About the property

Le Pietraie is a stone-walled farmhouse first built in 1600's, surrounded by a wonderful garden full of many typical and rare plants and shrubs, lovely at all times of year. The house nestles in the beautiful Peacock Valley (Val di Pavone), encircled by fine woodlands, hills and meadows, and is like a terrace on the valley. The valley is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, butterflies and rare wild plants: snowdrops, hellebore, anemone, narcissus, cyclamen, wild orchids, primrose, brooms, wild cherry trees and arbutus unedo to name just a few. The Pietraia lies 300 m from the Peacock River (Pavone) where it is possible to bath, to swim, to make long walks in a wonderful canyon until you reach the confluence with the Cecina River. On our website you can see more photos of the garden, the Valley, the hills around Le Pietraie. The owners live on the first floor. They speak English,German, French and Italian. In case of health problems an English speaking family doctor is nearby.

Guest book: 2004: We had wonderful days cycling the many hills. active on the slow ascents. This is a very special place. B. Beerle , Anchorage, Alaska *** July 2006: We had an absolute great time staying at your place. You achieved a perfect combination of comfort and fine style, a superb mix of old and new at your property. We certainly like to return to Pietraia one day again. N. Bendin, Ottawa, Canada. *** August 2006 We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your wonderful place. Set in a beautiful area, within driving distance of some fabulous sites; we could not have asked more. At times, it felt as though we were a million miles from anything/everything; and that is the way we we wanted it! It was totally relaxing! The Smith family, Louisiana, USA

Cities of art – thermal baths: According to the UNESCO, 60% of World's Heritage is concentrated in Italy, half of which is to be found in Florence alone! Florence is one hour from Montecastelli, Pisa 80 minutes, Volterra 40 minutes, Siena 40 minutes, San Gimignano 40 minutes, Colle Val d'Elsa 25 minutes, Lucca 1 hour 45 minutes, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina 15 minutes, Montecastelli 5 minutes, not forgetting the little discovered gem of Massa Marittima,45 minutes. But remember: the lesser known Medieval and Etruscan towns of Tuscany hold its real charm and beauty. Hundreds of churches, museums, art galleries, buildings, as well as street markets, shops and restaurants, hidden in narrow streets of little villages, are waiting for you to discover and explore them. Very old and beautiful thermal baths were you can relax yourself are 20 to 90 minutes far: Sasso Pisano, Bagno Vignoni, Petriolo, Casciana Terme, Venturina.

Tuscan wines, Tuscan olive oil, chestnuts: Around Montecastelli it is possible to find high quality wines at really reasonable prices, in Castelnuovo VC (15 minutes) there is a good Enoteca. Montalcino with its Brunello and Rosso is not far. It is possible to buy good olive oil in many villages. In Castelnuovo Val di Cecina there is in October a chestnut fair. In San Gimignano there is in November a Festival for finest olive oils (olio extra vergine). In Volterra you can find the local white truffles. During the early spring you can find wild asparagus along the paths. Three good local restaurants at very reasonable prices are 5 minutes from Le Pietraie, many others are in the nearby villages.

Peace and quiet in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for nightlife, action and adventure this property is probably not for you, If, however, you are seeking tranquility, stunning views and a great base for sightseeing Le Pietraie is nothing short of ideal. It is remote enough to provide the most relaxing of holidays, while less than an hour's drive from Siena, Volterra, Monteriggioni and the beach.

The owners Nedda and Gionata are a lovely couple who kept us supplied with fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as plentiful tips on where to go and what to see. This was our first visit to Tuscany and we would love to return. Whether walking, relaxing or sightseeing is your thing I would recommend Le Pietraie most highly.

Off the beaten path - exactly what I hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

It was a pleasure to stay as guests of Nedda and Gionata. It was easy to find with the directions provided by Nedda prior to arrival and truly an escape from the hustle and noise of the more touristy areas. In the mornings we were gently awakened by the sounds of birds and lovely the sunrise. The evenings were made extra relaxing, sitting in Nedda's beautiful garden, watching the sun set on the day. The location was perfect for day trips to surrounding villages, San Gimignano (Nedda's recommendation) was especially wonderful. The Olivo property was available when we arrived and so we stayed there, making great use of it's roominess and great kitchen for preparing food we bought from local markets. There was nothing that we needed for, it was exactly what we wanted in a Tuscany escape. If you want to unwind and enjoy the country region, it's the perfect place. If you want a quiet, beautiful home base to come back to after driving and visiting surrounding areas, it's great for that too.

We did a couple of early morning hikes and they were great. You could be as active or relaxed as you want to be staying here. Highly recommend, a total pleasure.. thank you Nedda & Gionata!

Paradise in the Hills of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a true Italian experience away from the crowds and tourists this is a wonderful spot. The setting is ideal and the hosts are wonderful. This villa was a great location for travelling to major centres like Siena or Volterra or several other smaller hill top towns, all offering a unique and rewarding experience. We loved coming back to the peaceful gardens overlooking the Tuscan country side, tons of stars in the sky at night, and oh so quiet. The kitchen was well equipped, the bathroom had ample space and hot water, the bed was very comfy and the character and charm made it perfect! We can't thank you enough, Nedda, Gion, and Matteo for making our stay in Tuscany a truly special one.

Blütenparadies in den Bergen

  • 4 of 5

An Italian Dream

  • 5 of 5

When we drove up the lane way we were amazed at how beautiful and peaceful it was. We were truly transported into a Tuscan getaway. The villa was comfortable and we felt very at home. The gardens and the panoramic view is breathtaking. We loved this place so much we are travelling back there this year. The family is so inviting and helped make our Italian experience one we will never forget. The villa is about an hour drive in any direction to see some amazing things. it was great to take small day trips but be home for a relaxing evening. This listing is very accurate and I would recommend staying here!! 5 stars!!

The house belongs to the medieval town of Montecastelli Pisano, and is situated in the Pavone valley, not more than one hour's drive from Florence, Siena, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, the Tyrrenian Sea.

Two very clean Rivers give opportunities to swim. In spring the hills are getting more and more green every day, with the white blossom of the big wild cherry trees, you can walk among wild primrose, or wild cyclamens, or anemones. There is a field full of yellow narcissus. Every part of the valley has its own flowers. In summer to walk along the River Pavone is something very very special. You can swim and stay all day there, making a barbecue near the water at night and singing around the fire, waiting for the rising moon. In June you can walk under the bright stars, surrounded by millions of fire-flies. In autumn the oak forests turn to orange brown and will keep their leaves until December. In 1-2 hours you can be in the best Golf clubs of Tuscany.

Golf: You can reach several Golf Tuscan Clubs in 1/2-2 hours. They are near the principle Art cities of Tuscany, and the time you need to reach them is among the beautiful tuscan hills.

In Tuscany, thanks to a warm climate, and surrounded by the beautiful landscapes, it's possible to play all the year long. By the way, the best period to play golf in Tuscany, is in spring and autumn when the temperature not so high as in summer, let you play during the central hours of the day.The Golf Clubs around us are near FIRENZE:Golf Club Bellosguardo Vinci (Vinci); Golf Club Centanni, Bagno a Ripoli; Circolo dell’Ugolino, Impruneta; Golf & Country Club Poggio dei Medici, Scarperia; Castelfalfi Golf & Country Club, Castelfalfi; Contry Club Le Pavoniere, Prato; near SIENA:Circolo Golf L’Abbadia, Colle Val d’Elsa. Near PISA: Country Club Cosmopolitan, Tirrenia; Montecatini Golf, Monsummano Terme; Golf Club Fontevivo, San Miniato; Golf Club Vicopelago (Lucca); near AREZZO:Golf Club Casentino, Poppi, Golf Club Cortona, Cortona; near LIVORNO:Golf Club Hermitage,Portoferraio; near GROSSETO:Golf Club Maremma, San Martino; Golf Club Argentario, Porto Ercole.
