a character stone-built cottage in a peaceful village setting

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

Minimum Stay
7 nights

About the property

1 Large bedroom with TV/Sitting area, 1 bathroom, sleeps 2

The property is stone built and attached to the owner's barn, so there are no directly attached neighbours. It has a small private garden which catches the afternoon sun, as does the balcony. It dates from the mid 1800's, and is situated within the quiet rural village of Fresnes, close to Montbard and its TGV station. The house contains typical period features (e.g. stone fireplace, and beautiful oak beamed bedroom) and has been tastefully renovated and modernised to include gas-fired central heating. The bedroom covers the entire upper floor and contains a sitting area for reading or watching the TV (DVD player attached). The downstairs comprises of the Kitchen/Diner (Kitchen refurbished with built-in units March '09); with its original flagstone floor and a wood burning stove, leading to a separate sitting room, and the bathroom with shower and toilet.

Visiting Tradesmen: The village benefits from the visit of two boulangerie vans each day, and also a butcher twice per week

Wine Tasting & Purchasing: The owner can provide personal recommendations for wine tasting visits and 'best value' local wine purchases.

Beautiful gite, great host, gorgeous village

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this lovely gite from 3-10 September 2016. The accommodation had everything we needed including an extremely well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a shower that made you want to stay for a while, and a huge bedroom at the top of the house with wooden beams and a place to sit and relax while reading or watching TV. This was the best place for WiFi although it was often a little hit and miss but fortunately we didn’t mind that! The small wisteria-covered balcony was a perfect place to sit at the end of the day, watching the sun go down while taking in the peace, quiet and beauty of this gorgeous village in a really beautiful lush green area of Burgundy.

It was a real pleasure for us to meet Bernard and he could not have been more helpful and friendly. He has provided an enormous amount of information for visitors, and during our week we managed to visit Noyers-sur-Sereine, the Abbaye de Fontenaye, Semur-sur-Sereine, and Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, as well as a trip to Dijon by train from the station at Venarey-Sur-Laume which took about 30 minutes. A highlight of the week was the tour of Fresnes with Bernard and hearing about the history of families who have lived in the village for hundreds of years, and also being able to go inside the ancient village church where he demonstrated the workings of the church clock.

By the end of the week we were completely relaxed and didn’t want to leave. A week is not long enough to explore everything this area has to offer and we would definitely like to stay here again.

Merci beaucoup Bernard. (The Reine Claude jam was wonderful!)

A delightfully clean and well-equipped cottage in an idyllic rustic setting - where else would you get a visiting hen coming to share your evening meal as you ate outside? The bedroom is large, light and fresh; the kitchen is perfect and the bathroom has a very good shower. The lounge is very comfortable although we sat outside in the well-sheltered courtyard. The owner, Bernard, is extremely friendly and helpful and has superb knowledge of places to visit (including chateaux and medieval villages) as well as restaurants in the area. He also provides an endless collection of leaflets, maps and bochures.

There is so much to see in the area that one week is not enough but I cannot emphasise adequately the sheer peacefulness of this village.

Very nice cottage in a good location

  • 4 of 5

Fresnes is a pleasant little village near Montbard, very close to the top attractions of Fontenay and Alesia, and a 30 minute train ride from Dijon. The cottage, though small, is comfortable and well equipped - comfortable bed, several places to sit and relax, and the usual facilities (though note: it does not have a garden, just a small gravelled area to sit out in). The owner could not be more helpful. An ideal base from which to explore northern Burgundy!

C'est Magnifique!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week in this superb gite/cottage in the lovely hamlet of Fresnes - very spacious for a 1 bed, good suntrap to sit out and catch the late afternoon sun, beautiful bedroom and a very tranquil feel.

Bernard is indeed a superb host, extremely friendly and helpful but in no way invasive. There's a wealth of info within the cottage on the surrounding area, and we certainly found a number of lovely old villages to visit, local chateau and of course the magnificent Abbaye de Fontenay. Seeing (and straddling!) the source of the Seine was kind of cool, and the whole area has a wonderfully relaxed and peaceful feel.

The cottage is very well equipped with excellent kitchen and dining area, superb shower, great bedroom and pretty much all the home comforts you could ask for. The only watch out is that the wifi doesn't really work, but in many ways that's a blessing as kept the "other" world away and allowed us to totally relax and enjoy the area, the village and the gite. Big old double-thumbs recommendation from us! (J&S, Norfolk)

Lee and I had a wonderful time in this beautifully appointed gite. Bernard our host was charming and extremely helpful, recommending many things to do in the area. The restaurant that he recommended was superb! the verdant rolling hills and picturesque historical towns were delightful to explore. Thank you Bernard!

Great property , excellent value for money

  • 5 of 5

Arriving by bicycle and needing a comfortable place to stay we were extremely happy to have discovered this lovely cottage. Everything we could have hoped for was provided even baskets of wood for a cheerful fire. . Bernard our host was extremely helpful in providing historical information and ideas for trips in the area and the most picturesque routes for the cyclists. Others staying here had recorded their satisfaction in the visitors book. Bernard really contributed much to our French experience thanks Bernard it was truly relaxing interesting and so very comfortable. Highly recommended if you want to stay in a cottage that is very well maintained, in a beautiful area close to places of historical and cultural interest.
