About the property

Fantastic location - 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom, beautiful, quite seafront apartment

This fabulous property has first position to the sea and is beautifully located in a small fishing village on the Southern coast of Croatia. Nestled peacefully right on the Adriatic sea, the apartment has wonderful views of the Dalmatian Islands – Hvar and Brac and the Peljasic Peninsula – with vineyards and picture perfect towns and villages dotted along the sea shore and is within easy access to the beautiful islands of Miljet, Korcula.

Komarna is a perfect touring base for so many daily excursions - in and around southern Croatia, most of which we have documented and leave in the apartment for you to review and choose yourself. There is so much to do in the area and a little further afield that it is hard to get everything in – the great islands, waterfalls, historic cities in Croatia and Bosnia and Roman ruins!

The apartment sits right on the village promenade which makes for a wonderful morning or evening walk – just after or prior to a little dip or hearty swim in the sea. A perfect way to start or end your day.

This apartment takes over the entire floor of the apartment complex and is ideal for those special family get-togethers like special birthdays or anniversaries. Modern and fully air-conditioned the apartments is airy and bright with 3 wonderful big balconies where you can sit and enjoy the peaceful and pretty surroundings.

It is part of a larger complex and has a fully equipped team of people to cater to your needs from arrival through to departure – these guys are there to help and can offer advice on tours, things to do as well as additional help on daily practicalities if and when you need it during your stay.

Komarna is in southern Croatia – with a coastline and views very similar to the southern coast of Italy. The weather is the same also – lots of long hot summer days, very little if any rain and beautiful breezes coming in from the sea. Dubrovnik is to the south of Komarna and requires a pass through the border with Bosnia – via Neum, a great town for restaurants and shops. Ston is on the Peninsula and is certainly worth a visit – it’s very like a ‘little Dubrovnik’ with fantastic salt! We always pick up a box of Ston salt on our visits there – fabulous to cook with. Of course Zadar and Split are two great cities to visit and they lie to the north, as is Mostor (with a fantastic new shopping mall!) in Bosnia.

Although Croatian wine isn’t as known or respected as Italian or French it is certainly improving all the time. Over the last 10 years we have been travelling to Komarna there has been a noticeable increase in the number of vineyard planting in the area. Komarna now has it’s own vineyard which is a must see. It’s very close to the apartment and they have wine tasting sessions on-going throughout the year – a real treat! The Peninsula is dotted with vineyards and more and more are opening their doors to wine tasting and purchasing direct – most will also sell red wine vinegar and some of the best olive oil in area – we pack our bags with oil every time we visit and reminisce about our holidays each time we open the bottle!

About Sinead Silke

We are an Irish family, who have enjoyed going to this spot in Croatia for the last 10 years. We have seen lots of changes over those years, with Croatia entering the EU, better infrastructure to help tourists get around the country, the food and wine has developed and a lot of time and effort has gone into the tourist industry here. Komarna is fast becoming an important wine region and in the last 10 years we can seen vast areas in the hills converting to winery's and olive groves. So although it has some way to go before it can compete with Italian and French wine, Croatian wine is developing and some really nice wines are coming out of the region. With all the development though, Komarna remains a beautifully peaceful spot to holiday in, with wonderful views - lovely food and plenty of sunshine!

As a family we love to travel - we like to go to some of the more unexplored places, rather than the more popular ones - which means the kids have seen more of the countryside than the big cities - which makes Komarna a special place for us and the kids.

Sinead Silke purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Sinead Silke chose Komarna

We thought this would be a great place for a family vacation, great weather, great area, great swimming, fishing, safe for children, nice walks for older family members and shop, restaurant and bars beside you.

What makes this apartment unique

One of our favourite pastimes while in Komarna is to sit on the balcony watching the sun go down over the bay, we're from Galway in Ireland so we are not easy awed by sunsets but these are truly spectacular. It's a great spot to use as a base for the many excursions available in the area, the history is amazing and totally unspoiled. The Croatians are always very hospitable and will go out of their way to ensure you have a good time.

By far the best thing about this apartment is it's location - you cannot get closer to the sea, we love to have a quick swim in the morning while the coffee is brewing and sit and relax with breakfast and watch the village wake up!

I have a guide on things to do and see in the area please ask for a copy!

Croatian Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Komarna is a lovely place and this is a really nice apartment. My favourite part of our holiday was getting out of bed in the morning and going straight in for a swim in the sea just below the apartment. Then coming up for a hot shower and a fresh coffee while sitting on the balcony looking at the beautiful view. I also loved the balcony in the evening having something to eat with a glass of wine. My only criticism is that the local shop only carries basic items and the supermarkets are 15 minutes drive away.

Great apartment in a quiet village on Dalmatia coast

  • 5 of 5

Really great apartment located about 90 mins north of Dubrovnik. The village of Komarna has a very picturesque outlook with a small pebbled beach, two restaurants (Uvala beach bar is an absolute must for a drink at sunset) and a really relaxed feel. Sinead was always prompt with email replies and provided lots of information. The apartment was well stocked (although one improvement could be two working bedside lights in the main bedroom and servicing of the air-con in that room). The view from the apartment is fantastic and the presence of a washing machine is a God send. The small shop in the village has great bread everyday and is really well stocked for a small village store. Make sure you head to Boarding House Kozina in Klek for dinner as they do amazing Seafood and Black risotto. Trips from Komarna include the must do boat trip organised through Uvala Beach Bar and definitely head to Mostar but leave at 8am to beat all the crowds, its well worth it. In summary this is a great apartment in a great location. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Hi Safet I am so disappointed and shocked to hear this as the cleanliness of the apartment is very important but safety is absolutely paramount to us. Had I know at the time of your visit I would have reacted immediately to ensure everything was dealt while you were in Komarna. We have used a new cleaning company this year and so far the review have been fine but we will be discussing this with them and trying to understand why the apartment was not 100% perfect which is our expectation. Please accept my apology for this and I do hope it didn't impact too much on your visit to Komarna - it is a wonderful place with so much to offer.

Lovely stay in a lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely two weeks in Paul's light, airy, spacious apartment with our three daughters and it was a delight to be able to walk down a couple of flights of steps to the warm, crystal clear sea. Komarna is a tiny village and not the place to go if you're looking for night life (we weren't!), although the beach bar does play music and is right below the balcony. It's a one shop, one restaurant, one beach-bar town with a little promenade, a diving board and a tiny harbour. A second beach is a 5 minute walk left along the sea front. The shop has a limited but adequate selection of goods to keep you going - fresh bread and pastries, fruit and veg, pasta, dairy (but only uht milk) drinks, ice cream, beach goods, toiletries and laundry items - when I asked about masks and snorkels they got them in for the same afternoon for us! The restaurant at Villa Bilis next door was very reasonable with a choice of items on the menu and large portions so some of us shared! Reception staff at Villa Bilis also very helpful and provided clean linen and towels on request and were a godsend when one of our girls went down with tonsilitis and needed antibiotics.

Paul provides a good guide to the area of things to do/see but a car is essential. Every journey involves going either north or south on the winding, coastal road which follows the coastline. You need a head for heights but the views along the road are spectacular. We visited Split (awful for parking and a nightmare to find your way around) Dubrovnik is a must and would recommend parking in one of the car parks and walking as it too is impossible to park in! Visit Ston with its ancient wall, the Peljesac peninsular and Orebic (again very high winding roads across the mountains) Prapatno beach (small but sandy), Trestno Arboretum (used in Game of Thrones), Bacine Lakes (watch out for the water snakes!) and go into Bosnia to Mostar and stop off at Pocitelj (medieval hill village) on the way. There was so much more we didn't get chance to see/do but thank you Paul for giving us the chance to experience what we did. All five of us thoroughly recommend Komarna Sunce 3!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

Really good apartment – very spacious and comfortable and it has a well-provisioned kitchen. The balcony is as good as it looks in the photos; a brilliant place to chill and have breakfast and to watch the sun set in the evening.

Komarna is a nice little town – just the one restaurant and a bar by the beach, so not somewhere to go if you’re looking for exciting nightlife, but the beaches are great for snorkelling and don’t get overly busy.

Komarna also well placed for getting out and about in both Croatia and Bosnia. Dubrovnik is an easy and beautiful 90 minute drive south and the coastal road to the north is stunning, with many towns on the way to Split (though the motorway is undoubtedly quicker you’ll miss some great views).

Also to the south is the start of the Peljasic peninsula which is well worth a visit (it’s about a 30 minute drive to Ston and then another 30 to Trstenic, which is a lovely town/village).

Bosnia is also within easy reach and crossing the border is no issue at all (at least with EU passports, can’t personally vouch for other nationalities, but no one seemed to be having an overly difficult time crossing). The Kravice waterfalls are about an hour away from Komarna and really are a must-visit – they are beautiful and great for swimming. Mostar is also very reachable.

There is a small shop in Komarna, which is useful for topping up supplies, but for larger shops there are large supermarkets (Konzum and Lidl) in Metkovic, a 25-minute drive away.

Paul has also provided comprehensive guidebooks in the apartment to give you an idea where you might like to head for – but there really is so much to see nearby that we hardly even scratched the surface in two weeks – definitely need to return!

Beautiful location, lots to see and do around

  • 4 of 5

Property was exactly as described and as pictured. Couldn't have been closer to the sea.

All clean and well maintained, and furnished to a good standard - no complaints, although a couple more chairs, inside and out, would be ideal.

Very responsive and helpful owner - provided an extensive guide to places of interest across the local area - which were fantastic. For anyone visiting in summer who likes to swim, Bacina Lakes and Kravice Waterfalls are well worth the journeys - and we found a lovely sandy beach at Prapratko (next to Ston, which was also lovely). The sea, and the lakes we swam in, all really clean and clear.

Komarna itself has limited facilities: one small shop, one restaurant (Villa Bili), two beach bars, and two busy (in July) pebble beaches (one very small). But it's lovely, and the views and sunsets are reliably stunning.

Local Komarna village shop surprisingly good, plus good supermarkets 20 mins away in Metkovic / Opuzen / Ploce. Croatia significantly cheaper than Western Europe - and Bosnia hugely cheaper...

Travelling into Bosnia easier (and generally felt safer) than we'd expected, but the border crossing at Metkovic could be slow - took an hour on one occasion. Much faster at Neum. Hire cars need extra insurance for Bosnia - cost about €30 at pick up (in fact we were never asked to produce it, but you could have a really bad day if stopped in Bosnia or in a crash without it). Bosnian roads ok - surprisingly well signed.

Overall, a fantastic place to stay for a week - amazing scenery and lots to see and do in the wider area for anyone active / interested in history.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review and especially for choosing my apartment and I am delighted that you enjoyed your holiday. It is a great part of the world. Even though I have been visiting myself for the past 10 years I have not had a swim on the beach beside Ston As I will visit in again in October that is now on my list! Thanks again and safe travelling. Paul

Car: recommended

Geographically Komarna is 5 miles north of Neum in Bosnia, 3km from a small town, Klek, it is set about a mile off the Dubrovnik to Split road and approx. half way between the two. The village is a 35 minute drive to Medjugorje in Bosnia Hertzegovina. The village is back-dropped by an impressive untamed mountain range with local vineyards at the foot of the hills. The area is very rich in culture and a day trip to the old town of Dubovnik and Ston are highly recommended. The apartment is air conditioned and has external shuttering on all windows so it is very comfortable even on the hottest days. The apartment is on the first floor of the complex and is just 28 steps from the Adriatic. The apartment has access to an indoor pool from June to September and a Gym for a small additional charge. Both facilities are owned and maintained by a separate apartment complex however they are available for our guests. Opuzen a small town is 15 minutes by car and Metkovic and Ploce about 30 minutes. Transport to and from the airport can be arranged.

Other Activities: Most water sports
