About the property

Shown on Trip Advisor as 'excellent' by guests Casa Mauri is impressively situated on a rocky outcrop above the town of Tremp, providing magnificent views of mountains and lakes. Casa Mauri has been renovated to provide modern facilities whilst retaining the original farmhouse character of exposed beams and contrasting stone and white-plastered walls. Both apartments are fully licensed by the tourist board and have passed all health and safety requirements. The region is a wildlife paradise with a wide range of birds, wild flowers and butterflies. It is an ideal place to experience many outdoor adventures. Casa Mauri was featured in Ed Docx's full page article in the Sunday Express travel section of 20 August 2000 and in a 3 page article in Issue 2 (Feb/March 2004) of the magazine 'Spanish Magazine' describing the range of walks in the area around Santa Engracia and featuring a number of colour photos. The perfect 'getaway' holiday.

About Jane Newman

My name is Jane Newman, I have been a keen climber and walker but have to take life a bit easier now as my knees joints aren't quite what they used to be!

I decided to take over the business so as to be 'my own boss' and get away from the rigours of a nine to five job in the UK (as well as the weather).

Jane Newman purchased this farmhouse in 2011

Why Jane Newman chose Tremp

I moved to Santa Engracia to start a new life and escape the British weather and was drawn to this particular area because of the amazing rock climbing here. I visited the region several times in 2010 before deciding to buy the business off Anne and Mike Harrison in September 2011. The area has the most fantastic limestone gorges which draw climbers from all over the world to climb. The region is a magnet for anyone who loves the outdoors as well as offering geological, ornithological and historical interests.

Tremp too is an appealing town with many restaurants and bars and all modern facilities and is a 15 to 20 minute drive away.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The properties location is what visitors are amazed by but hard to do justice to in a short description.High on a rocky promontory it overlooks the region, in particular the Terradets Valley. There is a 300 meter walk up to the property so visitors must be relatively fit and active, however a quad and trailer are used by the owner to transport shopping and luggage to the house. The house itself was restored by Anne and Mike being a traditional old Catalan farmhouse with a walled courtyard.

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on one of the houses terraces watching the vultures and birds of prey rise up on the thermals from below the house with views across the Low Pyrenees and the Lakes that surround Tremp. It is a peaceful and tranquil location a perfect getaway!

Guestbook comments from the manager

"An excellent week in superb accommodation. We have been impressed everywhere we have visited by the scenery, wildlife and tranquility. Time for action (white-water rafting, swimming, walking etc.) as well as 'chill-out' relaxation time- great!"

"A wonderful week in a wonderful place. Perfect weather, fantastic walks (whatever you do don't miss the Parc Nacional de Aiguestortes) and - silence! We hope you enjoy the setting and countryside as much as we did. We have still only scratched the surface which hopefully means a return visit."

Special interest holidays:

Bird watching and wildlife tours of the local area surrounding Santa Engracia can now be arranged for guests at weekends if you are visiting in May and June . The tour will be approximately 3 hours and will be by a local English speaking Catalan guide who has in depth knowledge of this varied and beautiful environment. The tours will cost 20 euros per person. Below are some photos taken by a guest visiting Casa Mauri last year. Most shots were taken in and around the village.

Swimming and watersports are allowed in the nearby lake (approx 10k).

Barcelona airport 2.5 hours drive, Reus airport 2.5 hours, Gerona 3 hrs 15 mins. Other airports within a reasonable driving distance are Toulouse, Perpignan and Zaragoza. A car is essential. Car hire not available in Tremp. NB: Most GPS systems don't recognise that there is a tarmaced road between Tremp and Santa Engracia- but there is. The GPS may direct you Talarn, do not take this road, Santa Engracia is the next turning.

Tremp is the nearest town and is 10k away.

Further Details:

The lakes below the village offer swimming and water sports. The small town of Sort (Catalan for luck), to the north of Tremp, is a centre for a range of outdoor sports including white water rafting, kayaking, quad biking, and riding.

The region is ideal walking country. The former owners were keen walkers and have written a guide to walks from the village and around the Tremp valley for the use of guests. The region is home to a wide variety of birds and butterflies, and the wild flowers here and in the Pyrenees are a beauty to behold in the spring time and through to early summer. The Aiguestortes National Park is 1.5 hours drive from the village and the duty free principality of Andorra 2 hours away. The local scenery is stunning with a number of spectacular gorges and dramatic escarpments. The area is a well-known Mecca for rock climbers, Terradets, Collagets, Vilanova de Meia and Santa Linya all within 45 mins.

Catalonia is famous for its Romanesque architecture, churches, castles and towers. In cretaceous times the region bordered the Atlantic and dinosaurs have left their mark in the shores with footprints and large finds of fossilised eggs.

The Catalan people are friendly, helpful and welcoming. Full shopping facilities can be found in Tremp which has a pedestrianised old town with traces of the old town walls and towers and a newer section with a tree lined rambla where cafe tables and chairs are shaded from the sun from spring through to autumn. The market in Tremp is on Monday mornings, with a market in Sort on Tuesday and in La Pobla de Segur on Wednesday. Eating out in the region is very reasonably priced. Typically, a 3 course meal (menu dia) of Catalan specialities including wine costs around 10-12 euros, though there are places where you can eat very well for less. A selection of local tapas also makes a very tasty and filling lunch.

Notes on accommodation: All the properties have access to WiFi broadband internet. Pets are accepted. Santa Engracia is situated 10km from the main road and is reached via a tarmac country road that climbs up to the village. Access to the village houses is pedestrianised. Parking is off-road at the entrance to the village. There is then a 300m walk uphill along what was originally a mule track but is now a wide paved street. The owner lives adjacent to the properties and can help you with your luggage if arriving at a reasonable hour (the owner has a small quad bike with trailer for transporting luggage to the house). She will be available to give help and advice at any time. The properties were specifically renovated and equipped for holiday rentals. The owner is registered with and approved by the Catalan authorities. Although the 2 properties are situated around the same courtyard they are completely independent. The farmhouse faces away from the cottage and no noise is transmitted between the two. Outside: A picturesque walled courtyard is shared access to both properties with flowers, grapevine and bench. Barbecue available. The village church (no bells) is adjacent to the courtyard and from here, near the pinnacle of the outcrop, is a magnificent 360° view. On the rock is a Romanesque tower and a series of dinosaur footprints.

Cloud-top hideaway in the Catalan Pyrenees.

  • 5 of 5

This rustic paradise perfectly suited our need for a nature holiday with a fitness component, tucked away in a farming community which spoke Catalan and some Spanish only, which exercised our language abilities!Very comfortable and spotlessly clean, the accommodation suited us as a couple and and our family, being close to a town and pre-historic and wilderness attractions.Personally, we'll be telling all our walking friends about this one!

The best views and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

The property was quirky, welcoming and so much bigger than we were expecting, with a veranda overlooking the mountains. We had a wonderful 4nights there, while on a motor bike touring holiday. The views are beautiful, with a real feel of relaxation, which was perfect for us. The whole place was very clean, with everything you could need for self catering. Jane was lovely with a wealth of information on the local area.

Casa Mauri - a remote paradise.

  • 4 of 5

This was our second visit to Casa Mauri in the remote small Catalan settlement of Santa Engracia following an enjoyable week spent there in June 2013. The location was perfect being remote from the nearest large settlement in Tremp, but still suitably located for the convenience of shopping facilities of this small town. The accommodation was spacious, clean, and well furnished + contained a very big fridge essential for storing cool drinks and food >> It was the perfect base for an independent wildlife holiday in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees. The setting is on a rocky outcrop with spectacular views from the balcony of vultures and other smaller birds performing aerobatics in the valley below. The sight of the sun going down below the horizon at dusk whilst catching moths and drinking wine was therapeutic in this peaceful setting. We visited many excellent unspoilt sites within an hour's drive of Casa Mauri that provide natural habitats to observe and photograph a variety of butterflies, birds and flora.

Communications with the owner and administration of the booking were very good and we received plenty of help and useful advise before we arrived at Casa Mauri. During our stay, the owner was always easily contactable to provide for any problem arising, help or advise required during our visit. The home cooking venture also went down well with those wishing to experience Catalan cuisine.

All in all, a most enjoyable week in the Spanish Pyrenees with plenty of sunshine and wildlife observed during our stay. I would recommend the accommodation to anybody looking for a suitable base for an independent wildlife holiday in this area.

Excellent venue

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the farmhouse at Casa Mauri for two weeks with a group of friends who hired adjoining accommodation. Jane - the owner - is very friendly, very welcoming and very helpful. We had a wonderful time. The accommodation is excellent in terms of both quality and value. The hill-top setting of the village is idyllic and the views from the terrace are the best I have ever experienced. As a base of families wanting a relaxing time, adventure seekers (we were there for the rock climbing in the region), or for sightseeing, the venue is ideal. It is only about 15 minutes' drive into Tremp, which has many amenities. The village location is sublime. There are signed walks from the village into the hills and down to a stream that has pools in which you can swim (crystal clear water). We will be going back. Highly recommended.

The Farmhouse at Casa Mauri was a wonderful place to say. A fantastic location with unforgettable views - vultures, red kits added to the scenery. Plus the accommodation itself was great - very comfortable with everything you need for a holiday - including a sunny terrace. Great to share with friends staying in the other properties at Casa Mauri as the courtyard was a social place to hang out. Really useful advice from the owner on days out / places to visit. Don't all book at once, we want to come back!!

Mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Mauri the last week in October with our 3 teenage children

It really is a stunning location perched on a rocky outcrop in the village of Santa Engracia. Our balcony view looked down the valley and each morning while eating breakfast we would watch the vultures soaring on the thermals below us.The house was perfect for us and wifi meant teenagers were also kept happy

Walks from the house can take you up into the mountains or along Oak wooded valleys to secluded villages

Further afield the high Pyrenees ,lakes and gorges wait to be explored

Jane is very welcoming and a font of local knowledge

The weather was a perfect 20 C for walking in late October

If you love the outdoors and want a get away from it all house, this is the place for you
