Ideal extended stay in a charming setting.

  • 5 of 5

My family (wife and two daughters) have just returned from a visit to the Lot/Dordogne (Midi-Pyrenees) region of France. I devoted a lot of time to researching vacation houses in southern France before we chose Boussagou Gîtes for our one-month trip. Best travel decision ever.

Boussagou was an ideal base from which to tour this amazing piece of la France profound. The setting of this tiny hamlet of four cottages exceeded our vision of what a home in France should be. Picturesque, quiet and secluded (but not remote), and lovingly cared for. The horse pasture, gardens (full of rosemary, bay, and thyme) and rolling hill dotted with ancient walnut trees, is like medicine for overstressed spirits. Postcard country villages are a few minutes drive away, and within an hour are enough stunning sites to justify a year-long visit.

The Pigeonnier, where we stayed, is a classic country home, all ancient stone and beam charm, updated with all modern conveniences. Since we visited in March, the two wood-burning stoves (set in beautiful original fireplaces), contributed more than just atmosphere: they took the edge off the evening chill, as well. The kitchen is well-provisioned for preparing meals from the bounty of exceptional products offered at local markets. (Note to serious cooks: you might want to consider bringing your own sharp chef’s knife). Anything the kitchen didn’t have, the owners were delighted to supply on request.

Ah, yes, the owners. Ken and Bernadette, English ex-pats and refugees from the intense London business world, proved to be one of the best parts of our French adventure. Like ideal gîte hosts, this gracious and hardworking couple—who live on the property—were available whenever we needed anything, but were extremely discrete, too. Ken and Bernie’s love for Boussagou is infectious: they have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the property, and it shows. Moreover, they are extremely accommodating—and a lot of fun. We now consider them friends and hope it will not be long before we meet again.

If you need five-star luxury, Boussagou is not for you. But if you prefer authentic, warm, unique, personal, comfortable and independent (which is why you are considering a gîte, of course), then I cannot recommend this special place highly enough. Bon voyage!

As beautiful as the pictures

  • 5 of 5

It is hard to fault this place. Our large family rented all three gites for a week and loved every second. The area is beautiful and the gites wonderfully appointed. There was a thoughtful welcome pack, and Ken and Bernie have the knack of being available in a very unobtrusive way. They made wonderful suggestions which enhanced our holidays immeasurably, and are themselves absolutely lovely people . We are not really people who return to places as we always like to explore new areas, but there is such a lot to see and do, and this is such a lovely place run by such great people that we are already talking about it !!

Fabulous holiday in a stunning gite.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at Le Pigeonnier in July and I can't speak highly enough of the gite. The pool is stunning and even has an honesty bar with drinks etc at cost price! There is a great children's play area with swings and a trampoline and a barn with bikes toys and a fancy dress box. In the mornings you can see if the chickens have laid eggs and Ken very often lets you take some, our children loved this. The give is in a great area to use as a base to explore the Dordogne and the Lot area as it is right on the border of both. We are already planning on returning next year.

Our glorious September holiday at Boussagou.

  • 5 of 5

The directions given to Boussagou Gites were spot on. Our Gite, Le Pigeonnier, was spotlessly clean, well equipped and bathed in sunshine for the whole of September. The setting was superb, surrounded by a chestnut tree forest with miles of tracks and minor roads to explore with our two Border Terriers. We used the good size swimming pool almost everyday and took advantage of the peace and tranquillity of the location relaxing in the sunshine. Ken and Bernadette really looked after us which started with a superb meal on our arrival. I had a slight health problem whilst we were on holiday and Ken helped enormously and ensured I was seen by a very good English speaking Doctor who made life much better for me so I could enjoy the holiday. The Lot/Dordogne is a magical region to explore with many towns with fabulous views over stunning countryside and large rivers. Ken and Bernadette have a wealth of information regarding restaurants, trips and places to explore including local shops etc which proved to be very useful for us ensuring that good food and wine was always on the table.

We look upon Ken and Bernadette as friends and have no hesitation in recommending there Gite complex to anyone. They ensured that our holiday was a terrific one, they are lovely people.

We miss Bousagou and the glorious holiday we had there.

Many many thanks for the help and friendship you gave us.

Roger, Denise and two Border Terriers who also loved the place.

Excellent for both relaxation and exploring!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Boussagou in May (2014) for a one week holiday with an all-male group of friends.

Even though we were only 4 people in total, we decided to stay in ‘le Pigeonnier’, which is actually large enough for 8. The ‘gîte’ is very well renovated and has all the modern and ancient comfort you can dream of, like several new bathrooms and toilets, but cozy old style open fires – wood is provided by the hosts. Also the kitchen is completely equipped with everything you need. For people who can’t live without modern electronics, there is a wifi connection that allows decent streaming - not so obvious in a remote site like this - and there is digital satellite tv with a large choice of channels to choose from. For shopping, you only have to drive 10 minutes to the nearest small groceries or bakery, or half an hour to several large supermarkets, where you will find every local or French delicacy you can think of.

On the other hand the place is very secluded, and silent. You might hear one car pass by every two hours, when you are relaxing near the beautiful pool, or just strolling around the farmland.

The hosts Bernadette and Ken are very welcoming and accommodating. If you want you can book a three course dinner on arrival night, and I can definitely recommend it! They are always up for a chat or an aperitif and available in case you need them. You can always run into them around the vast premises. Whether they are feeding the chicken, cleaning the pool, or driving the tractor on the field, they are busy bees and continuously working to even further improve Boussagou. They also know the region very well and will happily give you suggestions for places to visit.

And there are many places to visit in the Dordogne near Boussagou. Picturesque towns like Rocamadour, Sarlat and Perigueux, to name a few, are just a short drive away. You will also find numerous impressive castles and beautiful gardens. During the week we stayed here, we went exploring every day and we still had so much left to discover.

In short, if you are in need of some fresh air and peace and quiet, I can definitely recommend staying at Boussagou, whether you are a family with children, a couple looking for a romantic remote love nest, or a group of friends. I for one am definitely looking forward to visiting Ken and Bernadette again.

A beautiful place to relax and have fun in.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week in stunning Boussagou; a tranquil hamlet full of charm. For us, as parents, we were able to relax amongst the beautiful and immaculate buildings and grounds whilst our young children could play happily and safely in the pool, on the trampoline and play area, collecting chicken eggs for breakfast, feeding the horses, or just running freely on the field and lawns.

We had a very warm welcome from Ken and Bernadette - fantastic hosts throughout our stay. Our meal on our arrival was delicious and they kept in touch daily with excellent tips on days out in the area. The goodies in the hamper were also appreciated, as was the honesty bar/fridge by the pool (ice-creams and cold drinks on hand was a definite bonus!).

We stayed in the two bedroomed 'Pichoutou' gite which provided everything we needed. Our private outlook over a row of lavender to the horses and woodland was a tranquil setting to unwind in.

There are plenty of lovely places to visit within a 30 minute drive: Gourdon, Belves, Chateauxnaud, Les Jardins de Marqueyssac, La Roque de Gageac to name a few which were all extremely picturesque with fun entertainment for the children (during the summer season).

We were reluctant to leave but look forward to returning in the future hopefully with family and friends!

Only minutes from the property are the two picturesque villages of Marminiac and Cazals where you can buy your fresh croissants and baguettes. Haggle at the Sunday market (not to be missed) offering all sorts of fresh local produce and other goodies. There are local restaurants and bars, a Casino (minimarket, not gambling establishment!) providing everything you might need, plus butchers, wine shop, hairdressers and even a museum. There is also a lake with a beach at Cazals.

The surrounding area offers a huge selection of dining experiences. Boussagou is perfectly placed for access to all of the most beautiful sites in the Dordogne and the Lot. There are numerous chateaux to visit, caves to explore and pretty market towns to meander through. There is also a wide range of outdoor activities, for all ages, close by, such as canoeing. cycling, fishing, horse-riding, golf, vineyards.
