'Kabarole' is a new barn conversion creating a comfortable and spacious holiday home. It has complete privacy from the beautiful 12th Century 'manoir' sharing the same property and overlooks acres of meadow in the valley with mature trees and sheep. The living/dining room with stone fireplace is over 6Osqm. A mezanine area upstairs has WIFI access, TV/DVD and games for children. All ground floor rooms (including two bedrooms) open out on to a south-facing veranda which runs the full length of the building. The house is easily accessed by wheelchair and one bathroom has been specifically designed for people with disabilities. The occupants can choose to have exclusive use of the 6 x 12m swimming pool which has been built into the hillside above 'Kabarole'.

Access: There are three airports within easy reach of Ribérac (no more than 90 minutes drive). Bergerac is the closest and now served by both Ryanair and Flybe flying to many UK destinations including London Stansted, Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Leeds, Liverpool, Nottingham and Southampton. Mérignac Airport at Bordeaux is served regularly by Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and many other airlines operating across Europe. Angoulême will be opening to flights from the UK in 2008. Several car hire companies service both Bergerac and Mérignac Airports.

Trains run to Angoulême (from Paris and Bordeaux) and Périgueux (from Lyon and Paris via Limoges).

Siorac de Ribérac: 'Kabarole' is a comfortable holiday home created from a barn conversion 2005-2006. It is located next to La Meynardie, a local 'manoir' of considerable charm and character which dates back to the 12th Century. The manoir has had a close historic association with the Romanesque church of Siorac de Ribérac which is perched on the hillside a short walk up the valley. The village of Siorac de Ribérac is situated on the 'Circuit Roman' which attracts a number of visitors to the historic church especially during the summer. Siorac hosts a four day fête every year in July which is a popular event in the region. The village now has a very attractive restaurant/bar with tables available outside in summer. Siorac is six kilometres south of Ribérac which has excellent shopping facilities, restaurants and a renowned Friday market which spreads through the town.

Local area: Siorac de Ribérac is on the edge of the Forêt de la Double, a nature reserve of woodland, lakes and small roads well suited to walking, cycling and the chance to see wild boar, deer, as well as a wide range of bird life. The nearby lake of La Jemaye and the river Dronne offer scenic picnic sites, canoeing, swimming,fishing and other recreational activities.

The cathedral city of Périgueux is 30 minutes drive east of Ribérac. Besides the commercial and recreational facilities (hypermarkets, theatre, cinemas, golf and indoor bowling), it has a beautifully restored historic centre, Roman archaeological sites and a museum of prehistory. The Dordogne valley, the prehistoric caves of Les Eyzies and the dramatic landscapes further east around Rocamadour and Pasirac are all within a day's drive.

Bergerac, the old inland wine port on the river Dordogne is less than one hour's drive south of Ribérac. Bergerac has a very colourful, traditional market set in the heart of the old town. Note: In early 2013 'Kabarole was evaluated by the Committee of Tourism for the Department of the Dordogne and was officially awarded a 'Three Star' classification for its accommodation and facilities.

We arrived in bad weather & we left in not too good weather, but in between the sun shone and it even reached 28 degrees. Lovely time had by all, its a beautiful location & lots to do in the surrounding area. Thank you for letting us use your lovely property.

A wonderful return visit to this beautiful house

We first came 4 years ago and loved everything about this property, so we came back for exactly the same two weeks - coinciding with the local village fete - 4 days of celebrations and activities from fireworks to brocante, crepes to bumper cars, something for everyone as our party spanned three generations from 7 to 80.

The house and grounds are superb, lovely spacious rooms with a fantastic verandah linking everything together and a wonderful place to enjoy al fresco dining whatever the weather. The pool is stunning and a very peaceful spot to while away the hours.

The nearby lake at Jemaye is a great spot for a change of scene, a sandy beach with cordoned off swimming area, water sports and a couple of cafes and bistro plus lots of shade and waterside walks.

We ate fantastically at Le Donzac in the neighbouring village of St Sulpice de Roumagnac, a simple but very French restaurant, and for a more elegant meal try Hostellerie Les Griffons at Bourdeilles (on the way to Brantome). The local village restaurant Le Lavoir is also worth a try and a particularly lovely place to sit. The owner at Le Lavoir is most kind and helpful, sorting our breakfast orders for the fortnight and generally just looking after us whenever we visited.

Our hosts, Judith and Nigel, could not have been more helpful in making our stay comfortable. Nothing seemed too much trouble and they really helped make our holiday relaxing.

RECUPERATING GET AWAY

My husband and I needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and we chose 'Kabarole' in the south of france as the perfect destination. We were indeed refeshed when we finally left. Accomodation is excellent, clean and well maintained and the surroundings are magnificent. We went out for long walks and the peace and quiet is exactly what we needed.

The hosts were very pleasant and made our stay so pleasurable we decided we would visit kabarole on a yearly basis.

I have in turn recommended it to all my friends.

La Meynardie

We spent a week at the property in August 2007. It was idyllic. Judith and Nigel were extremely warm and welcoming and an invaluable source of local information. The house was spaceous, spotless and extremely comfortable with all the amenities we needed. The kitchen was very well equipped and user friendly wihch meant that cooking, far from being a necessary chore, became an enjoyable and integral part of the holiday, especially with the abundance of local produce. The markets in the area are wonderful, not just for food but for a whole range of local arts and crafts. We visitied the small restaurant in the picturesque village a couple of times during the week. The food was excellent and the atmosphere friendly and understated. It is well worth a visit and the short walk back is ideal for clearing the head after several bottles of wine to accompany the meal.

There is plently to do and see in the local area, especially for families. Canoeing, horse-riding and visting local vinyards being among the activities available. The children, more often than not, were happy to spend the day by the pool or exploring the local area with the help of Max, Judith and Nigel's friendly dog who was as good as any tour guide of the village.

I would recommend this property to anyone, families in particular. We had such an enjoyable week last year that we are returning this summer.

  • Broadband wireless internet access is provided in the living area. The car parking, veranda, living area, main bedroom and bathroom are all on one level and suitable for wheel chair access. The other ground floor bedroom has one step down. The swimming pool is not easily accessed by wheelchair nor those who are infirm. Pets that will not disturb farm animals are welcome, but expected to stay outside the house (kennel can be provided). Smoking is allowed on the veranda, but not in the house.
