Great family vacation location!
Our family enjoyed the amenities at the Upper Hay Getaway. The paddle boarding and kayaks were awesome. Big kitchen table for puzzle building and games. Fabulous view and great fishing! Can’t wait to stay again.

Awesome Cottage on a Peaceful Lake
We enjoyed our stay at the Upper Hay Getaway. The lake is just the right size for kayaking or sitting on the dock enjoying the loons. The cottage has a spacious main living area/kitchen and a nice spacious bathroom. We enjoyed the fire pit and there was even a little doggie bed for our dog. We enjoyed the neighboring towns of Pequot Lakes, Nisswa and Cross Lakes. Communication with Doreen and Jon, our hosts, was exceptional. We really enjoyed our stay!

Easy, relaxing stay
The Upper Hay Getaway was great for the relaxation and fun that was so needed. It is located on a private lot with enough trees between the neighbors. The cabin was very clean and nicely decorated. There was everything for us to use: towels, fully stocked kitchen, grill, and even bug spray (which was needed). We noticed someone else wrote a review that they ran out of toilet paper and wood for the fire wasn’t supplied. We bought our own toilet paper (no big deal) and found a few places just a mile away that sold firewood for pretty cheap. The nature was great with loons, osprey, and woodpeckers. The only thing we would have changed was the lake area. We love fishing and swimming and the area in front of the cabin was too shallow and weedy for us to really do either. If you have a boat that would be your best bet. Overall it was a great week and a comfortable stay!

Why they chose this property

We chose this property because we absolutely love the Brainerd/Baxter/Nisswa area but don't need to be in the heart of the hustle and bustle of these very active areas, including the Whitefish Chain of Lakes - we are close enough to visit but have the quaint coziness of our cabin on beautiful Upper Hay Lake. We also see lots of potential to get creative with our cabin through the years by renovating piece by piece to achieve a combination of rustic and modern while keeping it cozy. Since purchasing the property in 2015, we've refaced the kitchen cabinets, put in new flooring and redesigned the bathroom. In 2018, we completed exterior renovations and redesigned our porch. Fall of 2022 will include fresh coats of paint, updated furniture and more. We hope to create an atmosphere where our renters want to return year after year and make it a tradition for their family to visit

What makes this property unique

Our front lawn has lots of room for kids to run and explore. The property is very quiet and serene with loon sounds and great fishing. The lake shore is shallow for about 30 feet out which makes it comforting for little ones, easy for a game of beach volleyball or just easy in and out.
