Bareges - Helios Apartment

  • 5 of 5

Bareges – our favourite village in the Pyrenees. This year we arrived by train and bus to be met by our kind hosts at one of their beautiful self catering apartments in Helios, the converted Rothschild mansion in the heart of the village. The location is perfect – the sound of a tumbling stream from the window and within 100 metres walks into the mountains and along the valleys. The bus goes down to the next village and on to Lourdes but Jude and Peter drove us to more remote spots, and with their amazing knowledge of butterflies, birds and flowers ensured that we made the most of our walks. The apartment was extremely spacious and comfortable and had all the equipment we needed for cooking up some of the local AOC lamb bought from the butcher and even had an espresso pot for those who enjoy a strong coffee. We ate some heavenly meals at mountain restaurants and delicious crisp pizza from the take-away just up the road. In previous years we have had our car. There are good parking facilities at Helios and there is an excellent lift. This year it was much easier to keep in touch with home using the Wifi facility in the apartments. We missed the Tour de France but it was great to relive memories when we got back home and saw the riders toiling their way up to the Col du Tourmalet. Thanks again Jude and Peter.

Lovely apartment in Bareges

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here every summer for the past few years. The apartment is clean and comfortable with stunning views from the balcony. There is easy walking just outside the front door as well as more challenging walks. Pete and Jude provide lots of information and will help you make the best of your holiday. If walking is what you like this is the place for you. If you are a birder; it couldn't be better especially if you like raptors. The flowers and the butterflies are stunning. Guided walks are on offer and Jude is a real expert on butterflies and flowers. If you want to walk on your own Pete will suggest places and drop off and pick up. The apartment has maps and wildlife guides as well as the standard bird, flower and butterfly books so you need to bring them with you. When you get back after a long hot day there is a good shower and a washing machine! Local bars can provide refreshment with a view of the mountains. The wonderful restaurant Chez Louisette is about an hour's walk away up through the woods. You can sit outside and eat their garbure - a speciality of the region or the world famous local Bareges lamb. It is said that the flavour comes from the high percentage of flowers and herbs that the lambs graze on. If you are a keen cyclist why not try doing the run up to Tourmalet or get a lift up there and sit in the famous cafe at the top surrounded by tour de France memorabilia. What isn't to like!

Ideal base for hiking and birding in the Pyrenees!

  • 5 of 5

This is a prefect location for a week of walking or birdwatching in the Pyrenees. The apartment is very comfortable and has beautiful views along the valley between Luz St. Sauveur and the Col de Tourmalet. From the terrace you can enjoy Crag Martins flying (and nesting) overhead, Black Woodpeckers occasionally crossing the valley, while Dippers nest on the river below. Bareges is very small with lots of charm, and yet has everything that you need for a week's holiday, without needing any other transport. There are lots of lovely walks up either side of the valley, with plenty of chances to see local specialities such as Lammergeier. Peter (the owner) met us at Lourdes airport and is happy to give a lift to other sites of interest in the area, such as the top of the Col de Tourmalet (great walk back into Bareges, with Snow Finch, Marmots, Alpine Chough and Red Backed Shrikes), or the magnificent Cirque de Gavarnie (more Lammergeiers, Golden Eagle, etc.). We've enjoyed visits in late spring and early autumn, and look forward to our next trip!

Helios Appartments

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in the Helios Appartments at Bareges was delightful. The acdcommodation was clean and just as described with two adequate sized bedrooms, and bathroom upstairs, a lounge/diner, kitchen and toilet downstairs. The appartment was close the the centre of the small town of Bareges which has a mix of shops, Hotels, bars, and restaurants and a supermarket, cinema, swimming pool and thermal baths.

In summer there are local walks from the town cen tre, but for more adventurous walks a car is a must. There are many truly spectacular walks within 45 minutes drive and only an hour away is the famous Cirque de Gavarnie, a spectacular semi-circle of towering snow capped mountain peaks.

In summer the weather is around a warm 25oC for most of the time, occassionally the mist descends for the day as the resort is at 1000m.

Cyclists pass through the towm all day every day to attempt to reach the top of the Col de Tourmalet, one of the most grueling climbs in the Tour de France.

Bareges is a delightful Napoleonic village situated at the heart of the central Pyrenees in an area of great natural beauty unspoiled by the passage of time, and offers the perfect base for exploring. Bareges and the Grand Tourmalet is also the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. The valley is the entry point into the Pyrenees National Park and the Neouvielle Nature Reserve and contains many exceptional sites including the magnificent Cirque de Gavarnie (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The village is situated on the mythical Col du Tourmalet with the Tour de France passing most years. Over the centuries the the local countryside inspired many famous writers including Victor Hugo and George Sand. It is also here that the golden age of Pyrenean exploration started. The seventeen picturesque villages of the Pays Toy (the local area) cling resolutely to the mountainsides, each with their own particular character and local heritage of 12th century churches, ancient streets and monuments.

Other Activities: white-water rafting, birdwatching, trout fishing,

Ski: Bareges (La Station du Tourmalet) has the largest ski area in the Pyrenees with 125kms of pistes served by an ultra modern lift network. The interlinked ski areas have wonderful skiing for all abilities, wide sunny cruising pistes in La Mongie, challenging forest runs above Bareges, a huge snowpark, a pretty beginners area with user friendly 'moving carpet' lifts. The adventurous will love the brilliant off-piste descent from 2900m (9500ft) from the Pic du Midi. The whole ski area has snow cannon coverage to guarantee snow cover. You can ski back to the village on a variety of runs. There are excellent ski schools who offer lessons and guiding for all levels, including children from the age of 4 and a number of hire shops. After a day on the slopes what better way to relax than in the Napoleonic spa baths which offer pools, Jacuzzis, massages, steam rooms, beauty treatments.
