Some on the doorstep, others with a drive out. Whether it is walking the Shakespeare Way, visiting the nearby ancient Rollright Stones, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace, Royal Shakespeare Theatre, sports events like Cheltenham Races, cricket at Edgbaston, shopping at Bicester Village designer outlets or a bus from Oxford or fast train to London for the day. The recently renovated cottage sleeps 4/5 people – the perfect size for a break away with close friends or a romantic holiday with your partner. Rooms have been prepared with care and attention using subtle décor to reveal ageing wooden beams and beautiful Cotswold stone walls. Although Milestones looks small from the front, guests always comment on entering that it is so much bigger inside than they are expecting.
The lounge is spacious, carpeted and welcoming, centred on a large inglenook fireplace with a wood burning stove, ready to offer those perfect cosy evenings by the fire in the winter, with a DVD and perhaps a glass of wine! During winter months it is very warm and cosy but in the summer, because of the thick stone walls the cottage remains cool when it is hot outside. the perfect all year round choice!
The fireplace is ready to light, provided with a basket of logs and extra available to purchase from the owner. For visitors with young children we have provided a fireguard which fully encloses the inglenook and protects inquisitive youngsters from burning themselves on the hot stove. There is a large widescreen HD Television with Freeview, DVD and CD player. There are two comfortable sofas and an additional covered chair. Two table lamps and one floor lamp provide soft intimate lighting, but there are also brighter ceiling lamps to help with seeing the jigsaws on the coffee table or reading one of the many books to choose from.
The kitchen/ diner with tiled floor, is well equipped with a fridge, dishwasher, electric cooker, comfortable seating, crockery, glassware and cutlery for five people. Highchair also lives in the kitchen for use when required. Leading off from the kitchen there is a utility room containing a large ceramic Belfast sink, and drying space. The space also stores a washing machine and leads to a convenient cloakroom with a toilet, basin and coat hanging area. Leading through an oak door in the kitchen there is access to Milestones' own child and dog proof garden (unless you have a tiny dog, or one who jumps high) , with dining table and seating area to enjoy those long summer evenings close to the gas BBQ (Gas provided)! Small lawn to sit out in the sun alongside gravel driveway from the side of the house giving the cottage its own off street parking for at least three cars. One/two well behaved dogs are allowed (£20 extra) who may make good use of the hosepipe and outside tap after a good walk up the hills.
Upstairs there are two en-suite bedrooms. The spacious Master bedroom has (brand new for 2016) comfortable zip linked beds, made up as standard as a super-king size. Comfortable super-king sized quality bedding. On request at booking, this can be divided and made up as two single beds with single bedding. The en-suite has a large walk in shower space with toilet and basin. Single sofa bed is ideal for a child or small adult.
The twin bedded room is also spacious, enjoying wide views over the surrounding hills, the rooftops of the surrounding Cotswold stone properties and the garden. The en-suite bathroom has a small bath, toilet and basin.
Also space in either room for a cot.
Having previously owned and run several holiday letting properties, when the opportunity arose to purchase the lovely Milestones cottage, not at the other end of the country, but right on our doorstep, it was too good to miss. We had just sold our little restaurant in Stow on the Wold, so it was the perfect time for us.With our background in both hospitality and training, we love welcoming new guests for their holidays, aiming to make sure that nothing stands in the way of them having a good time.
Mrs Melanie Smart purchased this cottage in 2007
When we ventured into purchasing Milestones, although it had not been lived in for many years, we were fascinated by the delightful friendly feel that the building had. It just needed to be coaxed back into life and have one or two modern additions. We love it so much ourselves that we are just tempted to move into it ourselves at some point!
New en suite bathrooms and a new kitchen were added. Not forgetting of course the very popular wood burning stove. Just an addition to the efficient background heating. The location is just perfect for lots of reasons. Being convenient for driving to many towns and attractions has many advantages if visitors want to get about to a variety of places, as an alternative to being completely isolated. There are plenty of very rural walks around if visitors want to loose themselves in the beauty of the Cotswold Hills. Being just next door, we are usually on hand if there are any problems, but are very definitely not intrusive once visitors are arrived and settled.
Great couple of days with best friends and the dog! Cottage is very nice and welcoming. Red Lion also great. Thank you for a perfect stay!
A perfect family retreat if you want to chill out in the Cottswold and also plenty of stuff round and about if you want an activity based break.
We (a family of 5 with three kids aged 12, 9 and 6 from Germany) spent a wonderful week in this cottage. It is very tastefully furnitured and offers a little garden to eat outside. Melanie and David were perfect owners. They helped us with any question we had and provided us with a lot of good advice about what to do in the region.
Long Compton is a very nice small village with a nice church and a very good pub. It is easy to get to Stratford and Oxford. And London is within one hour by train from Banbury. The villages nearby are beautiful Cotswolds spots (Chipping Norton with a lovely book cafe, Stow on the Wolds a little bit too touristic from my point of view, Whichford with a nice pottery and cafe). If you like running the track via Barton is a nice one.
All in all, a clear five star recommendations. Lovely cottage, nice owners and a very good mix between local and somewhat longer excursions.
We can only repeat the praise for the virtues of this wonderful cottage - so warm and cosy in unpredictable April weather (snow on the first day!), so clean, comfortable and well equipped, and with such a helpful owner living next door. Easy parking, and secure garden - Bailey, our yellow Labrador, loved saying hello to the black Labs next door! Only slight disappointment: the whirlpool bath was out of action, but the shower was amazing, and the huge new bed fantastic!
The location is so convenient for the north eastern part of the Cotswolds (and much more besides); we also visited Evesham and looked - with limited success - for blossom! Batsford Arboretum is not to be missed (lots of blossom there!). Would have liked to try the local walks but unfortunately the fields were too muddy.
Thank you so much Melanie for a wonderful holiday - it was over far too soon!
We spent 2 very cold weeks in Milestones during January 2016.
We live most of the year in Normandy in France , but know this area very well as we used to live near Banbury.
Long Compton is very special: it has many lovely houses and more important The best village shop we have used, ever, in the UK-- it even has a post officer attached most days for speedy posting and reception of mail.
In addition the Red Lion is one of the best pubs in the Cotswolds-always open and always busy and loves dogs -everybody is happy and the food and staff are just the best..
Full marks to Melanie and her husband for doing a super job in modernising Milestones without losing its charm-;we were very happy there.
The deal was done because whilst we were happy to pay for any damage by our young Cairn dog and we were delighted that they and all in the village loved dogs.
It was cold weather for our stay -did it bother us? No way , we were too busy seeing all our friends in the Cotswolds and are very determined to return.
Thanks to Melanie for making it happen! Yes I have and will continue to recommend to our friends.

My family were so excited when we pulled into the drive to begin our stay at Milestones, even more so when we were given our tour by the lovely and very welcoming Melanie who lives next door. It was the perfect venue for a cosy Christmas with my loved ones. The type of cottage you would see on the front of a Xmas Card, beautiful bedrooms with lots of space and a cosy living room with plenty of character, the kitchen looked small on line but actually was rather big. Melanie couldn't have been more helpful from the minute we booked with her until the moment we drove away. I had a few requests before we arrived, one was buying and decorating our own Xmas tree which Melanie was more than happy to let us do even providing us with some of her own decorations & it was great to be able to carry on our family tradition! We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay, our Boxer dog Burt enjoyed his long walks with beautiful scenery, we made some trips to local pretty towns and spent Xmas morning at the local church. we would all love to return again, perhaps at a different time of year although it was simply perfect for a Xmas break:)
We had a lovely stay of 4 nights duration.
Cottage is very comfortable and clean and warm. We especially loved sitting in front of the fire in the evening.
It was a great place to stay with small children: there was a travel cot, high chair and stair gate - all the main necessities as mentioned in the description.
All mod cons to make it a home away from home including washing machine.
It was a great base to travel around the surrounding area.
The owner was very helpful and friendly.
We had early dinner in the local, Red Lion, which was v nice. A very nice lunch at a pub called The Bell, in Stow on the Wold and afternoon tea at Morton in Marsh.
I would definitely recommend staying here.
