Farmhouse And Cottage Situated In The Spanish Pyrenees - Cottage (Sleeps 4. 2 Bedrooms)

Overview

Property

Updated: 27-Nov-2016
Traditional Catalan village houses with stunning mountain views

Shown on Trip Advisor as 'excellent' by guests Casa Mauri is impressively situated on a rocky outcrop above the town of Tremp, providing magnificent views of mountains and lakes. Casa Mauri has been renovated to provide modern facilities whilst retaining the original farmhouse character of exposed beams and contrasting stone and white-plastered walls. Both apartments are fully licensed by the tourist board and have passed all health and safety requirements. The region is a wildlife paradise with a wide range of birds, wild flowers and butterflies. It is an ideal place to experience many outdoor adventures. Casa Mauri was featured in Ed Docx's full page article in the Sunday Express travel section of 20 August 2000 and in a 3 page article in Issue 2 (Feb/March 2004) of the magazine 'Spanish Magazine' describing the range of walks in the area around Santa Engracia and featuring a number of colour photos. The perfect 'getaway' holiday.

About the Owner

My name is Jane Newman, I have been a keen climber and walker but have to take life a bit easier now as my knees joints aren't quite what they used to be!

I decided to take over the business so as to be 'my own boss' and get away from the rigours of a nine to five job in the UK (as well as the weather).

Very comfortable accommodation that lacks nothing

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived our stay was perfect. Jane is a great host who takes great pride in showcasing this area .Nothing was too much trouble. Spectacluar sightings of Griffon vultures and many birds of prey from the viewing terrace. Walks for all degrees of fitness and a numerous wild flowers and birds. We would love to return.

Get away from it all in rural Spain

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Casa Mauri was exactly what we needed - a real escape from hectic life! Santa Engracia is a beautiful little village on the edge of a mountain. The area is perfect for walking and exploring the Pyrenees being approx. 1 hour drive from La Val de Boi, Aigüestortes national park and Mont-Rebi gorge - all highly recommended day trips.

The cottage was delightful, very clean and perfect for our needs. Our host couldn't have been more helpful, providing us with information on the local area, walks and daytrips and lending us maps.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Mauri and wouldn't hesitate in returning.

Santa Engracia

  • 4 of 5

It took 20 minutes to travel the 6 winding miles from the main road to cottage - well worth the journey! We have never stayed somewhere so quiet and we live in the countryside! The property was lovely, very clean and well-maintained - there was a nice terrace area which caught the sun most of the day and had loungers as well as a table and chairs. There was no TV, there was WIFI - great for the teenager in the group and a DVD. The modest kitchen had a good supply of utensils and more than enough pots and pans to self cater easily.

Jane was really helpful and informative about the local area and things to do - of which there are plenty. We really enjoyed rafting from Sort; the lake; the excellent local pool at Talarn, would be hard to beat the views; walking and running on the many paths around the village and just sitting in the near silence reading.

We have no hesitation in recommending this cottage as we would love to stay here again.

Owner's Response: Hi Helen, Many thanks for the kind review. Once again sorry re the TV. I did have UK TV but they swapped satellites and now Catalunya is a dead zone! After I bought all new TV's too! Looks like it will have to be Spanish TV from now on. I am getting the guy up from Tremp to sort that out for me. Hope you do make it back! All the best Jane

  • 5 of 5

What a find! beautiful place beautiful location and Jane was so welcoming and helpful. We were impressed in eveyrthing from the abundant utensils in the kitchen to empty cupboards to put food in !! something we have rarely found on our travels. Sitting on the terrace watching the vultures and eagles was amazing. The area is beautiful so much to see and do we will try to return to see more. Really wanted to be selfish and keep this place to ourselves but we had such a lovely week we felt others should experience it too !!!

Where eagles soar

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in Jane's lovely house, situated high on a rocky outcrop. And we did watch eagles and vultures rising on the thermals overhead as we sat on our little terrace. We were able to walk from the house into the surrounding hills and valleys and there is lots to do in the area if you're happy to drive around. We walked high in the Pyrenees, did white water rafting, canyoning and enjoyed the market in the local town, Tremp, as well as swimming in the local lake. Jane is very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and really helpful and friendly. The cottage was very clean with a very well equipped kitchen and plenty of space for three of us. I would recommend this property for anyone who enjoys peace and quiet and outdoor activies like walking and climbing and wants to be in a stunning setting.

Tranquil

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Mauri for a week's climbing trip - it's ideally situated for this. The house was comfortable and well equipped, and the fast wifi broadband was a bonus. What we hadn't expected was the utter peace and tranquillity of the village, which was startling and amazing. Coupled to the fantastic views in every direction, this made the house and village a great place to stay.

Jane, the owner, could not have been more helpful, from the first contact. She is knowledgeable about the local area and the climbing, and offered loans of books, maps and equipment. She even shopped for us so there would be food and wine when we arrived, as we flew in on a Sunday, when all shops were shut!

We will certainly be back, for more climbing or for family holidays.

Location

From the Owner

I moved to Santa Engracia to start a new life and escape the British weather and was drawn to this particular area because of the amazing rock climbing here. I visited the region several times in 2010 before deciding to buy the business off Anne and Mike Harrison in September 2011. The area has the most fantastic limestone gorges which draw climbers from all over the world to climb. The region is a magnet for anyone who loves the outdoors as well as offering geological, ornithological and historical interests. Tremp too is an appealing town with many restaurants and bars and all modern facilities and is a 15 to 20 minute drive away.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : Tremp at 11 Kilometres Nearest Train : Tremp at 10 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Tremp at 11 Kilometres Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

Bird watching and wildlife tours of the local area surrounding Santa Engracia can now be arranged for guests at weekends if you are visiting in May and June . The tour will be approximately 3 hours and will be by a local English speaking Catalan guide who has in depth knowledge of this varied and beautiful environment. The tours will cost 20 euros per person. Below are some photos taken by a guest visiting Casa Mauri last year. Most shots were taken in and around the village.

Coast/Beach:

Swimming and watersports are allowed in the nearby lake (approx 10k).

Travel:

Barcelona airport 2.5 hours drive, Reus airport 2.5 hours, Gerona 3 hrs 15 mins. Other airports within a reasonable driving distance are Toulouse, Perpignan and Zaragoza. A car is essential. Car hire not available in Tremp. NB: Most GPS systems don't recognise that there is a tarmaced road between Tremp and Santa Engracia- but there is. The GPS may direct you Talarn, do not take this road, Santa Engracia is the next turning.

Distances:

Tremp is the nearest town and is 10k away.

Further Details:

The lakes below the village offer swimming and water sports. The small town of Sort (Catalan for luck), to the north of Tremp, is a centre for a range of outdoor sports including white water rafting, kayaking, quad biking, and riding.

The region is ideal walking country. The former owners were keen walkers and have written a guide to walks from the village and around the Tremp valley for the use of guests. The region is home to a wide variety of birds and butterflies, and the wild flowers here and in the Pyrenees are a beauty to behold in the spring time and through to early summer. The Aiguestortes National Park is 1.5 hours drive from the village and the duty free principality of Andorra 2 hours away. The local scenery is stunning with a number of spectacular gorges and dramatic escarpments. The area is a well-known Mecca for rock climbers, Terradets, Collagets, Vilanova de Meia and Santa Linya all within 45 mins.

Catalonia is famous for its Romanesque architecture, churches, castles and towers. In cretaceous times the region bordered the Atlantic and dinosaurs have left their mark in the shores with footprints and large finds of fossilised eggs.

The Catalan people are friendly, helpful and welcoming. Full shopping facilities can be found in Tremp which has a pedestrianised old town with traces of the old town walls and towers and a newer section with a tree lined rambla where cafe tables and chairs are shaded from the sun from spring through to autumn. The market in Tremp is on Monday mornings, with a market in Sort on Tuesday and in La Pobla de Segur on Wednesday. Eating out in the region is very reasonably priced. Typically, a 3 course meal (menu dia) of Catalan specialities including wine costs around 10-12 euros, though there are places where you can eat very well for less. A selection of local tapas also makes a very tasty and filling lunch.

Facilities

From the Owner

The properties location is what visitors are amazed by but hard to do justice to in a short description.High on a rocky promontory it overlooks the region, in particular the Terradets Valley. There is a 300 meter walk up to the property so visitors must be relatively fit and active, however a quad and trailer are used by the owner to transport shopping and luggage to the house. The house itself was restored by Anne and Mike being a traditional old Catalan farmhouse with a walled courtyard. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on one of the houses terraces watching the vultures and birds of prey rise up on the thermals from below the house with views across the Low Pyrenees and the Lakes that surround Tremp. It is a peaceful and tranquil location a perfect getaway!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: All the properties have access to WiFi broadband internet. Pets are accepted. Santa Engracia is situated 10km from the main road and is reached via a tarmac country road that climbs up to the village. Access to the village houses is pedestrianised. Parking is off-road at the entrance to the village. There is then a 300m walk uphill along what was originally a mule track but is now a wide paved street. The owner lives adjacent to the properties and can help you with your luggage if arriving at a reasonable hour (the owner has a small quad bike with trailer for transporting luggage to the house). She will be available to give help and advice at any time. The properties were specifically renovated and equipped for holiday rentals. The owner is registered with and approved by the Catalan authorities. Although the 2 properties are situated around the same courtyard they are completely independent. The farmhouse faces away from the cottage and no noise is transmitted between the two. Outside: A picturesque walled courtyard is shared access to both properties with flowers, grapevine and bench. Barbecue available. The village church (no bells) is adjacent to the courtyard and from here, near the pinnacle of the outcrop, is a magnificent 360° view. On the rock is a Romanesque tower and a series of dinosaur footprints.
