A beautiful large 19th C mansion/chateau with pool near to Cognac

Updated: 28-Sep-2016
7 Bedrooms sleeping 14, 2 bathrooms, shower room 2 kitchens,Free WiFi

Set in a small tranquil village in the midst of vineyards, sunflower fields and woodland this ex residence of a french ambassador is only 5 minutes from supermarkets, cafes and boulangeries. The village lies between Cognac the home of the famous brandy and Angouleme the regions capital. It is also only 5 minutes from Jarnac with its' bars restaurants and kayaking on the river Charente as well as being near to the wonderful west coast with it's stunning beaches and famous seafood restaurants.

The main house covers three floors and has 7 double bedrooms four of which have twin beds and all of which are decorated in individual styles.

On the ground floor is a fully fitted kitchen, a breakfast room with antique tiled floor and a study and lavatory on one side of the hallway, whilst on the other side is a double sitting room with an original fireplace and TV and DVD.

Above the kitchen is a fully equipped utility room with washing machine, sink and drying facilities.

One wing of the house is a large dining area containing the original alambic used to distill cognac until recently. This also has its’ own kitchen with up to date fixtures and appliances including American fridge with ice maker dishwasher and two ovens and hobs.

The grounds are totally walled and comprise a large cobbled courtyard entered by electronic gates, with a centre piece fountain and covered parking. 2 hectares of parkland and a pool which is 12 metres x 6 metres with an electronic cover.

Additional activities: Activities abound in the area. From golf and kayaking to walks on the numerous paths through the vines and the towpaths along the Charente river. Why not visit the Museum of the Gabarriers to see the life of a Charente bargee.

Close by is the market town of Rouillac which has a monthly market with reputedly the biggest livestock market in France. Outside Rouillac is a museum of the Roman occupation and the remains of a 5,000 seater roman theatre.

For the more adventurous a visit to the Gironde peninisula is well worth while. Here you can visit the great wine making Chateaus like Margaux and St Emilion or go sand yachting on the miles of beaches. Here among the dunes and pine forests you can also see the old second World War German fortifications or if you prefer watching the world go by there are plenty of small towns with cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood.

The Surrounding Area: The pretty town of Jarnac, birthplace of Francois Mitterand 10 minutes away, sits on the banks of the River Charente where kayaks can be hired to explore the river and also enjoy the fishing. Jarnac is also home of the famous brandy house ‘Courvoisier’. The ancient town of Cognac, home of ‘Hennessy’, ‘Martell’,and ‘Remy Martin’, is a 15 minute drive away. Most of the distilleries offer free tastings and tours. . The beginning of March sees the 'Coup de Chauffe' festival, where street entertainers fill the streets with fun and the beginning of July sees the streets taken over with Blues, Soul Music and Jazz bands with jam sessions between amateur and professional musicians. If you are here in September there is the Rallye des Remparts in Angouleme where vintage cars race around the town.

Additional services: While you are staying at Bois de Vaux we offer a number of add ons that may make your stay more interesting and enjoyable. Prices are available on application

If you are tired of doing your own cooking we can arrange meals in the house cooked for your group with of course accompanying wine.

"Wonderful relaxing stay enjoyed by the whole family in a secluded corner of the French countryside, just as the advertisement said it would be.

The house was beautiful. The walled garden meant that the dog had probably the best holiday! The fact that the swimming pool had a cover on it meant that we didn't have to worry about the toddler running around.

The owner was very helpful but also unobtrusive.

I would strongly recommended it as a holiday destination.

Marvellous house and garden for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Three generations - 13 of us, aged 11 to 77 - spent two weeks in this lovely property. We had every meal in the garden, taking full advantage of the extensive garden (with red squirrels), the BBQ and the sunshine. The large pool was a great plus. Fast Wi-fi to keep us happy when we weren't exploring or swimming. Fresh croissants and chocalatines from the boulangeries in nearby Rouillac started each day.

We hardly needed to eat away from the house, but the nearby restaurants in Rouillac and Aigre were excellent value for money and catered for us all very well. Angoulême, Cognac and Santes all within easy reach.

Plenty of opportunities for sampling Pineau de Charente (a real local bargain) and Cognac.

The owner, Hugh, who lives on the site, was unobtrusive but always willing to provide help and advice.

A real treat for us all. Highly recommended for an extended family.

Holiday with teenagers in the Charente

  • 4 of 5

We were a party of 14 - 3 families mostly with teenage children. We had a great time. The pool is large and secluded, but we did have to fight for loungers as there aren't enough for all of us. The house was great as all the children stayed on the top floor - plenty of room for them all- and the adults on the first floor in lovely big rooms.

The house has a calm feel to it and we barely left other than to buy a bit of food. If you want a chilled relaxed holiday in beautiful countryside with good local food, this is the place for you.

Hugh made us feel very welcome.

Perfect relaxing week

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here at the end of July and had a fabulous holiday. There were 7 adults and 6 children and we all thoroughly enjoyed the week. The house is spacious and the kitchen is massive. The beautiful garden is perfect for the children since it is self contained. We spent a lot of time at the property, playing hide and seek in the garden, table tennis, badminton, swimming, BBQs etc. The house is clean and there are 2 dishwashers which is a bonus with a big crowd. The owner is on site in a little house at the front which was handy for questions (e.g. when I needed a high chair). At the end of the week we really felt we had got away.

Lovely relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week at this house. I stayed here at the end of July with my husband, 3 small children, my sister's family, parents and in-laws. We all thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. The garden is beautiful and perfect for entertaining the little ones since it is self-contained. The owner, Hugh, was on site which was handy for questions (e.g. when I needed a high chair). Clean house and nice big kitchen. We really felt we had got away.

A lovely relaxing venue

  • 5 of 5

We have arrived back from a lovely relaxing break during the last week of August. As many have already said, the house is full of character, very spacious and well equipped. As a group of ten including teenagers and 9 month old, there was never a moment of feeling on top of each other. We quickly developed the habit of eating breakfast in the small dining room, dining outside in the evening and retiring to the lovely big lounge later on. There is an extremely large kitchen/ dining table indoors also if needed. Hugh was very welcoming and a mine of useful information like restaurant and activity recommendations. It was first visit to France for some of us and we didn't want to come home.

Fabulous venue for a relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

We spent a fabulous week relaxing in the beautiful garden and pool. The house is set in a small village surrounded by rolling vineyards and is very well located for visiting the sites of the area. The owners were on hand to help with local recommendations and we really enjoyed sampling the regional produce.
