Cottage near Castaras, Central Alpujarras, Andalucia, Spain - Peaceful And Secluded Location, Ideal For Walkers And Birdwatchers

'El Cortijillo' is situated in a secluded valley, down a steep track, below the small mountain village of Castaras (800 metres alt), in the Central Alpujarra. The house consists of 2 bedrooms, a double and a twin, both have ample storage facilities. A nicely sized, well equiped Kitchen\Diner is open plan incorporating a Lounge area with 3 seater and 2 seater settees. The Bathroom consists of shower unit, bidet, washbasin and WC. El Cortijillo remains cool throughout the day and a gentle breeze can reduce the heat at night. We provide games, a CD Player and CDs with a selection of different artists, an excellent variety of books including walking guides and history of the area. Directly outside the front door is a good sized and shaded patio area with table and chairs and a Gas BBQ, leading from this is a large play area which used to be the 'threshing circle'. The Private Pool is oval shaped, the deep end is less than 6ft and entry and exit is via wide concrete steps in the shallow end. The views from El Cortijillo are panoramic looking both down the valley to the Contraviesa and towards the village of Castaras. We bought the property in November 2011, having seen it we knew we had to buy it, we sold up in the UK and have not looked back. We live in a large Cortijo which partly consists of the ruins of a Mill dating back to 1750. Amongst the 39 acres we grow Almonds, Olives, Figs and are pretty much self sufficient in relation to fruit and vegetables. We keep Chickens and eggs are generally available. There is only one track down to us so there is no passing traffic and we are surrounded by miles and miles of unspoilt countryside. Although we live within the same grounds we respect peoples privacy but should you wish to join us for a glass of local wine we are always glad to share our experiences of the area and to listen to details of your day. The beauty of living here is the seclusion where you can hear birdsong and the stream gently meandering through the valley, at night there is no light pollution making it excellent for star gazing.

We are Nigel & Louise and are both retired from working within the public sector in the UK, we live here at the Rambla permanently. We work within the land, harvesting Almonds and Olives, we live completely off grid using hydropower, wind and solar for our energy requirements.

Notes on accommodation: The stone built cottage has been recently renovated and extended to a high standard and offers beautiful views down the valley. The accommodation is light and spacious(100sqm), and well insulated. Main lighting runs on solar power (12V), although there is a 220v socket powered by water turbine. A CD stereo player is provided. Internet access is available upon request. Outside: The house is situated on a terrace of almond and fruit trees, with olive trees on the terraces to the rear. Patio doors lead from the kitchen to a paved and shaded patio area. To one side is a traditional stone threshing circle; to the other, the pool and lawn. The oval pool (8x6m) is surrounded by a sun terrace. Sunloungers, outdoor table and chairs and gas barbecue are provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen, including pool towels, are supplied and will be changed weekly. A laundry and cleaning service can be arranged.

Excellent rural retreat

We had a great stay in Louise and Nigel's lovely cottage. The road to the cottage is very steep but my husband was an expert by the end of our stay. The cottage itself was immaculate and had everything we needed for our holiday. The pool was fabulous and our two boys loved playing in it. Louise and Nigel were perfect hosts and Louise very kindly made our youngest son a birthday cake which was delicious. The weather was very hot so this did limit our activities somewhat but in cooler weather there would be some great walks to do. We visited Granada for the day and enjoyed the history. We also had a morning in Cadiar and an afternoon in Trevelez. If you are looking for a week of tranquility then this is the place for you.

A week of Sundays...

This is the perfect location for an utterly relaxing getaway! The cottage, its garden and private pool are very well equipped and maintained and the location is breathtaking. As a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers) we had a fabulous week enjoying the pool (a lot!), watching the swallows, bats and geckos and stars, walking in the nearby countryside, visiting local towns and villages and truly relaxing. Nigel and Louise are perfect hosts and their hospitality and local knowledge made the week all the more special. We highly recommend this holiday gem.

A piece of paradise on earth

If you are looking for total peace, relaxation and seclusion - you will find it here. The track to the property is a shock to start with and takes a bit of getting used to but it's worth it for the beautiful cortillijo waiting for you at the end. This is a stunning part of Spain and being off grid presented no problem at all.

Nigel and Lou have thought of everything and are fantastic hosts - very welcoming and on hand with any advice on the local area if needed. We will miss the stunning blue skies, watching the amazing swifts and bats and cooling down in the lovely pool. We did 2-3 walks and the views are stunning but probably too hot at this time of year to really go far. The local people are very friendly and welcoming and whilst it's mostly Spanish speaking only - it's not difficult to get by. We will miss the lovely tapas that tend to come out with your round of drinks. Prices in shops and restaurants are incredibly cheap as well. Our favourite places were Bercheles, Juviles and Trevelez but we also loved the little bar in Nieles - it's basic and great for a cold drink and tapas as there isn't really a menu - just whatever Carlos has - but the views from the terrace are great and Carlos is very friendly - even though we couldn't understand all as he only speaks Spanish. We also drove to Granada for the day - took around 2 hours - was very easy and the parking by the Alhambra straight forward.

The Alhambra was amazing and a bargain at 15 euros per head (book in advance or you'll spend a long time queuing).

We loved our time here and felt very lucky to have experienced it.

Secluded, relaxing hideaway

El Cortijillo is a charming secluded cottage surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. The property is spacious, cool and comfortable and the pool area bathed in sunshine throughout the day, at least it was the week I was there.

The key selling point of El Cortijillo is its seclusion and the rare opportunity to get away from it all. Other than the welcome sounds of nature you will not be disturbed and you can easily feel like you're the only person around for miles.

Louise and Nigel are truly wonderful hosts whose approach is genuine and friendly. It was fascinating to hear their story and plans for off grid living. I was made to feel very welcome and would like to thank them for their exceptional hospitality.

The cottage is accessible via a winding mountain track which is tricky to navigate at first, but you do get used to it after a couple of trips. A 4x4 would be ideal but I and others have managed with standard small cars and the effort is very much worth it.

I tend not to return to holiday locations, there's so much world to see after all, but if I wanted another chance to completely escape I can see myself making an exception with El Cortijillo.

A welcoming cottage in a peaceful valley

Quiet and secluded amidst almond trees, this is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the beautiful Alpujarras hills. The owners, Louise and Nigel, are very kind and helpful, and the house is spacious and comfortable. A fine mesh over the windows means that they can be wide open at night and we slept really well on good beds. A most attractive garden with excellent loungers draws you back after walks in the hills.

Another Amazing Relaxing stay

This is our third visit to this hidden paradise (please see our other reviews), if you find somewhere you love then why go anywhere else.

El Cortijillo is a spacious, well presented, well equipped, clean property with a pool that is cleaned every other day by the hosts. A useful folder at hand with lots of local information.

Fantastic hosts who are very welcoming and helpful, who make a mean paella, fresh grown vegetables, olives and almonds off their own land and also with advice on where to go, good traditional restaurants, local bars with good tapas.

Lovely mountain walks, seeing nature at its best, a new family of swallows that have returned to the nest above the patio, birds of prey flying in the sky, bats skimming the pool in the evening, the tranquil sound of the stream and crickets in the evening.

If you want a relaxing, lazy, sun drenched holiday in beautiful location then look no more, it is here!

The coast is 1.5 hours away at Salobrena/Motril.


Granada airport 1 hour 30 mins drive. Malaga and Almeria airports are both 2 hours 30 mins drive. Car hire is available at the airports.


Granada - 1.5 hours.

Orgiva - 50 minutes.

Cadiar - 35 minutes.

Trevelez (highest inhabited village in Europe outside of the Alps) 30 minutes.

The mountain village of Castaras is situated in the central Alpujarras, offering access to both the less touristically explored central and eastern villages, as well as the more well known Orgiva area. The village is small, and at present, the only amenities are two bars and pharmacy, although bakers vans pass by daily, and other mobile stores come on a weekly basis. The nearest shops and restaurants are 30 mins drive away. 'El Cortijillo' is situated 10 minutes by car from the village. Part of this distance consists of unmade up track (approx 1500m). The owners live across the stream from 'El Cortijillo'.
