standard of accomodation and cleanliness is just as good as when we first came and the garden, even in winter, gets better every time we come.

The extra hours of daylight in southern Spain compared the UK make it a perfect winter break and if you are in to walking so much the better.

Owner's Response: It was lovely to see you all once more. January is one of our favourite months here, we tend to be quieter which means we can take advantage of the clear weather and get some work done in the garden. See you again soon, we hope.

Walking: Both properties are supplied with walking guides and maps for your use. We are happy to discuss tailor made walking holidays for small groups of up to 6 people (in 2 double rooms and a twin). Fully catered or part board, lead, or self guided. The main beach at Salobrena is about one hour away. The Costa Tropical is not as intensely developed as other areas of southern Spain and there are a number of less well known bays along protected stretches of coast that we can point you towards.

Malaga is served by many airlines and is about 2hrs by car. Almeria is about 2.5 hours by car. Granada is the closest airport at 1 hour 30 minutes drive and is served by British Airways from London City airport, or by internal Spanish flights. You can reach us via public transport - there are three buses a day from Granada. We will be happy to give advice.

Orgiva is the closest town of any significant size and is about 40 mins away. Local villages of Pitres and Portugos are within walking distance (1.5km) and have a variety of shops, banks, bars and restaurants. The city of Granada is one hour and fifteen minutes by car, but can be accessed by bus. The Sierra Nevada ski slopes are less than 2 hours away. Everything else you could possibly need to enjoy your holiday is on the doorstep.

Further Details:

The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from challenging high level snow line walks to casual meanderings around the valley. Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and still shows many signs of their occupation. Most notably the style of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.

Many people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content simply to relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, paragliding, canyoning, guided walks, cycling, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around including two vegetarian establishments. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there's no need to leave.
