About Joan Murray

My main criteria is for guests to relax, very easy going atmosphere, but high standards as far as accommodation is concerned, friends welcome to come and visit. You are totally private in the cottage, but have the use of lawn and pool, at all times, which are both large! It has been likened by guests to renting a large villa. I always put in a large welcome pack, with wine and beer, so no shopping when you first arrive. There are wonderful simple fish/meat restaurants in Moncarapacho. And one superb restaurant. Antonio's.

Eastern Algarve is totally unspoiled, and long may it stay that way. Beaches unspoilt and even in August, walk about 10 minutes along the beach, and you are on your own. There are small island, along the coast. Small ferries take you there. I just want you to go home with your batteries charged.

Hope to see you

Joan

Why Joan Murray chose Olhao region

We bought a complete hilltop and built the villa and cottage. It has a panoramic view of the Ocean from Spain to Faro. These sites are no longer available. Not boasting but it is completely unique.

What makes this cottage unique

Swimming pool, lots of areas to relax. Only one other villa, on the hill, which you cannot see, because of loads of trees. More and more people seem to be coming out, and liking 'no clothes' bathing.... No it is not a nudist camp! Relaxing is everything, however you want to do it. No music or loud music, it is entirely down to you.

A wonderful break with extra wonderfulness

  • 5 of 5

We arrived after a short and easy drive from Faro to charming, spotless, well equipped accommodation, more spacious than I had imagined and a magnificent pool of a very swimmable size. Joan was the perfect host with exactly the right amount of chat and discretion, delicious fresh orange juice, avocado mousse and real mayonnaise always available, and the option to enjoy 'Joans Bar'.As the week went on, a well timed Campari or two by the pool with Joan and her family of cats and dogs, meant I felt totally at home by the end of my stay, and would still be there now if not for other pesky guests wanting to stay there too. It was my first visit to Portugal and hopefully won't be the last.

Thank you Joan. You are a legend.

Owner's Response: Jill what a wonderful review.......do I really deserve that! You rented the cottage and the en-suite bedroom/bathroom. Which really worked well for you. You were such a fun person to have staying, and we did have lots of fun. I know you will come back in the future. Hopefully in 2018. Have a wonderful summer, and enjoy the good weather you have been having. COME BACK ASAP 🍾🍾🍾😎😎

A remarkable place for our first visit to Portugal

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 12-day winter break in March 2017 (11-23rd) on this hill property overlooking Moncarapacho.

Well equipped and very comfortable with a really good 6ft Bed, enormous covered and open areas for lounging and barbeques and use of the good sized pool.

Wonderful views, lovely rural area, with really interesting and historic little towns and fabulous beaches; And a great Hostess: Joan Graham.

Nearby Motorway provides rapid access to the area, or you can use the country roads. Secure parking was welcome as was the English TV and good supply of DvD's.

This is a Gem and we are going back.

Jim & Barbara Murray (York).

Amazing stay in the Algarve

  • 5 of 5

You can say that we were absolutely blown away by this stay @Joan. You did a good job Joan!! I think you know what we mean ... ;-) We felt very welcome from the moment we entered your beautiful and cosy little house. It started wit a refrigerator wich was full of nice goodies such as home made pate, avocado mousse, almonds, bread wine etc etc. The location is just outside Moncarapacho so its peaceful and its a short trip to several lovely places like Fuseta en Tavira. We had the pleasure of meeting you and some of your friends and had a lovely evening. We laughed a lot, had nice tapas en drank good wine and a very strong Pimms. We always felt enough privacy wich was very nice. We hope to come back again and visit you. Thanks a lot for a very nice stay. Marieke and Rob

Return To Our Holiday Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We're beginning to lose count of the number of times we have returned to this holiday haven! Everything about the cottage is just perfect with everything you could wish for in this cosy cottage for two - there's even a TV with UK channels (though why anyone would want to watch TV when you have such a beautiful hillside setting to enjoy is beyond us) and Wi-Fi. The tasty Welcome Pack that Joan (the perfect host) provides means that you don't even have to leave the cottage for the first couple of days so you can immediately start to unwind and relax by the wonderful pool and enjoy the lovely peaceful gardens. When you are ready to explore it's just a few minutes drive to Moncarapacho which has a range of good restaurants or travel a couple of miles further to Fuseta with its great seafood eateries - the cottage is a great base for exploring the pretty villages and towns of the eastern Algarve.

The only problem with this place is having to leave at the end of your stay - it never gets any easier to drive away and we can't wait to return in July.

Owner's Response: My lovely now very firm young friends, back, yet again. You always make the best of the time when you are here. There is little else I can say......but thanks for a glowing review, and never let me become complacent, I just love what I do, and I am so thrilled I have seven repeats this summer, I must be doing something right! But my lovely people you are the ones that come back consistently, 10th year this year. Look forward to July......beijinhos

A cosy winter hideaway

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing view! A great place to relax when we wanted to (huge bed) and a brilliant stay for exploring, too. The coast has birdlife to die for and the motorway linked up easily to Spain and along the Portuguese coast. I even played golf (Andy liked the course not that far from the house). Great meals out (thanks for the tips, Joan!) And although it's self-catering accommodation, the food on arrival didn't make it feel like it. I'm still after the pate recipe! Thanks for a wonderful stay, Joan.

Owner's Response: You were very intrepid travelers and went on trips up into the hills, that I did not know existed. The bird life is amazing down on Ria Formosa. And as you said to me the beaches are empty....great for walking. Great that you say you are coming back for 2 weeks next year. You are very welcome

A bit surprised by the distance from town and the small size of the unit

  • 3 of 5

View was stunning but wouldn't rely on TV or internet access. The internet access including TV is dated to say the least. Unit is quite small and very cluttered. On the positive side cooking facilities are exceptional Overall we enjoyed the place and Joan is very hospitable and a very nice lady

Owner's Response: Hello Nicole ..... let's start with the distance from Moncarapacho 10 minutes in a car, and I am sorry you found the cottage too small, (I don't usually have any complaints, as you can see by all my 5* reviews, so it is good for me!) unfortunately I cannot change the shape of the cottage. I am glad you enjoyed the cooking facilities. It was very unfortunate I was ill while you were here, otherwise I would have entertained you far more. Hope you are enjoying the rest of your time in Europe, before you return to Canada. Safe Journey
