About the property

Sleeps 4 in a charming rural property near Mont St Michel

Charmingly restored, 'The Little Retreat' nestles in the idyllic Brittany countryside close to the Normandy border and the breath-taking Mont St Michel. Perfect for families or couples, the cottage is just far enough from the madding crowd yet ideally located for the sandy beaches and the spectacular coastline.

The cottage sleeps four people, in one double room and one open-plan twin room, and is fully equipped for your comfort.

There are many activities nearby, to keep both adults and kids very happy. And we can provide discounted travel fares on Brittany Ferries for our guests.

Enough from us for the moment. Here are some comments from our previous guests:

“An absolute delight. From the first moment through the door to the last evening by the fire, we have had a wonderful time.” Mr & Mrs Jacob, Manchester

“It is a lovely cottage in a really beautiful setting, and we had a great time….very relaxing.” R. Sawyer, London

“Beautiful cottage, very homely. A very enjoyable relaxing holiday.” Mr & Mrs Byfield, Southampton

“A wonderful week in a lovely cottage.” Mr & Mrs Hannant, London

“Lovely property, lovely countryside, lovely peace and quiet.” Sweeney family, Herts

Now some more from us:

La Petite Retraite has been charmingly restored and features many of its original features such as the huge Breton fireplace.

It has all the comforts of home, including a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with bath and shower, and separate WC. The living room has a DVD/VCR player, and satellite TV which receives English freeview channels. The cottage is stocked with games, books and videos for all ages.

Outside, there is a fully enclosed garden at the front, where children can play safely. It's a charming place to watch the sun go down accompanied by a chilled glass of vin blanc. And to the rear, there's a sunny decking area with a barbecue and wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.

The nearest village is a mile away, where you'll find boulangeries, bars and a post-office, while just 4 miles away there's a larger town with supermarkets. La Petite Retraite is convenient for the major ferry ports of Cherbourg, Caen and St Malo, and close to regional airports at Dinard and Rennes which are served by low-cost airlines.

About Mr Simon Torkington

We're an English family who fell in love with Brittany many years ago and bought our little cottage on the spur of the moment! It was a great decision - we've had some great holidays here, and our daughter loves it. We hope you do too!

Mr Simon Torkington purchased this cottage in 2003

Dark, cool, very old stone cottage

  • 2 of 5

The first thing we did on arrival was to spend 2 hours cleaning the cottage - the floors upstairs were so dusty - under the beds, along the skirting boards, in the drawers, all over the wicker bedside tables, and books at the top of the stairs all coated with dust and cobwebs everywhere....while my 9 year old cleaned the bathroom, and we opened all the windows. It smelled very musty - not good for my asthmatic daughter. We also had to move the air fresheners outside during our stay as they were over powering and gave us sore throats.

However, once that was done, we really appreciated the cool interior as there was a heatwave outside. Downstairs was full of character with an over-sized fireplace (which would definitely be needed in cool weather) and a well equipped kitchen (not 'new' as advertised though). Wooden stairs led up to a pleasant upper floor with twin beds, dormer windows and a sweet double room off to one side with a pretty low window and Juliet balcony. This provided the only view from the cottage, but we enjoyed sleeping with the windows open.

Overall the cottage has everything you would want as a base if you are doing lots of trips out. We found the dark interior and lack of view (apart from the low bedroom window) rather oppressive after a while. The hedge in front of the cottage obscures any view downstairs. It is fine for able bodied adults and older children, but in my opinion would not be suitable for toddlers or older people due to the hard wooden stairs and stone floor and fireplace. It has bags of character and is in a very quiet location (apart from the friendly dog next door who barks and runs around at night). A wonderful place for bird spotting - we heard barn owls outside and there are many birds of prey around - and a great location for cycling. Still quite a way from Le Mont Saint-Michel and the Baie and the beaches north of Avranches. A car is definitely required. The cottage lies near the border of Normandy and Brittany - the area seemed to us to be more typical of Normandy than Brittany, with its pretty brown spotted Normand cows and small fields and orchards,

Owner's Response: We were very sorry to hear you didn't find the cottage as clean as you should have, and we are at a complete loss to explain it. Our caretakers are excellent, they always vacuum, dust, wash and mop the property before every guest. It is understandable you are concerned about dust given your daughter's asthma but we would like to assure you and future guests we have never had any complaints before, and we will redouble our efforts to make sure it stays that way. In response to your comments about toddlers, we do have stair-gates to keep small children off the steps, and a lovely enclosed lawn where they can safely play. In the meantime, thank you for your positive comments about our cottage, we're glad you had a good holiday and enjoyed the beautiful countryside. The owls are favourites of ours, too!

Excellent comfortable self-catering accommodation in quiet location.

  • 4 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying for four nights in this quaint little terraced renovated farm building. It had all we needed including the BBC TV service for us to keep up to date with the news after a day out! The bedrooms were comfortable and the bathroom had plenty of hot water for showers. The property was clean and tidy and a lovely bottle of wine was there for our arrival.

The most intriguing part of the downstairs lounge was a fireplace with a wood burning stove. The fireplace quite upstaged the rest of the cottage in that it was enormous and must have been brought in from another property.

The very friendly dog next door greeted us on arrival and every day when we returned to the property. He was in desperate need of some attention and a good brush!

Our only suggestion is that the back garden might be given a little more attention in order to make it a pleasant area to enjoy outside when the weather is fine. Maye this is a work in progress?

Our four days went by in a flash and we were able to visit Le Mont St. Michel, Dinan, Fougeres and St. Malo all interesting places to see and experience. Further afield were Bayeux and the Normandy beaches.

All in all this was a most enjoyable stay and we would have no hesitation in recommending this property to other travellers.

Owner's Response: We are thrilled you enjoyed your stay, thank you for your feedback. You're quite right about the fireplace, our best guess is that at some point in the distant past, an enterprising local removed it from a grand house or chateau and rehomed it! Thanks again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back again soon. Shiulie & Simon

Cottage was adequate but COLD

  • 2 of 5

Pretty location but at least 45 minutes drive to anywhere.

No access to wood store so had to buy wood each day - surprisingly expensive - as only other form of heat was two tiny, inadequate electric heaters and it was COLD. Staying with 5 month old baby so this was a huge issue for us.

Not especially welcoming and no bed was made up for 3rd adult; managed to contact care taker who delivered some bed linen at 11 pm.

Neighbour's dog friendly but established a mutual dislike to our dog!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, it's always good to get feedback so we can make improvements. First of all, let me apologize for the lack of the third bed. Our caretaker misread the booking instructions and thought your 5 month old was the third person. This is a regrettable error and we will make sure we are clearer with our instructions in future. We're sorry you feel you didn't have enough firewood - as we make clear in our property information, we leave enough for one or two nights to get our guests started, then they can buy their own. We have 3 electric heaters in the cottage which we have found more than enough in the past for such a small property, but we will certainly review that following your comments. You are right that the cottage is in a rural position. Many people enjoy that, and you can still get to places like Mont St Michel and Avranches in half an hour. The nearest town is less than a ten minute drive away. Finally, the dog next door is a fairly recent addition to our neighbour's household. This is out of our control. Luckily Jacques is a soppy old thing and very friendly, but we will make it clear to guests who bring their own dogs in future that there is already a dog on site.

Everything you need in a gite

  • 4 of 5

A compact gite with everything you need for a short break or holiday. Make sure you have extra supplies of wood if using the woodburner as although some is supplied the cottage is cold in winter due to be being built of stone. Electric heaters are also supplied. The cottage was rather dark downstairs but lovely and light upstairs. If you don't like dogs be aware as the adjoining property has a large dog although friendly. As usual in France they live out and do scent near the property. The garden would benefit from a good tidy and the hedge needs cutting. Also pots and windowboxes emptied of weeds. The drive is shared with the property next door and you do have to use the electronic gates to enter and exit the property. This can be a bit tiresome if you are going in and out several times a day as you have to get out of the car to punch the code in. We were unfortunate as the weather was against us and we had wet coats and boots to deal with. We were not on a sight seeing holiday but looking for a holiday home.

Owner's Response: Dear Sandra, Thank you for the four stars in your review. We're happy to hear you feel our cottage has everything the traveller needs. We were disappointed to hear the garden had not been tidied before your visit. We employ an English family who live locally to look after the house and garden. The hedge grows quite slowly and gets its annual haircut in June, so you saw it at its most unruly point of the year. We'll look into having it done twice a year from now on. The lawn is also mown regularly from June to the end of September when most of our guests visit. The electronic gate was installed to make sure little ones and pets can't wander off into the road. The house did have a traditional farm gate which was quite heavy and difficult to open for some people. We went for the electronic option to make sure nobody would have to wrestle with a big five bar gate. Punching in the code is so much easier. As for Jacques, the neighbours dog, he is a lovely old thing. We have never encountered any dog mess on the property and none of our previous visitors have either. However we will speak with the neighbours to try to come to an arrangement where he is confined to the rear of the property which is not shared with our driveway or any other part of our property. Many thanks for your comments. We always like to hear the positives and we always make every effort to respond to any concerns. We want all of our guests to enjoy our little patch of France as much as we do. Best wishes, Simon and Shiulie.

Cosy Winter Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at the pretty little cottage. We spent our time getting around the area, and enjoyed exploring Mt Saint Michel and St Malo, and even got across to Jersey!

We spent our evenings in front of the wonderful wood burning stove with a glass of french red wine. A lovely break - thank you!

Cosy French retreat

  • 5 of 5

This is a fabulous cosy cottage nestled in the beautiful French countryside - which we've enjoyed on numerous occasions. We've always had the most relaxing break away from the stress of every day life, enojying cosy evenings eating fine food bought locally from the nearby town of St James, and then settling down to a roaring log fire in the beautiful Bretton fireplace- a fantastic feature of the cottage. The cottage is idealy located for visiting the walled town of St. Malo, enojying the clean beaches and of course, Mont St Micheal - a UNESCO world heritage site, which is particulalry stunning at sunset. The new kitchen and bathroom look like a excellent addition to an already fabulous cottage and we hope to return soon to try them out!!
