Cottage near Castaras, Central Alpujarras, Andalucia, Spain - Peaceful And Secluded Location, Ideal For Walkers And Birdwatchers

'El Cortijillo' is situated in a secluded valley, down a steep track, below the small mountain village of Castaras (800 metres alt), in the Central Alpujarra. The house consists of 2 bedrooms, a double and a twin, both have ample storage facilities. A nicely sized, well equiped Kitchen\Diner is open plan incorporating a Lounge area with 3 seater and 2 seater settees. The Bathroom consists of shower unit, bidet, washbasin and WC. El Cortijillo remains cool throughout the day and a gentle breeze can reduce the heat at night. We provide games, a CD Player and CDs with a selection of different artists, an excellent variety of books including walking guides and history of the area. Directly outside the front door is a good sized and shaded patio area with table and chairs and a Gas BBQ, leading from this is a large play area which used to be the 'threshing circle'. The Private Pool is oval shaped, the deep end is less than 6ft and entry and exit is via wide concrete steps in the shallow end. The views from El Cortijillo are panoramic looking both down the valley to the Contraviesa and towards the village of Castaras. We bought the property in November 2011, having seen it we knew we had to buy it, we sold up in the UK and have not looked back. We live in a large Cortijo which partly consists of the ruins of a Mill dating back to 1750. Amongst the 39 acres we grow Almonds, Olives, Figs and are pretty much self sufficient in relation to fruit and vegetables. We keep Chickens and eggs are generally available. There is only one track down to us so there is no passing traffic and we are surrounded by miles and miles of unspoilt countryside. Although we live within the same grounds we respect peoples privacy but should you wish to join us for a glass of local wine we are always glad to share our experiences of the area and to listen to details of your day. The beauty of living here is the seclusion where you can hear birdsong and the stream gently meandering through the valley, at night there is no light pollution making it excellent for star gazing.

A welcoming cottage in a peaceful valley

Quiet and secluded amidst almond trees, this is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the beautiful Alpujarras hills. The owners, Louise and Nigel, are very kind and helpful, and the house is spacious and comfortable. A fine mesh over the windows means that they can be wide open at night and we slept really well on good beds. A most attractive garden with excellent loungers draws you back after walks in the hills.

Another Amazing Relaxing stay

This is our third visit to this hidden paradise (please see our other reviews), if you find somewhere you love then why go anywhere else.

El Cortijillo is a spacious, well presented, well equipped, clean property with a pool that is cleaned every other day by the hosts. A useful folder at hand with lots of local information.

Fantastic hosts who are very welcoming and helpful, who make a mean paella, fresh grown vegetables, olives and almonds off their own land and also with advice on where to go, good traditional restaurants, local bars with good tapas.

Lovely mountain walks, seeing nature at its best, a new family of swallows that have returned to the nest above the patio, birds of prey flying in the sky, bats skimming the pool in the evening, the tranquil sound of the stream and crickets in the evening.

If you want a relaxing, lazy, sun drenched holiday in beautiful location then look no more, it is here!

Lovely accommodation in a beautiful setting

Wow, what a place!! El Cortijillo is the perfect place to stay if you want peace, tranquillity and complete relaxation.

Inside the property it is well equipped with everything you need to make your holiday stress and hassle free. It's spacious, comfortable and very clean, there were only two of us, but it would be excellent for 4 as well.

Outside, well, fantastic views, very peaceful and you can totally unwind just listening to the birds, crickets, occasional goat bell and the stream trickling through the valley. The pool is the perfect size to cool down but also actually swim too.

The property is well located in the Central Alpujarra region, which is a beautiful part of Spain, and it's central location makes it an ideal base to explore the region. That's if you can drag yourself away from El Cortijillo of course!! It's an easy two hour drive from Malaga airport with excellent written directions from Nigel & Louise, was very easy to find.

Nigel and Louise couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming and are on hand if you need them, however they also totally respect your privacy and do not disturb you.

This is our third time visiting the Alpujarra region and we have always moved to different properties each year, but we will have great difficulty in finding a better place to stay than El Cortijillo -so we will be back next year! We've been home a few days and missing the place!

Secluded relaxation

For anyone who likes peaceful seclusion in the countryside this is a brilliant place to stay. The house is fantastically situated in a mountain valley at altitude, with absolutely nothing to disturb the calm. Beautiful scenery all around. The only sounds were from bird song, water rushing in the stream and the wind in the trees.

A great place for discovering nature and learning about the local history.

We divided our time between walking in the hills and relaxing by the pool.

The house was clean, well-maintained and spacious inside, with everything we needed; the wood-burning stove was particularly appreciated in the chilly evenings of early spring!

The owners Nigel and Louise were welcoming and helpful, always friendly without imposing at all.

If you want to go somewhere with lots of restaurants and nightlife, forget it! But if you like a holiday well off the beaten track, this is the place for you.

Great scenic mountain retreat

This lovely secluded cottage with pool was perfect for my son and I in a scenic mountain retreat located near the village of Castaras and had all the essentials for a relaxing and peaceful one-week stay in the warm sunshine. The owners, Nigel and Louise, were very kind and helpful hosts based in their own large cortijo nearby. Great location for nature lovers and walkers.

A perfect mountain hideaway

This was a holiday we will remember for a long time. A pretty and comfortable house in a beautiful location, with hosts who could not have been more discreet, friendly and helpful (Nigel drove us to the local hospital and stayed with us for three hours when our daughter was taken ill one evening, for which I will be forever grateful). Sitting by the lovely pool looking at the mountains, walking out in the early morning to spot the golden orioles, watching bats and salamanders at night, sleeping with the windows wide open, siestas on the terrace, walking in the magnificent national park, exploring the little white villages - we don't just want to come back on holiday, we want to live here!

The coast is 1.5 hours away at Salobrena/Motril.


Granada airport 1 hour 30 mins drive. Malaga and Almeria airports are both 2 hours 30 mins drive. Car hire is available at the airports.


Granada - 1.5 hours.

Orgiva - 50 minutes.

Cadiar - 35 minutes.

Trevelez (highest inhabited village in Europe outside of the Alps) 30 minutes.

The mountain village of Castaras is situated in the central Alpujarras, offering access to both the less touristically explored central and eastern villages, as well as the more well known Orgiva area. The village is small, and at present, the only amenities are two bars and pharmacy, although bakers vans pass by daily, and other mobile stores come on a weekly basis. The nearest shops and restaurants are 30 mins drive away. 'El Cortijillo' is situated 10 minutes by car from the village. Part of this distance consists of unmade up track (approx 1500m). The owners live across the stream from 'El Cortijillo'.

  • Notes on accommodation: The stone built cottage has been recently renovated and extended to a high standard and offers beautiful views down the valley. The accommodation is light and spacious(100sqm), and well insulated. Main lighting runs on solar power (12V), although there is a 220v socket powered by water turbine. A CD stereo player is provided. Internet access is available upon request. Outside: The house is situated on a terrace of almond and fruit trees, with olive trees on the terraces to the rear. Patio doors lead from the kitchen to a paved and shaded patio area. To one side is a traditional stone threshing circle; to the other, the pool and lawn. The oval pool (8x6m) is surrounded by a sun terrace. Sunloungers, outdoor table and chairs and gas barbecue are provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen, including pool towels, are supplied and will be changed weekly. A laundry and cleaning service can be arranged.
