About this property

La Casa Vieja - Adorable Hideaway In Marathon, Texas

Take a step back in time to the Old West. It doesn't get much more atmospheric than this, folks. A real piece of West Texas history, La Casa Vieja is a gorgeously restored home in Marathon, Texas that was originally an old farmhouse built in 1917. Now, more than 100 years later, it is a beautiful little hacienda, complete with a casita at the rear of the property that can accommodate additional guests. Located at the foot of Big Bend National Park and just a few blocks from the world-famous Gage Hotel, this property is a stunner. With custom woodwork throughout, this delicately-appointed 950-square-foot home sits on a corner lot and offers a beautiful enclosed private patio/courtyard for privacy. Surrounded by pretty, native desert vegetation, the custom features of this home are far too numerous to mention. Here are a list of just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings
~ Open floor plan
~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels
~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen
~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring
~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top
~ Kraftmaid hickory cabinets in kitchen
~ Pendant lighting
~ Tiled backsplash
~ Textured walls
~ Kiva fireplace in living room
~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom
~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry
~ Spacious closet
~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace
~ Shaded front porch
~ Flat-screen satellite TV
~ Wifi enabled

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.

Whether you're here for a wedding or event, are on an artist's retreat, are off to explore the surrounding area, or are simply here to enjoy the peaceful, gorgeous surroundings, La Casa Vieja is your home away from home in Marathon.

Unique Home in West Texas
Our family enjoyed the historic adobe home, courtyard, and casita. Marathon is a quaint town just north of Big Bend NP. We enjoyed using La Casa Vieja as a home base for day trips into the national park, state park, and surrounding towns. Stock up on the essentials in Fort Stockton, but make sure to try the offerings at the local restaurants and the French Grocer.

Perfect for small dogs
Cute, clean, excellent response from management, everything works. The courtyard is perfect for dogs! One of our 3 dogs is an escape artist. The courtyard was so secure even he could not escape! Unfortunately we had overcast skies for 2 of our 3 nights. But a fire in the courtyard fireplace without having to keep a constant eye (or leash) on our little bum made for some perfect evenings after visiting Big Bend N.P. Some decent bfast tacos at the French Grocer and dinner at the 12 gauge restaurant. A nice birthday getaway! I'd recommend staying for longer than 3 nights as there is so much to do.

Great stay at the La Casa Viejo
My wife and I really enjoyed your home. It was very comfortable and near all the restaurants in Marathon which is mainly the Gage Hotel. Easy access to Big Bend National Park which was about an hour away. In Marathon, we witnessed Javelinas and an Ostrich.

Second stay
This was our group's second stay at Casa Viejo and it was excellent again. Very comfortable and well-stocked with kitchenware and all the necessities; nicely located at the edge of downtown Marathon and a beautiful straight-shot drive down to Big Bend National Park. Marathon is a great dark skies location and the stars were blazing overhead for the entire stay.

About the host

I'm a long-time resident of Southern California who travels often to this part of Texas for leisure purposes myself. In my own travels over the years, I have been the beneficiary of incredible hospitality in the many unique properties where I've had the good fortune of resting my head, so I'm only too happy to return the favor and provide people with their own memorable vacation experiences.

Why they chose this property

After taking a road trip through the Big Bend area several years ago on my way to Memphis, I was hooked on this area. Something about this particular part of the country really resonated with me. I'm not sure if it is the peace and quiet, the wide open spaces, the romance of a lost time, or, perhaps most likely, all of the above. I've been making routine trips to the region since then and finally took the plunge and bought this property. I have a major soft spot for carefully-restored historical properties, and this one definitely fit the bill. A lot of care went into this renovation. I fell in love with it the moment it popped up on a real estate website I refer to. When I made a trip out there and saw it in person, I loved it even more. I have no doubt you'll feel the same.

What makes this property unique

This is a serious step back in time to the Pancho Villa era. But with all the modern amenities and luxuries one has come to expect in these unique properties. Here are just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings
~ Open floor plan
~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels
~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen
~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring
~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top
~ Kraftmaid hickory cabinets in kitchen
~ Pendant lighting
~ Tiled backsplash
~ Textured walls
~ Kiva fireplace in living room
~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom
~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry
~ Spacious closet
~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace
~ Shaded front porch

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.
