Charming Villa and Apartment near Puntalón village, Motril (Costa Tropical) - South from Granada - Tranquil country location, just 2kms from the beach & 3kms busy Motril, tapas bars,shops & boutiques

A hidden or secret location, situated just outside the small village of Puntalón, 3km east from Motril on the Costa Tropical de Granada. This area around Motril has probably the best climate in mainland Europe, protected from the harsh Northern Winters by the mighty Sierra Nevadas behind. Close to the Mediterranean coast and many traditional seaside resorts down at sea level. The surrounding agricultural land is filled with 'Invernaderos' containing; cherry tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers. Hillsides and valleys covered with fruit trees, many sub-tropical.

Cortijo Nuevo this traditional country house set in lush sub-tropical gardens; was lovingly converted into three private homes many years ago and has been successfully rented for short-term holiday lets since 1990.

The original Cortijo used by the resident British owner (Patrick), CASA PEQUEÑA, a charming, traditional 1 bedroom cottage and EL APARTAMENTO, the more modern, light and airy home. The latter two are both available for short term self-catering holidays, (3-99 days). Many guests return time and again from all over the World, finding the accommodation different from many soul-less holiday apartments: The small botanical gardens make it stand apart from nearby holiday homes, being wonderfully relaxing and private. Just half an acre, but with interesting design and lush planting, it appears larger with many different themes, areas and patios - easy to find a private corner to read and relax in sun or shade. Lovely Mediterranean, garden and mountain views.

An ideal holiday touring base. Country location, yet not isolated. Many travellers have stayed here on bargain property searches - good access for Southern Andalucia and Las Alpujarras, Lecrin Valley and Granada City. My name is Patrick, a British passport holder now full-time resident on the Costa Tropical (Spain) since 2001.

UK past, lawyer & businessman, now semi-retired and days spent relaxing in the sun exploring this wonderful area, pottering in the lush gardens and maintaining the rental homes for guests.

Live alone quietly, my three rescue dogs (Hector, Boris & Dino) are great companions, you can spend as much or as little time with them as you like. We all respect guests privacy, the gardens are well designed with space and privacy for all.

A hidden paradise

My wife and myself along with our eight month old Shih Tzu spent very enjoyable and tranquil long weekend at the property. The apartment was very well equipped and exactly as described it was typically Spanish, for us it felt like home from home.

The gardens are absolutely wonderful far better than we imagined with plants from various parts of the world also three very friendly dogs can sometimes be found, the spaniel "Hugo" quite often can be seen cooling off in one of the many water features or fountains.

There is a reasonable size pool at the far end of the gardens (we tried it once but too cold for us, living in Spain for the past seven years we are acclimatised and do not swim this early in the year, Brrr!). the pool terrace has a nice shaded area to chill out, Also in this area is a summer kitchen with barbacoa y gas ring, paella pan if you are feeling really adventurous.

Patrick the owner of the property besides being a very passionate gardener is a very approachable and friendly person without encroaching on your privacy.

Although the property is situated amongst the "plastic greenhouses" do not let this deter you from visiting this tranquil casa. The costas Salobreña, Almúneca are only a short drive away, or Granada and Alhambra no more than forty minute drive.

I would recommend this property whether you want to use it as a base for sight seeing or visiting the many beaches along the Costa Tropical (which hasn't been ruined by mass tourism) or just chill on your roof or garden terrace within the wonderful gardens that Patrick has created surrounding the Casa Nuevo.

Highly recommendable and we will definately be returning to this hidden paradise.

Return visit

We last visited Patrick 10 years ago to stay for a month. Then we popped in about 4 years ago for a coffee when we were in the area..On our return stay this month we found Patrick (the owner) his usual welcoming self ,helpful and interesting and great fun to talk to or just there if needed for anything.The gardens are superb so relaxing lots of places to sit in tranquility or just catch some sun. We travelled with our dog who like us had an amazing time. He loved playing with Patrick's lovely three dogs and eating their food !!

During this visit we stayed local enjoying time ,food and drink in Motril, Alumencar and Nerja .All within a short drive away.

Would highly recommend to anyone seeking a holiday where you can immerse yourself in Spanish culture .

A quirky place with interesting gardens

The listing description regarding location, layout, facilities were accurate.

The property needed a bit of a clean when we arrived; however, Patrick had to go for a hospital appointment at short notice on the day of arrival.

Patrick was fun and very hospitable.

I would recommend the place to a friend if they wanted a quiet relaxing time at 'The Oasis'. A car is needed though, to travel around the area.

Restaurants were in Motril which is a short drive away.

We enjoyed walking in the Alpujarras Mountains which were 35-60 minutes away from the apartment.

However, as mentioned I was unexpectedly detained in hospital that morning for a minor eye operation at very short notice! Fabulous gardens and apartment with plenty of private outdoor patio areas. There are many good beaches within 20 minutes drive. Also spectacular mountain scenery within 30 minutes drive. Motril is essentially Spanish and shopping and eating out is very cheap. Patrick the owner has some very good recommendations. On the negative side you need to drive to eat out. We also found that in common with many places in Spain there is a slight problem with guard dogs howling.

Owner's Response: So pleased that you enjoyed your 3 week stay in El Apartamento. Yes, the sub-tropical gardens are wonderfully private and relaxing, some travellers rarely leave. Motril is a good base from which to explore the nearby resort towns, but yes indeed is very Spanish and English rarely heard. Actually there are a couple of places to eat nearby in the village (Puntalón), just 10 minute stroll. The local bar, El Preciso serves free tapas and simple menu and the restaurant Meson Puntalón too - although both receive few tourists and food choice not International, resort type.

Fell in love with this area of Andalucía many years ago, it still remains Spanish and unspoilt by the mass tourism found on many of Spain's other costas. The Cortijo is hidden away in a tranquil agricultural area, set in lush green gardens and close to many quiet beaches. A very tranquil oasis, yet just a 5 minute drive from the bustling market town of Motril with all it's tapas bars, restuarants, supermarkets and boutiques. Just a few kms inland, discover the white villages of Las Alpujarras /ideal walking territory) and the mighty Sierra Nevadas, excellent skiing from December to April. The area has it all and the best Winter climate in mainland Europe - snow and frosts never experienced down on the coast - possible to lunch in the gardens on Christmas Day!

Mediterranean coast just 1km as the crow flies, 35 minute walk along dirt track Rambla Puntalón. Motril's 2 huge beaches; Poniente & Granada (excellent seafood)are 2-3kms 10 minutes by car. Resort type beaches at Salobreña with facilities/International restaurants - 5kms. Many other beaches nearby; water sports, coves, diving, nude - the choice is endless on this Tropical coast and often deserted out of peak Summer months of July/August!


Malaga airport is 70 minutes west and Almeria airport is 80 minutes east. Granada Airport - just 50 minutes to the properties.

On touring holiday could use Murcia / Jerez / Gibraltar or even Madrid & Alicante!

Car hire is essential to appreciate the many attractions of the area.


Shops 3km. Motril 5 minutes. Salobreña 15 minutes. Almuñecar 25 minutes. Nerja 40 minutes. Orgiva 30 minutes. Granada 50 minutes. Sierra Nevada skiing 75 minutes. Sevilla 3 & half hours.

Both homes are furnished for full-time living, equipped with all kitchen essentials, quality furnishings, original pictures, books/DVDS, lamps etc. Electric/gas heaters for winter use and cooling fans for summer. Cleaning is done for your arrival, beds made, simple complementary food/wine pack in the fridge. Linen and towels are provided, duvets in low season. Bring your own beach/pool towels.
