Breathtaking Normandy Chateau and Cottage with Heated Pool near beach - West (or East) Wing, Chateau de la Vallee

Overview

Property

Updated: 18-Sep-2016
Two wings of Normandy chateau + cottage in pretty village near forest and beach

The Château de la Vallee is idyllically set on the edge of a village by beautiful rolling countryside next to the lush Forest of Eu. The two wings of the Chateau - which each have 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms - and its Cottage with 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom are fantastic self-catering summer and winter rental properties which have been lovingly renovated retaining a vast array of original features without being too formal - no priceless antiques for parents of young children to worry about! Both properties are furnished in a period style in keeping with their rustic surroundings and provide lots of little luxuries that make a holiday here something quite special. The owners particularly welcome families with children and have concentrated on making it a fantastic and safe place for everyone to have a relaxed, laid-back and wonderful holiday. Rent one or two wings or all three properties for parties of up to 26 people.

It’s the perfect destination for a family summer holiday, a weekend reunion of friends and family and is also a romantic winter retreat or as an idyllic base for an activity holiday all the year round with so much on offer in the region including golf, fishing, cycling, hiking, walking, motocross, quadbiking, horse riding and green-laning as well as historical sites such as the landing beaches and numerous chateaux to visit.

There are numerous theme parks within reach to delight the children as well as plenty of other child-friendly activities. Many of our summer guests come back in the winter months to make the most of the beautiful countryside and to enjoy the natural beauty of the region which has so much to offer all the year round. There are several riding schools in the area, catering for everyone from age three upwards. There is lots of fishing in the region. There are two quad biking tracks within 10 minutes drive. The area is very popular for green-laning.

There are many fantastic brocantes every Sunday during the summer – highly recommended and a great and very French day out for all the family. There is golf at Le Touquet. There are wonderful cycle paths, walks and picnicking areas in the forest of Eu, two minutes away. There is amazing wildlife to watch. There are plenty of wonderful restaurants in the area. There are expansive pebble beaches at Criel-sur-Mer and Mers-les-Bain and sandy beaches at Le Crotoy. There’s the bird sanctuary to visit at Marquenterre. There’s a great fish market and a casino at Le Treport. There’s a water park, Bagatelle, near le Touquet. Paris can easily be done in a day trip. Disneyland and Parc Asterix can be done each in a day. There’s Monet’s garden to visit at Giverny. So much to do for everyone.

Breathtaking May Be An Overstatement

  • 4 of 5

We spent six nights in the East Wing of the Chateau. The photos were accurate, but the house feels a bit worn. The town of Grandcourt has only a bar - no bakery or restaurant, and the closest grocery is about 5 KM away, so we had to drive for everything. I had hoped it would be a good base for WWI touring (and had even specifically inquired about that) but all the real WWI sites were at least a 1-2 hour drive away. For a relaxing vacation without any sightseeing or touring, this would be a good place. The grounds are pretty and the pool was nice. However, as a base for touring the sites in the area, it was not terribly convenient. Still, Angela was quite responsive to the concerns we raised, and did her best to have the local contacts address issues we had.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for posting a candid review! We do try to stress that the property is not a palace filled with antiques and fine art, but instead is filled with rustic furniture in keeping with a rustic country mansion, so that families with young children don't need to worry about minor breakages. We like to think of the place as "shabby chic" with a rustic country and comfortable feel to it. Obviously we don't miss out on the home comforts of dishwashers, washing machines and microwaves either! The local bar will do lunches if you order them the day before, and they are really delicious so are worth the anticipation, and the village does indeed have a grocers shop (within 2 minutes walk of the property) which also doubles up as the bread depository where fresh bread and baked goods are dropped off each morning until a buyer for the village bakery is found. No French village worth its salt could survive without it's daily fresh bread and Grandcourt is no exception! I'm so sorry you didn't find the local shop. It's right next to the bar on the same street. Many of our guests like to tour the WW1 and WW2 sites and they find it useful to be based in Grandcourt as not only is there a very interesting war grave on the edge of the village but it is also handy for the Somme area, being on the border of Picardie, so you can visit the sights of the Somme battles within a hour or so as well as the Normandy landing beaches in the other direction within an hour or so. I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome your group to the property again - and this time we won't let you miss the local shop!

A beautiful, family friendly chateau.

  • 5 of 5

The chateau is a lovely place to stay. It has loads of character and was enjoyed by the whole family. There was plenty of space and the property was fully equipped with everything we needed. The arrival package of champagne and local goodies was a really nice touch. We were particularly pleased with the attention to safety in the grounds. We had a two year old with us and it was very reassuring that all the streams and swimming pool were properly fenced off. She loved feeding the donkey and the horses in the evening as well. The pool area is lovely-very clean! It was good to have nice clean bathrobes and o many towels provided. The BBQ area was fantastic. We found the owners to be very helpful and all communication between us was very swift and helpful. Whilst at the chateau we found it easy to contact staff to help us. They really went the extra mile to make our stay as good as possible.

The surrounding countryside is stunning. (Great for walking). The chateau is ideally situated to do day trips to Versailles, Paris and Disneyland. We all really enjoyed visiting Le Tréport, Dieppe and Berke ( which had a lovely sandy beach.) The local shop is really good and the fresh bread is amazing!

All in all we had a fantastic stay at the chateau. It was a really family friendly place. We would defiantly visit again. Thank you

Fabulous chateau in idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful relaxing weekend in this fabulous chateau which is just as splendid as it looks in the photos. The tranquil village setting provides a lovely backdrop for this magnificent country house.

Dieppe harbour and Mer- le-Bains are only 25 mins away and you are only 1.5 hours from the Eurotunnel, making it easy for a quick weekend getaway. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Owner's Response: Thank you Sheridan for your kind review. We're so glad you enjoyed the chateau and surrounding area and you're right - lots of people take advantage of the property's proximity to Calais to nip over for easy weekends and big family get-togethers. You can get to central London easily within 4 hours or less. We look forward to welcoming you and your family again very soon - and next time, please stay longer!

Fantastic place and great hospitality

  • 5 of 5

I would just like to say what a lovely stay we had in your chateau. It really is a beautiful place and we have had a fabulous short break there, not long enough and we have all said we would love to go back at some time!

Alison and Yuri were wonderfully welcoming and so very helpful. It was a pleasure to meet them, please pass our thanks onto them (We arrived late on Wednesday after motorcycling the coast road, and all the shops were closed for supplies so Yuri took the guys out to collect pizza!).

We will definitely reccommend the chateau to others - Its a gem in a lovely part of France and one of the most delightful places we have stayed.

Prachtig huis!

  • 5 of 5

Aanrader is Dieppe!
