Charming and unforgettable setting for an ideal vacation: refined and historic - Scuderia - Former stables of a Renaissance Villa. Sleep 5- Minipool

Overview

Property

Updated: 29-Nov-2016
Enjoys the best of 2 worlds: Florence's centre, peace of the Tuscan countryside

It offers 2 different accommodations: the Chapel and the Scuderia derive from the former Chapel and the former riding Stables of the Villa. They are self catering apartments in a unique location.

There are two bus stops in walking distance. A 15 minutes bus ride will take you into the city centre.

Stroll to the 'Ponte a Mensola' quarter, which is only 300 m. away, where you will find a grocery, a breakfast bar, restaurants, a tobacconist, a newsagent, a hairdresser and one of the two bus stops. A very large supermarket, a bank, a post office and a pharmacy are about 1 km away.

The Cathedral, Palazzo Vecchio, all museums are within easy reach, as are the nearby small towns of Fiesole and Settignano. The hill of Settignano, just behind Residenza Strozzi, preserves some of the most attractive Florentine villas.

Wonderful walks lead towards Settignano, Corbignano and, through of wood of cypresses, as so far as Fiesole. It was in these hills designed by man that Giovanni Boccaccio, Desiderio da Settignano, Bernardo and Antonio Rossellino, Michelangelo, Leigh Hunt, Charles Armitage Brown, Janet Ross, Edward Hutton, Mark Twain, Niccolò Tommaseo, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Bernardo Barenson and many others found their inspiration.

What a wonderful time we have had in the “Stables” . It's such an idiosyncratic and equally comfortable apartment. Guido you have been such a friendly and helpful host. “The Stables” is so well equipped with everything we wanted. What a lovely place to stay it has been. Dinners in the courtyard was truly memorable. Thank you for providing a place to have such a unique stay.

Beautiful setting. Very quiet . Gorgeous accommodation with a definite 'rustic' feel. It's not immaculate but that adds to the charm .Take mosquito repellant !

Perfecto!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I traveled Europe for 5 weeks last month. The only time we stay in one place for more than 2 days was at Scuderia for 8 days. During this time, our three adult children flew in to join us for 4 days, when we renewed our vows in a 1000 year old chapel on a hilltop nearby. This was possible only because Guido helped us secure the date and time at the chapel months in advance. Then the day of the wedding, our photographer did not show up! So Guido and Pia graciously grabbed their camera and took pictures for us, Guido even went to the chapel to take pictures during the ceremony. This man and his lovely wife made our time in Tuscany so special and truly something we will never forget. Thank you both!

Now, the property - We went before the tourist season really began, so we were the only ones there. The property was lovely. Clean, comfortable, and it worked just fine for 5 adults. Although, if the kids stayed any longer than the 4 days, we might of started to feel cramped. It had all the amenities you need, cook ware, plenty of towels, etc. The grounds were so nice to walk, the gardens private and relaxing. Parking was fine, and Guido was there to meet us with the key for the gates so we could come and go as we pleased. The walk to the closest bus stop is about 1/2 mile to go to Florence. (#17 runs all day/night) Just remember where you get off and on. The only time we had trouble getting back to the house, was when the taxi's were trying to find it. For some reason the address never came up correctly. So we started putting in the main cross street at the bottom of the main long drive into our GPS and never had a problem after that.

If you are looking for a quaint, magical, special place to spend your time in Tuscany, do not miss the opportunity to stay here! You will not regret it!

A gem of a property

  • 5 of 5

My family of four stayed at the Scuderia for four nights in March. We loved the property- indeed it was very picturesque and the view as you peer outside the door is just amazing! My kids thought that living in the stables was very cool and it was definitely a memorable stay. The only thing I want to point out is that the Scuderia has a completely open floor plan. So the main bedroom downstairs is completely visible from the upstairs. It was fine with us but it was a surprise so I thought I'd mention it. Guido was very helpful and he came to pick us up from the bus stop which seemed quite far from the property. We rented a car the next day and that worked out really well as they have free parking. Overall, a great experience. High;y recommend for an off the beaten path kind of experience.

Beautiful property

  • 4 of 5

The Stables are located on a peaceful and picturesque property. Guido was absolutely lovely, even driving us to a restaurant on our first night when we were feeling a little unorganized and lost. He spent lots of time giving us information about the area and assisting whenever we had questions.

Our children loved the property. They played for hours in the tree house in the olive grove.

Don't expect five star luxury. You will however have a great experience in clean and comfortable surroundings.

The mosquitos are a problem so be prepared and take insect repellent.

If you do not have a car, there is a bit of a walk to the bus stop through a field or down a long driveway and you will need a torch at night.

This was THE spot to stay.

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at about fifty hotels in the last ten years, and I've never had an experience so terrible that I felt compelled to complain online, nor have I been to a hotel that I really felt exceeded my expectations so thoroughly that I was inspired to sing its praises… UNTIL NOW! If you are visiting Florence, and you want to enjoy your stay, you should stay at Residenza Strozzi.

The property has everything I've ever wanted in a home away from home: It's quiet (Something to be valued considering Florence's reputation for night noise), It's air conditioned (something to be valued in Europe),It's beautiful (It's located on a large estate with a villa and an olive grove next door - the stuff of postcards.), and the location is prime for tourism - you're only fifteen minutes away from Florence's city center by bus. Also, If you need a supermarket, pharmacy, or pizza place there's one of each five minutes away too.

Finally, the service rivals anything I've had at a five star hotel: When my wife and I arrived, our host Guido came out to greet us, showed us our rooms (a chic refurbished stable with charming old world decor), and any time we required his assistance he was literally there in a maximum time frame of five minutes offering his assistance and coming up with helpful solutions. His English is almost fluent, and I believe he can also communicate in most other western dialects. I had the terrific luck of getting sick with a gastritis while in Florence, and Guido arranged for a doctor to make a house call to treat me.

In closing, I do not know when I will return to Florence, but I do know where I will be staying: Residenza Strozzi.

OUTSTANDING!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough good things about our stay. Everything was picture perfect. The villa was beautiful and rustic set in a picturesque olive grove with vineyards surrounding it. It is minutes from Florence and close to public transportation. Guido was very helpful and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable. I highly recommend staying here you will not be dissapointed.

HISTORY

During the Renaissance the Stozzi family were competing with the Medici family in richness and power. In 1489, Filippo Strozzi commissioned Benedetto Da Maiano and Simone del Pollaiolo, called “Cronaca” to build Palazzo Strozzi, in the centre of Florence, and it became one of the most significant examples of Italian architecture in the Renaissance. Villa Strozzi-Riccardi in Settignano has belonged to the same family for 6 centuries and was their country residence. Its history tells us that in 1379 the Villa was already in the possession of the Strozzi Family.

The Villa is linked to the popular uprising called “tumulto dei Ciompi”.

Scipione Ammirato in his XIV book of “Historie fiorentine” recounts that Mariano degli Albizi, accused along with his family of tyranny against the people, was in hiding at the Villa. Maddalena di Carlo di Strozza gave it as a present to her grandchildren Niccolo’, Lorenzo, Uberto and Tito di Giovanni di Carlo Strozzi who, in 1427, described it to the Land-Office as “uno chasamento in chontado chon pozi, loggia, corte, chasa da stalle (…)posto nel popolo di S.Martino a Mensola” (a house with a well, a loggia, yard and a stable(…) in the village of S. Martino in Mensola.

In the second half of the sixteenth century, Count Piero di Carlo of Andrea Strozzi made some changes that gave the villa its present appearance. At the beginning of the eighteenth century the Chapel was built, replacing a smaller one that was inside the Villa, and it was decorated with ceramics by Della Robbia (today lost).

In 1871 after the death of the Marquis Carlo Riccardi Strozzi, the Villa was inherited by part of the Strozzi family in Mantova. After the death of the last member of the the Strozzi family (marquis Uberto) the entire property was uninhabited for many years, and has only recently been restored to its former splendor.
