About the property

Environmentally Aware

Los Olivillos is an organic smallholding perched above Ferreirola with stunning open views of the mountains.Set in a natural habitat of great beauty, the apartments sit in a cozy, quiet, upper part of the property. The garden is lush and shaded in summer. We use toxic-free products to keep the space clean and fresh as a meadow. We try to be as environmentally responsible as we can as sustainable as we manage . The nearby weekly market has some organic products close to 0 milleage! In the Smallholding I share some organic produce from the veg patch. The happy hens provide the omega rich, delicious eggs that I usually share too.

Surrounded by ancient Moorish villages it borders the Sierra Nevada Nature Park and several 800-year-old trails start nearby. La Taha's 7 villages are within walking distance, each offering their local produce, (air cured ham, pottery, colorful cotton rugs, basquetry...), Moorish architecture, warmth and good terraces for free tapas with a view! Local dishes, vegetarian and vegan food can be had in Mecina's L'atelier restaurant,15 minutes walk away. Los Olivillos' female owner delights in offering safe, relaxed accommodation for all types of travellers and visitors. She can be helpful if needed, but will otherwise remain unobtrusive. A basket of seasonal home produce awaits you upon arrival. Your visit helps us keep the smallholding going and take steps to make it more sustainable.

By making booking procedure very simple and easy we make it as easy as we can for our guests from the start.

About property owner

I am just an ordinary person who did ordinary things (in different countries) typical of my generation. Among which is probably having chosen at some point to settle in the countryside to live a simple life close to nature.

property owner purchased this apartment in 1984

Why property owner chose La Taha

I built the house and chose this space for the feel of remotness, solitud and the inmense beauty all arround. In a time when I was travelling or living abroad it provided fresh and renewed energy any time I came back for a time from wherever. For the last some years I have settled here and have created a safe and couzy space for my guests to get in touch with rural life under infinitely spacious blue or starry skies.

I try hard to resist comercialistics pressures from those I am force to use to reach out to guests thereby trying to keep relations as "human" and direct as possible. I guess I loose some by doing it this way but I get the best defenetely!

What makes this apartment unique

Unique benefits? Uninterrupted beauty whichever path one takes. To be as close to intact culture as you can get in an extended area of 7 rural villages that still retain their moorish traits in architecture, food, etc.

To be situated at 70 mnts. drive/walk either from the beach or from the high Sierra Nevada.

A place to return to again and again

  • 5 of 5

We return here again and again. The apartments and gardens offer a taste of paradise. Simple, beautiful and just so peaceful. The surrounding area has much to offer. Small unspoilt villages, charming places to eat, local markets, great walking for all levels. Simply cannot recommend strongly enough.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Alan, for your words of appreciation. It is a pleasure to have your regular visits to Casa Estrella. You leave no foot prints in the area which is greatly appreciated. What you lie behind is good humor, laughter and a charming energy.

Beautiful, comfortable, uplifting.

  • 5 of 5

Estrella is a spacious beautifully furnished 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor with a large living room, a well equipped spacious kitchen, a fantastic balcony with breath taking views and a little garden with a hammock in front of the entrance. There's a good WiFi coverage both inside and outside the apartment. In the hall there's a large book shelf with books in several languages where you can find anything from cooking and travelling to art and philosophy. It will keep you busy during your siestas and secretly make you wish for the rain so that you'd be "forced" to stay inside and read.

The beds are very comfortable to sleep in and you can open the windows (with insect mesh) in different parts of the apartment to get a cool breeze through the bedrooms at night. The area is very quiet and the only sound during the night is the song of a night bird. But when the morning comes, be prepared to listen to a choir of local roosters and a singing peacock.

The balcony is very private and it's a perfect place for having your breakfast, sunbathing or just relaxing with a cold drink. It can get too hot there during the siesta, but in the afternoon it's fine again. On one side of the balcony there is a beautiful blue wisteria that is sometimes also used by the house cats for climbing to the balcony to say hello and check for any new interesting sleeping spots, that could be a towel, a backpack or anything else that looks exciting.

The owner is very welcoming and will make you feel at home at once. During our stay we had several interesting chats and tasted some extraordinarily delicious home made raw food cookies of nuts and fruit with chufa horchata (spiced milk from chufa tubers). We were also welcome to explore the vegetable garden and to use the vegetables, fruit and greens from the garden for our cooking, which led to some unexpected dishes with the newly discovered ingredients. The garden has also plenty of herbs among which we found the sweetest rosemary we've ever tasted.

Besides all the great walks in the area, be sure to check out the restaurants in Mecina (10 min walk), get your drinking water from the naturally carbonated mineral fountain just outside Ferreirola (15 min walk), find the mulberry trees in the area (look for black spots on the ground) and boost your energy with these sweetest berries.

We definitely recommend this accommodation and hope to return again next year.

great fall discoery!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in Los Olivillos in fall. The weather was beautiful the whole time, sunny and warm. The apartment is beautiful, the interior design I loved, it´s rustic and so cosy. The bed is very comfortable, something I find a must when travelling.

The surrounding is gorgeous, so many little towns to explore, both by car and foot. For those who love to hike, this is a paradise.

I fell in love with this place, and hopefully I will return one day.

We have stayed in The Estrella for the past five years, we were completely taken by the whole idea of a smallholding in the Mountains, it is completely out of the way & extremely peaceful. The description describes the place spot on and we have had wonderful times there.

The apartment is fantastic, very spacious for two people, we decided on The Estrella to make use of the balcony, this is brilliant by day and night, we have sunbathed for hours, this year we were watching flocks of Bee Eaters - amazing! and then read and watched shooting stars of an evening. The apartment is in very good clean condition with beautifully ironed white sheets and the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in!

The hammock and splash pool are both a welcome escape from the heat.

The area itself is so peaceful, of an evening you may hear one car go down into the valley and sometimes during the day some Spanish chatter which is not offensive it is just in the background and sounds delightful with the birds and the whole hum of the place.

There are many walks close by without using the car, the scenery is breath taking, some of the walks are hard going especially if you walk in the heat of the day, the zig zag paths seem to go on forever but usually after several hours we manage to find a Bar with beer and tapas, the Bar in Busquistar with the balcony is the best in the area, the walk to this bar can be simple or less simple! You will need a guide book for walks. Take plenty of water and go as early as possible.

The local Bars and Restaurants (all within a 10 minute stroll) are of equal quality and worth a visit, try them all, they are very good.

Surya is a fantastic host, most helpful & friendly. Fresh vegetables are often left on the step without hearing or seeing Surya.

We highly recommend this property to anyone seeking peace & quiet, you will not be disappointed.

A lovely place, a lovely owner

  • 5 of 5

Set in the beautiful Alpujarras district of La Taha, between the villages of Ferreirola and Mecina, this is a delightfully quiet place to visit.

We like it so much that we have been several times, staying mainly in this apartment because it is a bit bigger, and its terrace has the better view. It is plenty large enough for two people. The kitchen is well equipped for a holiday rental, and there is a library in several languages.

There are lovely walks directly from the property without moving the car. be warned, the district is very hilly, all walks include a certain amount of up and down! having said that it is an easy walk to the villages of Mecina and Mecinilla, where there are two very nice bars that serve good food, a hotel that does likewise, and a restaurant that is more haute cuisine (it is run by two French people one of whom is a first-class cook) and is, surprisingly, vegetarian. You can also cook in the apartment. Surya, the lovely owner who lives downstairs, will ply you with fresh vegetables in season, grown on her smallholding that surrounds the house. There is a supermarket in Pitres, a short drive away.

Sitting on the terrace admiring the view, relaxing in the garden under the shady trees, enjoying the peace and quiet, a dip in the plunge pool if it is very hot, an early-morning walk in the hills around, a siesta behind the wooden shutters, a trip to one of the bars ... ah wonderful!

Beautiful peaceful place

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here for several years - it's the sort of place you go back to. In the summer when it's hot the lovely trees give shade and there's always the splash pool if you want to really cool off. The accommodation is simple but the beds are comfortable. There's no TV but there is wifi. Surya is lovely. It's a great place.

Nearest Restaurant
1 Kilometres
Pleasant 10-15 mnts walk; 4 including vegetarian
Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

The perfect place for a quiet retreat, walking in nature, visiting the historical area, taking fantastic walks of any length you may choose, joining in local frequent celebrations, sampling the varied local food and wine or just relaxing reading in your garden hammock. Bird watching is a favorite here. So close to the Sierra Nevada we enjoy frequent visits from eagles that live higher up. One eagle owl nests locally. Some of the birds that you can see here are: black bird, yellow, blue, crested and fire crested tits, corn and rock bunting, goldfinch, greenfinch, house sparrow, Eurasian jay, golden oriol, common chiffchaff, blackcap, Sardinian warbler, song thrush, nightingale, robin, white wagtail, house martin, swallows, European bee-eater, common swift, crossbills, common cuckoo, lesser kestrel, hen harrier, long tailed tit, common quail, red-legged partridge, green woodpecker, magpie and a few others. We have a pair of binoculars in the house for guests.

There are lovely beaches, small coves all along the Granada coast with parking space and small family-run restaurants. There is one nudist beach as well.

Early summer (June to 15th July and the whole month of September) is the best time to enjoy cleaner beaches, tranquility and plenty of space. End of July and August tend to be very busy and crowded.

A car can be rented if you wish to move about very freely in your own time. It is also possible to come without renting a car. A bus runs from Granada to Pitres 3 times a day and twice a day to Ferreirola. The bus runs through most of the villages on its way to and from Granada so one could travel by bus through the area with a certain amount of planning.

Pitres 5kmts by car. 30 mnts. walking up through beautiful scenery. A free bus goes to the weekly market (Fridays) and back 3 hours later. To Granada 1h 15mnts. Coastal area 50 mnts. Orgiva 30 mnts by car is the nearest town with a variety of shops including 4 Health Shops and weekly open market. Busquistar, Portugos, Mecina-Fondales, Mecinilla, Atalbeitar and Fondales are all between 15mnts and 1h walking distance. By car they can be reached in minutes.

Further Details:

The completely private apartments are set in their own lovely gardens amidst traditional terraces with some springs with medicinal properties. A paradise for anyone who loves nature, seeks a retreat, wishes to have good energizing walks, watch birds or just have a dreamy, peaceful time. A delight for painters, nature lovers and serious walkers. The nearby village of Pitres (4km) has a mini super market, chemist, bank, 24-hour health centre and a Friday morning market. Vans selling bread, fish, fruit and vegetables pass on the road below the house frequently. There is a swimming pool at the campsite (4km) with a restaurant and lovely terrace for a full meal or some free "tapas" with a drink. Within 10 mnts walk there are 4 restaurants, both vegetarian and local ones. In nearby villages there is a variety of food on offer. Tapas are especially generous in this area. A 2 or 3 "cañas" (medium beer) with their accompanying free "tapa" could suffice for a light meal. The famous white washed villages of the Alpujarras are all around and offer delightful local pottery and rugs. There is a long established vegetarian/vegan restaurant within easy walking distance. Lately a piano bar opened which is becoming popular with visitors. It often has flamenco nights and other spontaneous musical evenings. In summer there is a variety of classical concerts in the open air in the villages, in the ancient threshing floors as well as in village churches and squares.

The beautiful and peaceful valley of La Taha. During the Moorish rule, the seven villages of La Taha: Atalbeitar, Capilerilla, Ferreirola, Fondales, Mecina, Mecinilla and Pitres were an administrative entity. It is a picturesque place where it feels like time stood still. You can walk from one village to the next without ever stepping on tarmac.
