Luxurious gites with infinity pool surrounded by vinyards and fields - Le Laurier

Overview

Property

Updated: 22-Nov-2016
3 luxurious gites in the countryside, the perfect retreat for 6-8 people

Three spacious gites with large pool at 18th century former winery 'Le Trabet'. Surrounded by vineyards, woods, fields of sunflowers and wheat, in the sunny Languedoc Roussillon region of the South of France, in a beautiful setting, Le Trabet offers glorious views of the Pyrenees and the Black Mountains. Just some minutes' drive from Carcassonne, one hour to the Mediterranean beaches.

Toulouse is one hour away, Spain and Andorra are not far either. Restaurants, local markets and wineries are all to be found nearby.

Le Trabet offers the ideal combination of a restful and active holiday. Relax at the property or at one of the sandy beaches, take advantage of our bikes and go explore the surroundings, take a long walk in the uncrowded and unspoiled nature, dive into our infinity pool, enjoy the warm sun and the lovely view of the park.

Plan a visit of the village festivals, wander around the famous Cathar villages, explore the many castles and abbeys; choose from horse riding, playing golf, tennis and jeu de boules. Spend a day canoeing and boating on the Canal du Midi which is close by.

This region seems to be made for mountain biking or cycling: Almost every year the Tour de France passes through a nearby road. Many of our guests bring their own bikes and ride along the flat roads of the river Aude valley or go up the slopes of the Black Mountains - we also provide good quality bikes for free use by our guests.

One of the most beautiful golf courses of this region is close to Carcassonne. Every Tuesday and Friday morning the British golf club members play there, this is often followed by lunch at the golf club's restaurant. Our guests are cordially invited to participate.

The region has several other reputable golf courses, like the one in Mazamet. You may also wish to spend a day in Northern Spain, only 2 hours drive from Le Trabet, and play at one of the many marvellous Spanish golf courses.

Here is a small selection of the most sought-after places to visit: The medieval fortified cité of Carcassonne is one of France's most popular tourist attractions with many restaurants and shops, nestled along its medieval narrow streets.

Plan a visit to the remains of Cathar hilltop castles and abbeys. Get to know pretty villages like Limoux, well-known for its sparkling wines or go to Mirepoix, holding an attractive Monday morning market at the town square, surrounded by medieval houses with galleries underneath.

Andorra (the 'tax free' shopping paradise) combined with some walking/picnicking in the Pyrenees is worth a visit and not too far, you will enjoy driving along the pleasant winding roads up the mountains.

At the Canal du Midi harbour, not far from our property, one can rent a boat for a day or for some hours and enjoy the dappled shade of the large trees framing the canal while gliding along on the water.

About the Owner

We had been looking for a home in the south of France for several years and fell in love the first time we saw Le Trabet with its stone facade and blue window shutters.

Formerly, an 18th-century winery, it has been lovingly restored by the former owners to accommodate three luxurious gites. The estate is set in a small park with established trees and shrubs. The swimming pool is fabulous.

As to ourselves, we have traveled far and wide. We were both born in Germany, have lived in Wales and the US and are now happy to be at this beautiful property in the unspoiled countryside of the Aude province.

I spent nearly a week at Le Trabet and could not recommend a place any more! The property is absolutely gorgeous and furnished with taste, the owners are kind and extremely invested in the property and making sure guests have the best stay possible, and the nearby towns are accessible and quaint. There is enough to do both on and outside the property (not to mention a great pool!). Stay here if you want to truly experience countryside France!

Le Trabet is a beautiful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely two weeks at Le Trabet. The grounds were peaceful and well tended, the pool was wonderful and the accommodation beautiful, comfortable and very clean. The local area is perfect for family holidays with plenty to do and places to visit. There are many vineyards. However, what really stood out was the warm, friendly welcome we received from Claudia and her family, who were outstanding hosts. We would highly recommend Le Trabet.

Beautiful spot for seeing southwest France

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Le Trabet (the overall name of the property--each site is separately named). If you are considering a trip to the beautiful area around Carcassonne in Languedoc-Roussillon, this is the place for you. The gites are in a beautiful old country home down a little country lane. The house is perfectly situated for day trips in this interesting area. As you leave the house for your adventures, the snow-covered Pyrenees are clearly visible directly in front of you.

We stayed in Le Palmier. It has a large main bedroom and a large living room. There is a small additional bedroom. The fireplace in our bedroom had the date 1791 carved in it, but all of the units have been tastefully updated with modern conveniences. Each unit has its own little terrace area opening to the beautiful grounds. The owner, Claudia, is from Germany, but after many years living in the U.S. speaks perfect English, as well as French and Spanish. We had interesting conversations with her over wine and cheese at the ends of several of our days exploring the area. She brought us fresh bread on the days she was going to the bakery in a nearby village.

Carcassonne is the most famous site in the area, and it deserves its reputation. It is a beautifully restored medieval city with all of its walls and turrets in place. The gite was also a perfect base for day trips into the surrounding area which we found equally interesting as Carcassonne itself. There are many scenic places connected with the Cathars, an early Christian group that was wiped out by the Catholic church in the 1200's. The countryside is varied but consistently beautiful. This is the largest wine-producing area in France. We often took local wine, cheese, and bread for picnics along the way, but there are also three Michelin-starred restaurants within 15 minutes of the gite, so you can have it all--and without the crowds of tourists in more heavily visited areas like Provence.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Le Trabet is wonderful place to stay. The house, courtyard and gardens are very attractive. Our kids really enjoyed exploring the grounds. The pool, as the photo accurately depicts, is fantastic.

Laurier is lovely. It's tastefully decorated to a high standard and very well equipped.

We really appreciated the attention to detail and quality of both the gite and the wider property.

If you like cycling then it's an excellent base for riding in La Montagne Noire.

Location

From the Owner

A house of stone, built to last. Blue window shutters and fences reflect the colors of the sky. An old winery barn surrounded by meadows. A luxuriously big infinity swimming pool in a garden setting surrounded by conifers and fig trees. A view of the Montagnes Noires and the Pyrenees. What more could one want … maybe all those fantastic restaurants to discover, ranging from very inexpensive hidden local gems all the way up to the grandiose ones: five Michelin-star restaurants are to be found in the vicinity. There are small bars and cafés in every village, inviting you to stop and sit down among the locals. Not to forget the fascination of ancient ruins and Cathar castles …. And of course there is the constant invitation of the swimming pool and the soothing sound of the summer wind that plays with the trees -

Facilities

From the Owner

Le Trabet talks of happiness - leaving the road, driving along the gravel path, arriving at the blue iron gates, one feels transported to a different place altogether. Whether you look for the calm of the countryside or the proximity of local cafés and bars - or maybe you are fascinated by castles and canals - the days are too short to enjoy it all. You will love your stay - and at the end you will be sad to leave.
