Gite Solterre is located amongst the vineyards of the famous Gaillac wine producing area in the Tarn department of Midi Midi-Pyrenees. Gite Solterre was converted from an old winery into a luxurious two bedroom accommodation with a spacious lounge, underfloor heating, private plunge pool with saline water and walled terrace. Large about 60 sq metres (600 sq foot) open plan living room – dining – kitchen with high ceilings and large panoramic windows over the fields, hills and vineyard. Tiled floors. Comfortable TV area with plasma screen and two sofas. Large dining table with sitting for six; Tasteful combination of old and new. Brand new solid wood furniture. Modern kitchen and bathrooms. New appliances. Underfloor heating. British Freeview. WiFi. Plasma TV and DVD. Quality bedding, linen and toileteries provided. Suitable for elderly and wheelchair access (main door 80cm, all other doors 78cm, no steps inside the property).

The area north of Gaillac is full of gently rolling hills, green valleys and delightful medieval villages (bastides) and is often referred to as a ‘French Tuscany’. Some call it the “golden triangle” between Albi, Gaillac and Cordes-sur-Ciel. It is a perfect holiday base to explore the region full of history and natural beauty – forests, mountains, hilltop villages, great full and wine, Mediterranean atmosphere and climate.

An ideal location from which to explore the region

Exactly as advertised the property is well equipped, clean and comfortable. The owner is easily contactable should anything need attending to, though we did not have to take advantage of this. It is only a short drive to Cahuzac to pick up early morning supplies and the massive E.Leclerc in Gaillac is also easy to get to. Within easy reach lie many places worthy of a visit. We particularly enjoyed visiting the numerous villages dating from medieval times. It is a straightforward, scenic drive to get to St Antonin Noble Val for kayaking and Albi is very close. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gite Solterre and would recommend it to anyone wanting to spend time in a peaceful location in the heart of France.

No wow factor

First impressions were poor. Interior very dark, kitchen needed updating Hot plate and Oven looked dirty although

Really just too old. Main king size bed mattress far too thin and bed too low.

Plunge pool area very dusty which meant plunge pool base univiting.

General Furnishings very good and the water in pool itself was perfectly clean and regulated. Pool is overlooked by 3 separate lots of windows and the courtyard felt quite claustrophobic and retains heat good in winter but we stayed during heat wave. Main bedroom fan impossible to use.

Area very good for exploring old towns such as Cordes but after 3 days we were ready to move on. Ideal spot if you enjoy wine as surrounded by vineyards.

Owner's Response: Des, I was very disappointed to read such a harsh review, and I don't think it is very fair. It is pretty common in the South of France to keep the shutters on the windows & French doors closed during the heat of the summer, so that's why the interior appeared dark. The house is actually very bright and the reception room has 2 out of 4 walls full of windows. The cooker is indeed not brand new and has some minor scratches but I don't think many people would call it "very old". Photos of the kitchen on our listing are very accurate and all equipment still looks like on the images. I have spoken to the housekeeper about dusting the pool area better but as you appreciate it is usually a losing battle to fight with the wind and what it brings. The courtyard with the pool can hardly be called "claustrophobic and not private" and no-one has ever previously complained. 2 out of the 3 windows that overlook the area are in our main house and the shutters are almost always closed, the other window is of the WC in the neighbouring property, so no one ever looks from it. In addition to the courtyard our property has almost 2 acres of fields/orchard opposite that our guests can use. I have checked the fan and it is working. I'm glad that you found the property clean, convenient and the local area enjoyable. I haven't heard from you at all during your stay - I'm sure that if you had texted me or called me about your concerns we would have resolved them immediately.

Beautiful countryside

My husband and I loved the area, very peaceful and serene.

The house was very clean, newly remodeled. The kitchen has limited cooking equipment, but is adequate. The pool is very small and water is cold, obviously not for swimming. I was confused from the picture of a large pool on the website and almost tried to swim in the neighbors pool--an embarrassing moment when I was confronted by the owner. Not pleasant.

The restaurant and wine tasting suggestions were very helpful.

Thank goodness for GPS--not an easy location to find, but very charming.

Owner's Response: Dear Linda. Glad that you enjoyed the house and the countryside during your 4 nights stay. Pleased to see that restaurants and wine tasting suggestions were helpful. Not sure however what you meant by "limited cooking equipment" - the kitchen has all the appliances (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, over/grill, extraction hood) and we provide large amount of brand new pans/frying pans/baking trays, cutlery, spoons etc. In fact our previous guests (including those who lived in the house for a few weeks & cooked a lot) have praised the quality of the equipment and the thoughts that went into supplying the kitchen. I'm also puzzled about your pool comment - the advert/website clearly states that it is a plunge pool and we specify its dimensions. We only use the images of our pool. Sorry if you found the water cold - I can see in the historic weather data that the temperature during your stay was pretty hot - from 29-34C, so I'm surprised that you found this 3 metres x 2 metres plunge pool cold. Hope the rest of your European holiday went well and you returned safely to USA. All the best. George

Charming property, lovely position

Very well equipped, although I couldn't find a chopping board so had to chop on plates to make sure I did not scratch the kitchen surfaces. But otherwise I found everything we needed.

It is a charming place to stay because the high ceilings give it a real sense of space which is also helped by the fact that it is not over-furnished. The view is somewhat obstructed by the trees in front but one could see for miles by looking to the right

Our request for extra sheets was met promptly and efficiently and all emails were also answered promptly which is a great help when one is trying to synchronise dates and flights.

We hope to go back.....
