About the property

Ultimate privacy.and security on 1 acre eagle's nest surrounded by nature..

Our home is located on a hill above a beautiful nature preserve (San Elijo Lagoon), it's very secluded and is at the end of a dirt driveway. Since the weather in San Diego is lovely year-round, we frequently take walks down into the reserve to enjoy the beautiful views.

Because the home is perched on its own hill above the reserve, it is very private and hase no direct neighbors. The home was built from solid cedar in 1980 much as a Lindal log cabin. As you can see from the photos, the focal point of the house consists of the 8 massive picture windows that allow you to enjoy views of the breaking surf. There is a telescope to study the surfers prior to heading to the beach.

Although the house is 3 levels, the most used rooms are located on a single level -- the second level above the subterranean basement and garage. Upon entering, you walk into the great room, with a full kitchen and dining area off the the left. The master suite is located on one side of the house and two additional bedrooms are located with the laundry facilities on the opposite -- as 2 wings. The third level is a loft area used as a family television room and includes a futon fold up bed.

We have plenty of beach chairs, towels, boogie boards, etc to take with you to enjoy the shore. For avid surfers we have both long boards and short boards for use as well.

Please be aware that the deck cantilevers over a canyon with railing designed to maximize the panorama. Unmatched, expansive view for adults but a possible risk for children. So we have to limit guests to adults, or those with adolescent children.

About Ian Hirschsohn

I am a retired engineer. My kids, Ava and Ryan, are grown and live far from home. I graduated in Mechanical then Aerospace. I grew up in South Africa. Where houses are built of brick and stone. Where 2x4 framing covered in drywall and stucco is unknown.

So when I built my house, in 1976, I wanted an abode that would last. I found a company in Tacoma, WA that offered solid cedar tongue-in-groove (no nails). All walls 4" thick. A house that would be around longer than me. Practical yet naturally beautiful. Timeless. One that fits its unusual natural environment. That is my house. I love it, never ceased loving it. Never tired of it. Nor has my family. Everyone who has visited or stayed in it has been awed. I believe you will love it too.

But I am an engineer. I was taught to focus on safety and practicality above aesthetics. And that is what you will find. The entire house rests on two 16" x 7" steel "I" beams 60 ft long used for bridges and skyscrapers. Unheard of in residential construction. You will feel how the house and cantilevered decks have no "give," no squeaks. As if they were built on concrete slab.

Likewise, I engineered and installed the wiring and plumbing with my family's safety in mind. Separate branch circuits for lights and outlets (most on GFCI). So when the kids tripped a breaker not only would they be safe, but the lights don't alarming go out.

There was only one house that survived the 1964 Anchorage, AK 9.0 earthquake. A Justus house like mine.

Notes:
Solana Beach is an active little town with numerous restaurants, craft brewery, Whole Foods store, farmers' market among others. It is a bit up market with no nationwide fast food downtown. It has wide sidewalks. SB has its Cedros Designer District within a couple miles pleasant walk through a quiet neighborhood. The DD has an assortment of elite boutique eclectic shops that are fun. Also the famed Belly Up tavern where many famed bands premiered. North is Encinitas, appealing to a younger crowd. South is Del Mar with its upscale shops and race-track (dormant after 4 Sept). Further afield is famed La Jolla. Worth a visit, but bit of a parking nightmare. And Carlsbad, a wonderful village to visit and stroll its ocean walk. Sandy beaches extend uninterrupted from La Jolla 40 mi north to Oceanside. Take your pick. Parking is usual criterion. The mile of beaches seen from the house are best bet. And have plenty of parking.

House is unique and enchanting to anyone who has resided. It has survived 2 teens and almost 50 years. And I am sure you will delight in it as all its occupants have.

The surrounding slopes and deck can be hazardous to young children. That is why I have to exclude them.

Please don't try to sneak in pets or allow visitors to bring them.

All this said, I am sure you will enjoy your stay as I and my family have for almost five decades.
