Large attractive villa with large pool and panoramic views one hour from Rome

Overview

Property

Updated: 06-Nov-2016
Large 5 bedroom 3 bathroom villa with large pool mountain views, sleeps 10/11

The house is situated on the slopes of the Cimini mountains, with truly breathtaking views in all directions of rolling countryside and mountains, 10 minutes from the beautiful medieval town of Soriano. It sits surrounded by it's own lawns, meadow, olive groves, fruit trees and nut orchard in a quiet rural location, with masses of space for kids to roam safely to their hearts content. At various times in the Summer you can help yourselves to cherries, apples, apricots figs, giungiole (delicious local fruit), pears, hazelnuts and our own market garden.

It is 20 mins from the medieval papal city of Viterbo, 30 mins from scenic Orvieto, 1 hour from the Tuscan seaside, 2 hours from Florence and an hour north of Rome by car. By train from the nearby station at Orte, you can get to Florence in an hour and Rome in 35 mins. It is situated in beautiful countryside, very similar to neighbouring Umbria and Tuscany but far less touristy. Soriano itself is a very friendly local market town with all the necessary amenities and shops. It sports some excellent yet reasonably priced restaurants. There's lots of good eating in surrounding towns. The area is known for its many thermal springs. Nearby are the Lakes di Vico and Bolsena (great for visiting, eating by the water and swimming/water sports in the summer) and chestnut/beach forests on the Monte Cimini (great for long walks in the mountains). La Fagetta, the summit of the highest Cimini mountain is a 20 minute drive from here with the most spectacular views - a truly magical place in the evenings with it's huge beach trees, carpets of wild flowers and a good restaurant to come down to at the end of it al!

Soriano-Chestnut Festival(Sagra di Castagne): This takes place in the first two weeks of October, which usually sport excellent weather. There are medieval pageants and contests between the quartiere/rione of the town most nights in the main square in Soriano (See photo). The whole community get together to perform, provide typical local food (eaten together in great cellars and halls), joust, and run Soriano's own palio (horse race). This is the best time to get a real feel for the local life and community - a really heartwarming experience - and free chestnuts! This period tends to get booked early.

The house is very spacious with plenty of room for kids ( and adults) to play inside as well as out. There are 4 large double bedrooms and a 5th with bunk beds. There is a further space for sleeping in the large playroom where there is a table tennis table and table football. There is a also a cot bed and a Z bed. We have 2 large communal bathrooms. One has a large modern shower (refurbished this year), the other a lovely truly huge bath. The master has an ensuite bathroom as of 2016. There is also an outside shower by the pool.

We have a huge south facing sun terrace with a covered eating area which has wonderful views across the pool, nut orchards and the Tiber valley to the Appenine mountains beyond. This is a wonderful place to eat long holiday lunches in the shade or the sun as you wish. In the evenings it is beautifully lit and even nicer for eating al fresco looking out at the stars. There is also a lovely covered loggia (with a great view of La Fagetta and the castle at Soriano) for a quiet place to read or a late afternoon snooze. It also has a large outside fireplace for cooler evenings.

The pool is large, surrounded by plenty of sunterrace and is also in a great spot (a real sun trap), but also has a lovely view for miles. There is a diving board and convenient steps in for little ones.

We are also 50 mins from the nearest beach of Sant'Agostino if you want a day at the seaside. It is a large and long sandy beach with areas that are managed (where you have to pay) and large unmanaged stretches. The water is clean and very safe for little ones as it only gets deep slowly. There is an excellent and reasonably priced seafood restaurant and number or bars/cafes. The Tuscan coast is 80 mins away - great for a day out. It's a huge space with plenty of bars or restaurants at one end, or a more quiet rural setting at the far end. We go several times a year! The lovely town of Tarquinia is very near and definitely worth a visit (for dinner too if you want) before coming back. There's a wonderful fish maket just down the coast at Civitavecchia or the Tuscan coast is a further 45 minutes the other way.

Near Terni, 1 hour towards the central mountains, are the highest waterfalls in Europe - definitely worth a visit.

Lake Bolsena is a 40 minute drive - it is cradled in the crater of a huge (extinct!) supervolcano. Truly spectacular views are to be had all round - there are beaches, watersports, many good restaurants (some on stilts out in the lake) and boats for hire to explore the little islands out in the lake.

Nearby to Bolsena is the famous 'dying town' of Bagnoregio (Bognor Regis!). A truly spectacular and extraordinary medieval citadel on a rocky promontary out into the Tiber valley only accessible by a narrow footbridge. A must see and a great place for lunch. It is gradually being eroded - bits from the edge fall off each year in the rains and plunge hundreds of feet down into the ravine below. We go every holiday!

Proprietor speaks English, French, Italian, and some German.

Local agent Floriana speaks fluent English. She is a local tour guide and can arrange tours for our guests around the medieval heart of Soriano and many other local sites. Her mother provides exellent traditional pasta making lessons - great fun for adults and children alike. She is a mine of information for local travel and activities/sites to visit and for any info you need re getting to Rome etc. We'll give you plenty of info re the local restaurants.

About the Owner

We are Pete and Ingrid Glenister. Above is a photo of our family at our excellent local pizzeria, where any guest of ours will be royally treated by Nereo and Mary - good friends (and neighbours) of ours. The villa is our home in Italy. We love it very much.

We are based in London, but now spend a couple of months a year in our villa restoring and improving her or on holiday with friends.

We both grew up nearby.

I am a qualified doctor, but have given up medecine to become a songwriter and record producer. My wife does the serious work, bringing up our children and working for a local old peoples charity.

We have been renting out the spare time at the villa since 2007.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We taken in by the rustic beauty of the villa and it's splendid views. Perfect tranquility here (when kids are not too noisy!!!). Perfect location, surroundings and access to local attractions. Loved the curious but delightful hot springs, the Parco di Mostri, Capodimonte (Pedalos and Motorboat!!)....Could have/ should have done much more - will leave it for next time....Had spent 3 amazing days in Rome before coming here for 9 nights, so just when you think you're all settled and relaxed, it's time to go home :( Kids have loved the pool here - thank you - and have enjoyed all that Rome's surroundings have to offer and wish to return!!!

Lovely property but some drawbacks.

  • 4 of 5

Lovely bedrooms and lounge but kitchen was very small for 9 people. Wasn`t very suitable for small children (ours were 2, 3 and 5). We

had to barricade the bars in the play area upstairs as they could squeeze through and fall on to the stairs.Pool and grounds were attractive. The children enjoyed collecting hazelnuts. Unfortunately we could not eat outside in the evening because of mosquitoes. As there was hardly any mosquito protection on the windows or doors it could get very hot and unpleasant particularly in the kitchen.

Floriana was marvellous, very helpful, made a list of places the children might like (they especially liked the `Monster Park`).

We went to Soriano,Viterbo,Orte and also Orvieto which we thought was delightful.(over 50mins according to Google Maps-not 30).

We didn`t realise we even had to cook in bottled water - takes a lot of water for pasta for 9. We found it a nuisance having to collect water all the time.We would have preferred to be told about the water and the 100 euros cleaning fee BEFORE finally booking.

Owner's Response: In response I would just like to point out a few points. In regard of the cleaning , it was stated in the information on the Homeaway website that cleaning is charged on arrival. This is normal for this kind of property. I am sorry you didn't find that section - it is less clearly found since the website structure has been changed! We will be at pains to explicitly point it out to future guests. The cooking water issue is very common in this (and many other ) parts of Italy. Here the local water comes from volcanic rocks and therefore requires purification. It is distributed free to all the locals (and so our guests) and so does need to be collected. It means you don't need to buy bottled water. I'm sorry that you struggled with mosquitoes. We normally have very few because of where we are. I'm minded that none of our previous guests have had the same problems, above and beyond what anybody would expect on a mediterranean holiday. When it is hot our previous guests with children have normally eaten outside having taken appropriate precautions, as we do.There are mosquito tablet machines in every room provided free, and pendant insect prevention screnes on both outside doors downstairs. This normally allows very good ventilation of the downstairs area without very unsightly mosquito mesh on the windows. Again I'm afraid nobody has had a problem with the banister over the stairs before, but we will be at pains to address any safety issue regarding children finding their way between them when we visit next week. I'm sorry if this was a worry. We are glad you liked the house, grounds pool and surrounding area.

A lovely relaxing villa, very private rural location, but easy access to surrounding areas.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely relaxed villa, in a very private rural location, but superbly placed for easy rail access to Rome and Florence (12 euros for a day ticket to Rome, including public transport in the city) and a short drive to the lovely city of Orvieto. La Faggeta forest and restaurant, just 20 mins drive, were a big hit. A car is essential.

We were a family of 6 adults and 4 kids aged 2-9. The older kids loved the pool, and all enjoyed roaming in the huge garden and climbing the big, very laden cherry tree. There are several different areas to the villa, where we could all spend time together or escape for a bit of peace, so it works well for a big group. The outside covered eating area was a bonus for cover on both those hot days and the couple of heavy downpours we had, and we enjoyed several al-fresco meals taking in the beautiful peaceful countryside and views.

The villa is very well-equipped, and well stocked with books, games, toys and DVDs, and the table football and ping pong were also a hit.

Flori was very warm and welcoming, and a great source of information on the locality via WatsApp , although we were happy to spend a few days just relaxing around the villa and enjoying the family being together.

Having to get bottled water wasn't too much of a problem, as we just refilled the bottles (for free) at the nearby village of Sant' Eutizio. We also discovered a shop selling wine on tap for 1 euro here, sadly on our last day!

All in all, Casa Glenister is a great place for a relaxing family holiday, at a reasonable price, and in a good location for attractions further afield if desired.

Owner's Response: Many thanks Philip for your wonderful review. As you can imagine we've come to love it there. There's so much to do around there as well as just chilling by the pool or going to Rome, lakes or seaside. We were a bit put off by the water thing at first, but then we never drank the tap water in Italy anyway (on holidays previous to having our own place). It's great that the local council provide free purified water - all you have to do is collect it! We hope you'll come and visit us again sometime soon. Regards Pete and Ingrid

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our 1 week stay at Casa Glenister. On the lead up to our stay Ingrid and Pete quickly answered any queries we had and gave all relevant information as required.

We travelled as a group of 9 (6 adults, 2 children and a baby). The house is set out of the way a bit so a car would be required, although my parents did walk to both Sant Eutizio and Soriano. It is set out with nothing but trees around and a couple of other properties dotted in the landscape so you definitely get to get away from it all. The house itself has everything you need with a dining table both in and outside, a large living room and a games room upstairs with table tennis and table football for the cooler days or evenings. It is also well equipped with regards to cooking with a large fridge, good cooker and plenty of crockery and cutlery supplied.

A short drive out gets you to Sant Eutizio where there is a restaurant and a shop, but we found these to be of low reliability, so a slightly further drive in either direction will take you to Vasanello or Soriano where there are more shops, restaurants and sights to see. While we were there Floriana was very good with providing help, advice and recommendations.

The villa was clean throughout and beautiful too with the many flowers and plants along the terraces and the trees surrounding it. We are fully booked for next few holidays but we are already discussing as a group as to when we could return to this wonderful place.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your kind review of our Italian home. We are always working to make being there nicer and more fun so I do hope you'll come and visit us again sometime soon. There's a lot more to see in the local area. 2017 we'll also have a new kitchen. Cheers Pete and Ingrid

Beautiful house in idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

We has a fantastic week at this property and would not hesitate to recommend it. The house is very well furnished and equipped, and the outside areas/terrace/balcony and around the pool are perfect.

The children loved the pool, which has a diving board and is lovely and warm & clean. There are plenty of sun loungers and seating areas and the area is unspoilt and rural, however, only a few minutes away from the nearest town & supermarket. We also caught the train into Rome for a day trip, it was very simple to do (even for us!) and certainly worth the trip, but I did look forward to getting back to the house in the country and cooling off again in the pool.

Very easy to find thanks to detailed instructions by owners. Flori, who welcomed us in to the property, was a real gem and offered lots of help & advice while she got us settled.

In summary - lovely house, great location, lots of space and great facilities. It was very clean and the service provided by Flori & Ingrid were perfect. Highly recommended.

Relaxing vacation in beautiful villa

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a wonderful week's vacation in Casa Glenister! We loved everything about this place: the house, the setting, the weather, the easy access to beautiful hilltop villages, gorgeous landscape and excellent food at very decent prices.

We were two families with teenage daughters, 8 persons in all. We researched probably 100 houses before chosing Casa Glenister, which turned out to be the perfect choice for us. Ingrid and Peter were very helpful and accommodating from the initial contact until well after the trip :) They really go out pf their way to provide everything you need to enjoy your vacation.

Our requirements were:

1. Two separate areas with bedrooms and bathrooms, to allow each family some privacy. The two-floor layout of this house was ideal.

2. A swimmingpool with a deep end and diving board, to keep kids entertained throughout the week

3. Free views from the house across the countryside

4. A private, quiet location

5. Restaurants and shops nearby

Casa Glenister hit the spot, with many added bonuses:

1. Flori, the local contact person who is also a certified guide. She is so lovely and helpful. We booked a full day's guided tour with her, definitely the highlight of our trip. Her knowledge added another dimension to our stay. She took us to the Dying City (candidate for the UNESCO world heritage list, http://www.lifeinitaly.com/tourism/lazio/civita-italy.asp), Lake Bolzano and the Baslilica and catacombs in that town, a lovely lake-side restaurant with a delicious five-course menu for €25, and finally a wine tasting "on top of the world" at Palazzo dei Papi.

2. The surroundings were even more beautiful and interesting than we expected. We took a day trip to the world's highest man-made waterfall (also Europe's highest), visited local villages, castles and renaissance gardens.

3. Excellent food at non-tourist prices. We used the "Slow food guide" and were pleased to find many recommendations in the nearby villages. All of them excellent! For instance, an incredible truffles pasta dish for 8€ in nearby Orevieto. Amazing!

We would lounge around and enjoy the pool until early afternoon, when we would usually venture out on some excursion. With the short distances to everything you really can get a lot done. The children also used the games room for ping pong every day. Never a dull moment, yet a very relaxing vacation!

We certainly hope to return to Casa Glenister!

A real find!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect for kids - the best villa pool we've swum in (super-clean, kid-friendly steps into the shallow end, mini diving board, plenty of shade/pool furniture) plus an excellent games room for when the sun got too much or the odd shower passed over. Simple but tasteful decor with lots of lovely personal touches made us feel instantly at home. Incredibly peaceful setting but close enough to venture out for the day to some of the amazing towns, villages and restaurants in this region. Received a delightful welcome from Floriana and Maria - thank you! And thanks, too, to Ingrid and Pete for the incredibly thoughtful and accurate directions to the property. Made the journey so much easier! Had thought that having to use only bottled water would be a bit of a pain but we soon got used to it and filling up our empty bottles in the local square proved something of a highlight for the kids! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Casa Glenister to any family searching for a true slice of Umbrian life, but with some real home comforts thrown in.

Location

From the Owner

We bought the house near Soriano because we had some Italian friends who have a house not far away and they showed us around the area. We loved it straight away as is not at all touristy but only an hour from Rome - our favourite city. We had also had many holidays in nearby Orvieto. So we can stay in a beautiful villa, sample authentic Italian life amd visit Rome whenever we feel like it. You can go by car or by train from Orte (35mins to centre) - you can also get to Orte from Fiumicino airport directly by train which is very convenient for visiting friends. We now have many friends in and around Soriano - the local people have been very friendly and welcoming to us. We've discovered the local lakes and mountains - also the seaside is now (due to a new fast road) accessible in under an hour, so we go quite a bit.

We are situated near Soriano nel Cimino, on the border between Lazio and Umbria near the historic papal city of Viterbo and within easy reach of Rome (one hour's drive away, 35mins by train from Orte). Orvieto, Todi and the Lazio/Tuscany coast and beaches are all short drives away. Hadrian's palace at Tivoli is also an hour away and a brilliant day out - just as extensive and interesting as the forum in Rome.

Florence and Sienna are both under 2 hours by car and less by train.

Soriano is the nearest town. It is an extremely pretty medieval walled town perched on the side of the Monte Cimini, with castle and amazing panoramic views of the Tiber valley and Appenine mountains beyond. It has excellent restaurants and food shops. It has a 12th century castle crowning the old town. Behind it is the summit of the extinct volcano at Fagetta - a magical mountain walk with beautiful views, carpets of wild flowers and a great restaurant at the end of it!

Viterbo has great shopping as of course does Rome. It is also a wonderful historic walled Medieval (and rather undiscovered) city, with papal palace and many places of historic interest. It also sports famous volcanic springs and spas. The Cimini mountains and beautiful Lago di Vico are close by as are Monefiascone and the Lago di Bolsena.

Bolsena is a huge clean lake in the crater of an extinct volcano, great for all watersport activities in the summer with amazing views all around. The town of Bolsena itself is a lovely little town with beach, pedalos and a good fish restaurant on stilts out in the lake! It also has a lovely castle.

The 'dying' city of Bagnoreggio is nearby and a truly spectacular sight. It has been gradually falling into the ravine it is surrounded by - quite an extraordinary sight.

Golf at the world renowned course of Le Querce at Sutri is a 20 minute drive away. It is an ideal location for discovering Rome and then spending time relaxing around the pool, walking in the mountains, and soaking up life in a typical friendly unspoilt but beautiful area.

During the summer months, you will find there are many 'sagra''s (festivals) celebrating local produce e.g. wine, cheese, fish and sausages etc. in local towns and villages and they are a wonderful opportunity to sample the customs and flavours of the area. Soriano in particular has a wonderful medieval chestnut festival in the first 2 weeks of October. The whole town is decorated in period and there are entertaining medieval re-enactments and displays. Great to see a truly Italian community of all ages enjoying itself together without any nod to tourists! Life affirming....

The nearest beaches are 1 hours drive away - S Agostino has an enormous child friendly beach with great beach bars and restaurants. Tarquinia is a beautiful ancient town nearby and a great place to stop off for a visit or a meal on the way back. There are many Etruscan caves to visit here - a tour can be arranged by Floriana!

Other Activities: Thermal baths in and around Viterbo (20 mins), famous Parco di Mostri at Bomarzo (15mins), Villa Lante with it's world famous gardens at Bagnaia (20mins).

Golf: Le Querche golf course is at Sutri, which is roughly 25 mins drive away. It is simply one of the best Golf courses in Italy, and great fun to play! It can be checked out at their website www.golflequerce.it There is also a good course at Tarquinia ,45 mins drive and many around Rome which are around 1 hour or so away.

Facilities

From the Owner

When we first visited the villa we just loved the peace and quiet, the space and the truly spectacular and ever changing view. We love to eat great food outside with a wonderfull view - we can do that there to our hearts content, (much of it we grow on site!). Giovanni (Floriana's father) will also bring you fresh vegetables from the vegetable gardens when he's got more than he can eat! We can swim in the pool (which shares the same view) before and after. It's great place to be if you want to be somewhere fairly quiet, private and beautiful, but want to be able to visit Rome/Florence/Sienna/Orvieto or Viterbo as well. Also it's near the seaside, the lakes the mountains and the thermal springs at Viterbo - so there's always lots to do for both adults and kids if you want to go out for the day. Mostly though it is a great way to spend some time in a friendly atmosphere, sampling good Italian life without being in a touristy environment. You'll be well looked after by an English/French speaking hostess (Floriana) who is a local tour guide who can point you towards whatever activity you might want to do. She will also provide fully guided tours (she is a qualified tour guide and a mine of local information) to local sites if you want to book her. It is a large spacious villa with lots of room for kids to play inside (large games room with table tennis and table football) or outside (lots of land and a pool).

Notes:

  • Smoking is not absolutely forbidden but we would prefer if done outside. Although children are welcome you must be aware that the pool area is not enclosed and there are (gated) steps leading down to the pool area, so vigilance is required. The games room is a big bonus for those not so good days . We have a full sized ping-pong table, and a table football table in a large games room upstairs - so plenty to do for kids if it rains (not often in spring and summer!). There is lots of land for the kids (and adults) to explore, open grassy spaces to play or quiet places to relax. There is a first floor loggia with spectacular views. Giovanni who looks after the estate, has a large kitchen garden, and will often let you pick your own fresh vegetables when they come ready! Floriana who will welcome you to the house, is a local tour guide and will tell you all about the many wonderful things to do locally and in Rome. As the house is set in the countryside a car is a necessity.
