Updated: 19-Nov-2016
Sleeps 8 / 10 Set in 1/4 acre, ensuite annex, children's room, log stove, SKYHD

Summer holiday let for self-catering family requiring access to areas of outstanding natural beauty in Somerset, Devon and Dorset. The Old Smithy really is in a central west country location. Set over three floors The Old Smithy provides a diverse range of flexible accommodation to suite virtually any family unit. It has large open plan family kitchen with pine table providing seating for 10. Sunroom. Beamed sitting room with hamstone fire place. Cloakroom with shower. Three bedrooms, (plus separate double en-suite annex). Family bathroom and children's tv, playroom and bedroom on the second floor.

The Children's room provides further space for children to play or chill!

The Old Smithy: The Old Smithy is an individual and interesting 18th Century Hamstone Cottage. Formerly part of a farm, the dairy buildings now form the main house the original black smiths has been retained as a workshop. Needless to say it has enjoyed considerable extension and upgrading! Set in a quarter of an acre of fully enclosed, well stocked and private gardens, this family cottage has a host of character features and lies in a quiet residential area on the southern outskirts of the Market Town of Crewkerne.

The local Hamstone used in the area is a beautiful, rich gold colour and incredibly thickly laid in construction making it cool in summer and snug in winter. The cottage is mainly laid to carpet and enjoys double glazing and gas fired central heating throughout.

The Old Smithy is a family home, providing very spacious, comfortable, family accommodation.

The Garden: The Garden is very private and mainly laid to lawn covering about 1 quarter of an acre to include main garden (ideal for football and cricket!) a children’s garden and a BBQ area (adult dining & sunbathing!). A combination of ground based electric and solar shrub and boarder lighting creates a Mediterranean feel on summer evenings – combined with a gas BBQ, chimera fire and a bit of background heat from the patio heater makes al fresco dining an option for even the freshest of summer evenings.

The BBQ area is a fantastic sun trap, together with the comfortable garden furniture and peaceful surroundings, ensures relaxation for all!

The garden has two small Ponds, mature boarders, apple trees and a variety of evergreen and perennial shrubs which makes this a wonderfully private and spacious area to enjoy outdoor living.

Additional Accommodation: The Folly was originally a garage (situated at the bottom of the drive on the edge of the garden) now converted into a self contained double room with en-suite facilities, double bed, large dressing table, two comfortable chairs, cupboard and drawers. Also with the added luxury of a wall mounted TV with SKY feed from main House. There is a concertinaed door to walk-in wardrobe with hanging space and drawers. The Folly also has a fully fitted kitchenette area with fridge / freezer, sink, microwave and two oven hobs.

About the Owner

We have been letting out The Old Smithy since 2007. As a family we spend the summer holidays away we decided that we would love to let other families enjoy our beautiful home and garden while we are away.

We have enjoyed our stay in The Old Smithy very much. This is indeed a lovely place. We had our dinner in the garden every evening - the weather has been so nice!

We have been to Stonehenge and Bath and went swimming in the sea a few times.

This is a lovely home to stay and relax in the sun in your large garden, while the children played - there is so much space and sunshine.

We found that Crewkerne is a nice town, quiet but still had all that we needed.

We used your Cluedo - both kids and adults had great fun playing.

Thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful holiday home. The home, garden and weather have been wonderful.

Our holiday heaven

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, 3 children(6,10 and 12 yrs old) and our 2 mothers stayed at this lovely property for a week. It wasn't quite the rural setting that we were expecting but in no way were we dissappointed. On the Sunday afternoon I cooked on the bbq, the girls relaxed with their wine and the children played cricket in the large rear garden. It felt like you were miles from anywhere, very private rear garden and the children loved the shed full of toys. We spent many an afternoon just relaxing in the back yard.

My mother in law stayed in the folly (granny flat) which gave her some privacy. Upstairs in the attic the children had their own special place with a wide variety of games, television and dvd player. Great for the parents as we could relax and the children could do their own thing if we weren't out doing things.

All the rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. We found it to be ideal when there was 3 generations staying under the same roof. Cooking facilities were excellent and met all our needs. Very handy having an upstairs and downstairs bathroom. The owners were only a phone call away for any questions that we had, which was reassuring.

Crewcerne was a lovely rural village with a great little museum, adequate shopping facilities for all we needed and some fabulous little pubs. Quiz night at the Royal Oak and great value meals at Oscars wine bar.

We found it to be very central comfortabley doing Weymouth, Lyme Regis, Cheddar gorge and CDreely Adventure Park at Exeter on seperate days out. Coming from Northampton it was also very easy to incorporate a visit to Stonehenge on the way through.

All in all great place for families for a holiday.

Fantastic Family Fun

  • 5 of 5

What a week! We all so enjoyed our stay at The Old Smithy celebrating family landmarks. The house was very comfortable and so well equipped for all our various needs, the garden was a superb sun trap and ideal for the younger generation to charge around!

Days on the beach, walks from breath taking Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door, nights watching the shooting stars - we were very lucky with our weather!

All generations (3) had a very memorable week together - we will definitely be back - hopefully next summer!!!

Many thanks for a fab holiday

Wonderfully relaxing family fortnight

  • 5 of 5

What a truly wonderful holiday we all had in The Old Smithy. A large family group was accommodated with lots of space for us to enjoy!! The children loved the top attic room and the snug room - with many competitions on the Wii - in fact Grandpa joined in a few!!!

The kitchen and BBQ had all we needed to provide lovely suppers to feed the family! There was nothing we missed.

The garden was perfect for many hours of sun bathing, children playing endless games - Hockey and croquet were new to my 3 children!

My parents loved staying the the annexe where they could have their own space and head off to bed when they wanted to escape!!

Thank you for such a lovely holiday. We will definitely be back next year. We would love to come for Christmas and New Year and enjoy the snuggy sitting room with gorgeous fire - not needed in July!!

We really enjoyed exploring the area - a super walk up on Ham Hill and a visiti to the pub, exploring the beautiful Jurassic coast from Durdle Door to Branscombe. We also loved Beer and found another lovely pub there!!!

Once again - many thanks and we'll be back!!

A fun filled and relaxing Easter Somerset holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a superb family holiday where we stayed in The Old Smithy!

We were a party made up of three generations, myself and my husband, our son and daughter, their wife and husband and our 4 grand children. We were so pleased to find that The Old Smithy was just as we had hoped.

Plenty of room for all the children to have fun in the spacious garden, endless games of hide and seek, plenty of things to entertain them in the garden - including hockey sticks and balls - their new found sport! We had to buy extra Easter eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt to spread around the garden.

When the weather was blustery and wet at the start of the week we wrapped up and went for a wild walk on the beach down in West Bay - being Broadchurch viewers we had much fun spotting land marks!

The Old Smithy had plenty of space for the children to take themselves off and play on the Wii, Play Station, watch some of the many DVD's supplied - or even play on some games left - which they loved. Othello was a particular favorite.

The days the sun shone we escaped the wind on the sheltered BBQ area and started our 2015 sun tans - while the children played in the garden.

We all found The Old Smithy very comfortable. There was plenty of space for us all to have our privacy and some quiet time. My husband and I stayed in the gorgeous Folly, which is a self contained double annex. Some evenings we left the youngsters to carry on into the early hours and retreated to our own holiday home! Both The Old Smithy and The Folly were fully equipped for all our needs. The kitchen had everything we needed.

We would love to come again one summer to make the most of the BBQ and Chiminea in the summer evenings.

We would all highly recommend The Old Smithy for a family holiday, or a group of friends wishing to holiday together while having the space to escape from each other when needed!

It was a real treat to be able to do all our shopping by just popping into Crewkerne where the Waitrose and Lidal had all that we needed - and more!

Thank you very much to Hilary and David for making us feel so welcome. We have had such a wonderful long week - we really appreciate extending our week to include the Easter weekend.

We look forward to getting in touch about our next visit.
