About Clem & Jayne FitzGerald

PRIVATE FAMILY RETREAT

Clem & Jayne FitzGerald purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Clem & Jayne FitzGerald chose Northern Ireland

ITS A TRUE GET-AWAY. WE ALWAYS FEEL PROPERLY RELAXED AFTER WE STAY AT NORTHERN STAR COTTAGE.

What makes this cottage unique

LOCATION IN THE CENTER OF THE CAUSEWAY COAST, ONLY A SHORT WALK FROM THE HARBOUR, CAFE'S AND THE PUB.

VERY, VERY QUIET AND PEACFULL.

Ballintoy harbour is one the great location sets for the SKY TV epic GAME OF THRONES..

Guestbook comments from the owner

After a very long journey from the Southern Hemisphere we were ready for a peaceful weekend to rest up. Northern Star Cottage was perfect, we had such a deep peaceful sleep it was glorious. It was Sunday before we got down to the harbour and started to explore. Its a great place to take in the sea air and the incredible views.

Hope to get back again soon.

Our little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Where to start with this amazing little cottage... We first booked to stay here 3 years ago. From the start clem and Jayne were fantastic and so helpful! We had been to ballintoy several times and had never seen the cottages tucked away. From the minute we arrived we knew we would be back again and again. The cottage has everything you need and more, it makes you realise you do not need all the clutter back home. Breakfast, lunch and bbq's in the garden (weather permitting) and cozy nights infront of the wood burning stove was just perfect. 10 minute walk down to the harbour and beach with the beautiful o'rourke's cafe and the red door at the end of the driveway, As well the the Fullerton arms in the village if you are away to escape cooking you are spoilt for choice. Our daughter enjoyed the body boards and fishing rods and we enjoyed the wine!!! Phone signal may be poor but I actually loved that and my phone stayed off the entire week! We slept better here than we do at home, long lazy days and nights or walks to watch the sunrise or sunset at the beach, it's just heaven.

We loved the northern star cottage and ballintoy harbour so much that we were the first people to get married on the little hidden beach at sandy port in August last year. If it wasn't for this little peace of heaven and having the time to stay here and find this beach we wouldn't have gotten our dream wedding!

Can't wait to August to spend our 1st anniversary in the northern star cottage xx

Owner's Response: Thank you, always super to hear from our guests. At this time of the year we use the quieter time to update and refresh the cottage. Paint brushes, new linens and spring cleans. Its the 'out with the old and in with the new' time of the year. Clem

A not so charming trip back in time.

  • 2 of 5

The cottage is small, cute and old.

Initially the small cute aspect was charming, but fairly quickly the old aspect took over.

Other ratings mention the positives, so I'm going to point out the serious negatives of the cottage.

I suspect that when it was first set up it was probably much better and the owners put in a little extra effort, but it seems like over time they have given up.

We were immediately caught off guard by the fact that there was no phone service at the cottage (3 mobile). This left us completely unable to contact anyone. I understand that it is sometimes charming to be removed from technology, but being there to catch up with a friend in Portrush we were forced to walk down to the harbour to find phone service to make contact. The addition of WiFi would solve this issue.

The next issue was the bed. Wow. That mattress is OLD. That is by far the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. It is completely worn out, sinks right down and all you can feel are springs in your back. We tried sleeping in the bunks, but being a married couple that doesn't exactly fit into our idea of a nice week away. My wife had back pain from it the entire time, and it's continued since leaving. A new mattress really isn't that big of an expense and I felt not replacing it showed the attitude of the owners.

Next was the shower. Old house, zero pressure. Near impossible to do something like wash your hair in. Bad.

The washing machine worked, but the dryer function didn't and the cottage doesn't have the space to hang out clothes. We were lucky no one was staying in the other cottage with the clothes line out the back, though there were no pegs so we couldn't hang up any smaller items anyway. Again, owners attitude if something breaks is clearly to not bother fixing it.

On booking I was sent an email explaining what was available in the cottage and area. I'm not sure when this was last updated, but most of it was no longer applicable it seems and just led to more disappointment.

The bikes mentioned were not available, the 'wee shop' in Ballintoy that is mentioned never once opened leaving us with no easy way to get provisions, nor did the Red Door Café or seemingly anything else in Ballintoy. There were also several mentions of wine available to us in the cottage, including a complimentary bottle on arrival, but that also wasn't there.

Owners seriously need to get this place back up to scratch, because our stay was really unpleasant.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feed back. We do respond to and acknowledge feedback as appropriate. Any relevant issues raised have already been addressed. We want our guests to have a beautiful holiday experience. If our guests have any questions or problems during their stay we offer 2 mobile numbers and an email contact so you are sure to be able to contact us. If there is a problem we will fix it and if it is necessary we will relocated you. Our belief is that your holiday time is important so do contact us while on holiday so that we can assist you. Our devotion to our holiday makers is evidenced in the fifty eight, 4 and 5 star reviews that we have received. Many of our guests re book and refer friends. Regarding telephone, there is a perfect signal on most networks, sorry to hear that there is still a net work with poor local coverage. Mattresses are changed regularly and we deep clean mattresses several times a year. We have now replaced a faulty mattress which has not lived up to the luxury price tag we paid for it. We take a lot of pride in the quality of our linens and the cleanliness of our cottages paying premium prices to our staff to ensure you have a great stay. We do not promote Wifi in this cottage. We do offer addresses for local wifi, one is a cafe only 40 metres away. Yes we feel the charm of being away from constant wifi can make a holiday complete. However for guests who have got to keep continuous wifi connection we do offer an O2 dongle service (advanced booking required) . Remember it is necessary to call us if you need anything and we are always delighted to help you have a great stay on the North Coast.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

As has been said the cottage is small but was fine for us, just two adults and a dog. Had everything we need. Was nice having the bit of garden to sit in when the weather was good and we ate outside at the table.

Great location, can walk to harbour and to excellent pub which again was dog friendly. Fantastic walks nearby.

Ideal location.

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this lovely little cottage. It's location is ideal for exploring the Antrim Coast and it's only ten minutes walk from the beautiful Ballintoy harbour. Right on the Ulster Coastal Walk too.

beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed as a family of 5 ( 2 adults and 3 small children). The cottage had everything we could have needed for the week and although it was tiny it was perfectly formed. We were very lucky with the weather and spent most days outside in the garden walking the short distance to the harbour or the park.
